for all i care, its a great trend, that way these younger casual derps will buy less games and hence the industry will be moving away from derp slowly and back to catering to real gamers, ie. the twitch streamers instead of the watchers.

maybe its just wishful thinking.

Or they might just drop throwing lots of money into the production of games and focus even more on cheap fp2 games instead.

I'm guilty of watching two let's plays and they were both awesome:

The Longest Journey - I've played it but a long time ago. I've found a let's play from a girl with a nice voice and it sucked me in. It was so awesome to experience that beautiful adventure, while listening to some small and funny comments. Sometimes it felt like I was kind of connecting with this unknown person.

The last of us - no commentary but wow was it amazing. I bought a ps3 for TLOU specifically but some turd's sold be a fixed YLOD and it didn't take long until it fucked up again. So I figured fuck it, I'll watch it on youtube. It was freaking amazing. I never thought that it can be so addictive - watching a game on youtube. But that's probably because TLOU has an awesome atmosphere.

All and all I kind of understand why people watch let's plays. You feel disconnected and alone while playing a game yourself. It's quite different (for SOME people, not me) while watching let's plays.

Interesting observation. I'll come back to this once I've got a bit of time.

Forget it, sorry. I was going to write something about externalization of work in comparison to capitalism and the tale of Ulysses and the Sirens, but I guess that would have been a little far fetched... Rolling Eyes

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I have literally zero experience with this trend (the fact that I'm either surrounded by people older than me or by a crew of Facebook addicts or..both doesn't help really xD), but if by any chance my future hypothetical child will start wasting precious time on these twitchs 'n twatchs, pewpiedie's and the likes instead of playing real games instead, well I will have to take the adequate countermeasures.

No internet at all for one month, and hardcore single-player-only RPG marathon until all the toxic stimuli are wiped away Cool Face Laughing

That's me. I've finished thousands upon thousands of games but last few years I am more often just watching giantbomb and YOutube. When I start a game, it's usually fine but Its not too often.

I more often am playing the games like binding of isaac or spelunky tho

My gaming days started on Sinclair. Commodore, Atari and Amiga followed next. And I love Let's Play videos. Nowadays it's 60% watching "let's play" and 40% playing games by myself Very Happy

Mostly watch turn based strategy games and verbally comment "No, don't end your turn just yet. You have forgotten to do this and that." Laughing
Even watch LPs of strategy games I haven't played yet to see should I invest time in them or not. Early episodes are always overview of the games and don't spoil anything. Discovered a lot of new games this way Smile

But I am quite picky. For me, LPs must be narrated and narrator should have pleasant voice and intonation Very Happy

Yup, it's a little disgusting to me too. I don't consider these people gamers though... well, that actually goes for the majority of people who play games nowadays..

The only explanation I have for this is that it's their substitute for watching TV. Can't really blame them, I stopped watching TV year ago myself.
