La belle et la bête (2014)

7/10

Stunningly beautiful fairy tale, Léa Seydoux is gorgeous and all but something is missing and I can't quite put my finger on it. Most likely it has something to do with writing, I dunno.

Was going to give it 8,5 halfway through but then I saw that the "chapters" will actually be dragged longer than necessary.
Other than that, pretty solid movie. Goes to the "12 years a slave" category.

Pretty high score for a in my eyes very mediocre movie. Also nowhere near the "12 years a slave" category.

5/10

What We Do In The Shadows 8/10

A pleasant surprise, original and hilarious at times. The humor dries out somewhat halfway, but it still has funny moments in the second part.
One can only wish True Blood went in this direction.

If so, I'd appreciate any feedback on what you've seen. If you have any movies to recommend, don't hesitate. (Also, don't recommend movies with more than 25k votes, even that is way too many, seeing as I might've heard of 'em)

I'm looking forward to The Theory of Everything, no doubt it will be good. Eventho it's just a higher budget remake of Hawking (2004). What I've seen so far in the promotion material is that they go for the same tone and nuances that were in that one (not that one can change drasticly when it's a biografi).

Loved Calvary, has some great humor, Great performance from the actors, especially Gleeson doing another good job. Rather dark and serious, but it's a great movie if you want a break from Hollywood.

Under the skin, didn't like it. They want to be artsy fartsy, which results in scenes and moments being too drawn out. Quite bad that pacing is a problem in a film that is only 108 minutes long. The good part: you get some naked time with Johansson. I really didn't care for this movie.

I have seen The Intruder and Quadraphonia, but I think that is more than a decade ago, so I can't really recall much from it. Other than, I vaguely remember liking Quadraphonia... which is not much of a help.

My friends usually whined on me to watch Dardenne movies, but I was never a fan of what they produced. But I don't think you can go horribly wrong with them, seeing how much they praise them every time they release a movie.

Thanks for the insight. I have a lot of friends who recommended Under the Skin which is the only reason it's there, however I'm not expecting much since I'm not a huge fan of Scarlett's acting, but I'm hoping for a strong story.

@h0rny
Thanks ! I update it quite often with mostly movies that aren't that well-known so if you're a cinephile in need for movies to watch, you should check it out once in a while. I did see your rating of the movie, I sometimes get some of the recommendations from here.
Also, whenever you watch any of the movies from that list, let me know.

I've only seen Under the Skin, and I thought it was a piece of pretentious crap. Very Happy

Never liked the Dardenne movies either. The ones I've seen are all pretty depressing, so I've never felt like watching another one of them.

~7/10.

I liked the cinematography, overall mood, and coming of age metaphors , however,I expected more from this film + I was kinda disappointed they didn't show a full metamorphosis.

A Walk Among the Tombstones - 7/10

I was prepared for a disaster, or at least something cheesy, but it turned out to be a decent movie. Definitely more thriller than action, slow-paced, with a quite conventional plot, and good ol' Liam doing what he does best. Some parts felt a bit amateurish at times, but it never took the fuckyea action hero route and stayed somewhat believable till the end. Not bad. Razz

John Wick (2014)

7/10

I liked

- motivation
- cinematography
- music
- fights
- some great non-fighting scenes

I didn't like

- nonsensical even for a pure action film script (after the dog died, as I said motivation is fine)
- his "guardian angel" interfering and saving the day at least twice
- most dialogues
- fights as in he used close pistol executions too often. It was almost always like this: he starts fighting using martial art tricks and then executes his enemies with a pistol. It looks good and all but when it is done gain and again and again and again, it gets repetitive really quickly.

- English hardcoded subtitles for Russian dialogues. OMG. It was beyond bad. Quite often what was written in English meant something entirely different from what was said in Russian.

For instance, the boss's son said "Fuck you!", however, they "translated it" as " It was just a fucking.." (dog).. lol wut? Very Happy

John Wick - I came / 10..... ( 9 / 10 )

exactly my type of movie.

I'd have done the ending a bit different and maybe would've done some amazing torture to "the reek", but whatever.

Great movie, I fucking love Keanu Reeves.

Inherent Vice - 3/10 - Confusing, Complicated, Boring 2.5 hour movie. I really did not understand half of it. Too many characters, mumbling. It had a few funny moments and some hot chicks but thats it. Not Recommended.

Cake - 7/10 - Jen Anniston really can act! Sad movie about suicide. Great acting, good story, and yes can be understood and watched.

The Gambler - 5/10 - Not one of Mark's better movies. Seemed very slow and boring. No real substance. Cant recommend.

Bird Man - 7.5/10 - Liked this one! Maybe because it took place in NYC. Gave off a good feel of broadway show production. Keaton was great actor! Recommended!

Much better than The Equalizer (2014) , but still nothing special just a shallow copy of Eastern Promises (2007). Trailer had already shown the best parts from the movie.

Better skip this one and watch "Eastern Promises". Or even better - watch / re-watch "A History of Violence (2005)" Smile

Fury. The fuck was that? Teen Tank drama with lots of blood? Muddy Star Wars 1945? Worse than expected (maybe 5-6ish??) / 10. Honestly thought I'd see some quality war drama like band of brothers or private ryan.

Non-Stop 8.5/10

That was bloody brilliant, had a blast with that trying to figure out who was in charge and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I was a bit annoyed around the middle when Neeson was acting like a crazy loon, it was just so unrealistic and irritating, but after that it settled down and ended great. Damned good.

The Equaliser 9/10

Now that's what I'm fucking talking about! That was outstanding, I was expecting something good and I got something great! \o/

A few good stories here and there but too much tasteless crap.

The ABC'S of Death 2 - 6/10

More even selection of stories here, enjoyed it more than the first one.

john wick 7/10

all in all, an entertaining movie... had a nice solid pace with some great action choreography that is often lacking in most modern action films these days. I mean really, it was beautifully done, well shot, fast/fluid and full of really creative movements rather than just the bog standard usual shit we see - AND NOT A SINGLE FUCKING LAZY ASS SLOW-MOTION SEQUENCE TO OFFEND THE EYE So Much Win. john is totally an artiste Very Happy

my only real complaint with the film, is that its not very grounded in reality... by that i mean everything feels so inconsistent. oh look, the guy is masterful and has epic situational awareness... oh look, now he gets blindsided 'because story'. watch as he slaughters dozens of people, but lo does he decided to spare the people he most SHOULDN'T 'because story'. he knows theres a bounty out on him, walks around in the open, completely oblivious to assassins watching him...

and dont even get me started on that chick...

so yeah, an inconsistent "stuff happens just 'cause" kinda movie, but what can i say. I LIKE keanu, hes fun, and this movie has well made action sequences and a pretty tight pace that i rate it better than most recent action films ive seen for remembering that action films are not just about 'having action' in them, but about showcasing it.
