My friends were in Dominican Republic last year but they were in some tourist complex and never really left beyond that. They told them they can't guarantee their safety outside. They brought home sand from the beach there, hot damn that sand is so damn smooth.

I been to DR BUNCH of times... atleast in resort areas it was perfectly safe and beautiful.... cities? hmmm I wouldn'....

You're gonna have a lot of fun Garus, that's guaranteed  . Them Latinas will make your hips shake 
I've been to DR too (Punta Cana and Isla Saona, in one of those typical resorts for families), and it was awesome..but it was back in the 90s so as you can imagine my priorities were different xD
Just follow Lopin's advices, apply common sense, avoid going around naked at 3:00am and everything will be alright. If you stick to the touristic areas, it should be pretty safe...on paper!
