IF you're a car guy, being in sales of cars is the worst job you could have picked to do with cars.

Your taking the job of being the lowest man on the pole to deal with people that are spending a huge chunk of money, on something they will need everyday for the next 5+ years. And top it off its not a toyota or honda, they are spoiling themselves by getting a expensive car so:
They expect to be treated like royalty. They know that there is 1001 places that are desperate to sell their stock of cars to them and what makes or breaks the deal if how good a deal they get, and how much you pander to them to make it point to remind them, as much as possible, that you feel lucky and privileged they even considered your car lot for their luxury purchase. So if they can get ass kissing there, and a good deal elsewhere..they will do that.

Not trying to be a pessimist about it. its human nature unfortunately. free info and ass kissing when making a $50k+ purchase is assumed to be part of the 'experience' they expect.
But you should really change jobs if cars is your passion. Because your job is pandering to the customers like they are kings first and foremost, and cars just happen to be the catalyst you use to do it. Not the focus and passion of the job itself. Your boss or customer doesn't care how much you love cars, just how good you are at selling them.
Its not different than someone that goes "Art is my passion" and takes a job trying to sell painting to snobs in a commision art gallery. Thier job is to kiss ass, make money, and push paintings. Not loving the art on the wall Smile

One time I had a guy calling me a month later saying "hey, I can do that price now"... to bad I already had another car.

funny thing.
i went to the oficial dealer site, it had a shop, you enter what you want, and it gave the final price.
so we went to a local oficial salesman, ask him for a price and he gave us the same price we got on the oficial site. we ask for a better deal, he said that was the best price he can gave us. really ? we already got that price beign an anonymous person on web.
so we went to the place on which we had the test drive, and we talked with a salesman there (same one which help us with the test drive) and he got us a 10% price cut.

lmfao I'm not going to buy a car a thousand euros more just because you spoke with me for half an hour about the different versions and extras.

You sure have a high idea about your field of knowledge. Laughing

Seems you are quite naive how humans are. While you might not fall for it, there are a whole heap of other people on this globe that might. Wink

Then again, if it's the same price or just a few dozen euros difference, then I'll buy it from a guy I actually spoke to.

If you wouldn't do it, doesn't mean you're alone on the world.

How do you think Apple sells their devices, when there's Android based devices that demolishes their devices for half the price?
A budget GPU and a high end one basically do the same thing, right? But if you can afford the high-end one, you'd buy it, why?

By the time 99% of people get to the apple store, they don't need someone to talk them into buying it, they knew they was going to buy it, at that store, before they walked in.

Totally different setting, its rigidly priced items of the same type sold in the same stores in the same way.
Compared to the same car, sold at different prices, with different convincing techniques to show they should get it from you, giving 110% to find out 1/4 of them go elsewhere anyway. It comes with the job.

Think about it like you're an apple store employee and haggling is an option and the whole decided before they came in wasn't there... After you spent 45 minutes explaining which iPad best suits them, You don't think some people would go to another store that offers a lower price for the same item once they found out.

Basically a car dealers haggle is a totally different setting. You're seen as the man standing between them and they car they want. You're the guy 'in the way' they have to battle with to see who comes out on top, them, or your dealership on the agreement.
Its your job to convince them you're on their side and you're not there to gouge them. By kissing their ass, and will work to get them the best price possible.
Why you think car dealers get such a bad reputation..it boils down to "Lets go look at cars, and see who we can find that wants to screw us the least". Since prices are variable and on the whim of the dealership on how bad they want to sell it.
Apple products dont have any of that stigma or variables.

Id buy it because it runs my games better, not because it more luxurious. if they had a $40 card that did the same results and FPS in all my games as a $400 card..I'm getting the $40. I wouldn't toss an extra $360 at a high-end one for no gain. And again, if newegg had it cheaper, I dont care how much tigerdirect talked to me about buy theirs for $50..

In all fairness, this topic wouldn't even have come up if there was no commission involved.

As someone who has worked in CS and sales for over 20 years, I can tell you that in that short time, the world has changed and it is the Internet to blame.

However, bosses of bosses can't entirely understand this, as they still expect stores/showrooms to sell X amount of Y, making Z% profit, and it MUST be the salesman's fault for not being good enough.

Customers have changed. The older generation are much more likely to buy on the word of a friendly salesman than anyone under the age of 45, because they never needed to really worry about the internet as a shop front.

On the flip side, not everything on Amazon is cheapest.

I feel sorry for any salesman who enjoys the interaction with customers, only to be told they are a failure because they didn't 'close the sale'.
