That you can have internet over your electrical lines O.o

How did I know know about this before? I mean I don't need it, but this is really awesome!

Have I been asleep these last few years or?

Yeah, it's been accessible for some time, first time I heard about it was more than 10 years ago

This goes really well with tech that allows listening or recording audio in your home using everything that's plugged. Available for a couple of decades too, yes.

Yup, I use it. Only a couple of minor issues:

a) Speeds quoted are never attainable, it is very much dependant on the quality of the wiring.
b) Other electrical devices can occasionally knock you offline, as they introduce too much noise when switching on (tumble dryers, microwaves, water heaters). Ideally have a wifi connection as a backup.

But other than that, very awesome, and more reliable than wireless.

What about surges? What happens if there is a power surge? Won't that risk the modem/router/motherboard?

They usually have surge protectors.
I have installed them at clients, but usually that is reserved for the customers that don't want drilling/laying cables or overpriced wi-fi solutions (but nowadays that's less of an issue).

The tech is around for quite a while and its indeed all about the wiring for the speeds you get. But back then that's what some clients opted for a cheap and stable solution.

I see it as a good use for a quick fix lan option in your house if you don't have the connections in the room.

Ive had one for about 2 years for my wifes PC since the wifi was crap at that end of the house.
The speed isnt near what cat6 direct would be, but it beats 2 bar wifi speeds hands down.

It's 'supported' here as well as far as I know (even though nobody is aware of it), but as you can imagine both the actual quality and speeds are abysmal due to our 30 year old ghetto jumpy wirings. Even the standard one is terrible, so it was to be expected Razz

I hear though that it's not very good in the cities either. I guess this option is something that the company that monopolizes everything doesn't quite like xD

Yep it works pretty well.

The coax version can also work wonders in some situations.

yeah for whatever reason my wife doesn't want a 50ft blue cat5 cable running across the house so year powerline is a lifesaver Smile

I have to scale down netflix/hulu to under 1mbps on wifi in the living room (router/internet upstairs) but HD works fine over powerline.

Today I learned of the Bielefeld number which is defined as Bi^2=-1

I guess it's fitting to name it after a non-existant city Very Happy

Powerlan sucks, always sucked and will always suck! especially in older houses. for undemanding users it is a convenient solution, but otherwise its always smarter to use cable (even if you need to make some holes in the wall or sth else) or use range extenders / more than one access point to increase wifi range

i installed some, but they sucks balls.
even the most expensive and reliable one fuckt up at least weekly, is great when i get a call that db server is on dope again. from 15 installations during times, 12 now are on wifi. at 10% of equipment cost.
if you are building a new office/house/whatever, just wire the usual eth in walls, dont relly on this piece of shit tehnology (at this time). does not work ok even with perfect and new installed wires.
