The two chips are good at they're own thing, it all depends on what you bentchmark them at. I've said it before..
AMD wins at FPS, and one time calculations.
Intel wins at multithreaded calulations and media encoding/decoding.

Ok here is what I would recommend.
Put just a little more cash into it and get a X2 3800+ (thats an AMD CPU yes, dual core ), also I would recommend getting something better then a 6600. It is waste of money to pay for one now and then pay agian to upgrade it later on. Get atleast a 6800GT or even better a 7800GT. Like your config with the 7800GTX, change the GTX for a GT and you can get a better CPU.
I would also consider getting 2gb of ram if I were you. It really makes a difference. Atleast it did for me.
You people should really read into some NEW CPU benchmarks instead of talking old Athlon XP vs P4 NW tests...
The AMD 64 is the king of the hill for the time being, like it or not. Cheaper, more performance for money, the nForce 4 chipset is kickass, the integrated memory controller is the best thing ever and getting a dual core A64 is cheaper then getting a top-range P4.
Amd all the way is my advice.
Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!

Then you woke up and realized Pentium is an overpriced crap, AMD out-performs Pentiums in every aspects, not onyl that they are cheaper.
There are lots of websites with benchmarks and AMD leaves Pentium in the dust, face the facts child.

According to benchmarks on lets say - tomshardware
where it shows the latest P4s including the p4 EE 3.73 and almost the latest AMDs(doesnt include the new san diego) but it does include the clawhammer fx-55
As expected Intel wins most benchmarks, at leat 15 by a whopping defeat
while Amd doesnt even reach 10 by overall wins, not just the noticeable ones
I guess you calculated price and power consumption into your comparisons
or was it your ass that did the talking for you?

toms hardware isnt the most reliable place to read benchmarks , some of there testing methods are completely fucked. ask on any computer hardware forum like xs and the general feeling is tomshardware are crap.
like kosmiq said get a dual; core amd 64. but dont waste your money on a x2 3800 get a opteron 165 or better they all come with 2mb cache compared to the x2 3800 1mb and its cheaper then the 3800 , just cant lower the multi
