I guess this is the best place to put it:

Dear RapidShare Customers

Kindly note that RapidShare will stop the active service on March 31st, 2015. Extensions of STANDARD PLUS and PREMIUM will be possible until February 28th, 2015.

We strongly recommend all customers to secure their data. After March 31st, 2015 all accounts will no longer be accessible and will be deleted automatically.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail to support@rapidshare.com

Thank you for many years of trust.

It was a good service, didn't use them in recent years anymore tho.

I guess they kinda died off, when torrents and streaming services got more popular.

Biggest noobs I know that used Whatevershare now use torrents.

nope they lost most of the customers to other filesharing platforms like uploaded.
they implemented a new upload/bonus system back then and blocked mostly all of the "free" users by slowing down the free download speed to 10kb/s or whatever.
no free users = less downloads = less bonus for uploaders = uploaders move to other filehosters.

also torrents became popular after rs died?
as a beginner back in the day i used edonkey/emule, then torrent, (some months usenet), xdcc and since 2009 och.
how is using a system like torrents where everyone can see your ip and stuff in any way smart?
even if u use private trackers... and then u even have to upload shit to others so u can be on of the "chosen" ones on the trackers. fuck this shit.

/edit
oh forgot! the correct order: edonkey/emule, torrent, (some months usenet), xdcc, filehosters

Names/companies change and they get replaced, but there are still great free file hosting sites around for buccaneers even if it sounds kinda anachronistic. It requires some patience (and luck) but sites like MEGA or zippyshare for example are pretty darn good.

Truth to be told, me still likey the public torrents as well grinhurt (mostly because my speeds are so low that there isn't much difference between those and the private ones anyway *cries in a corner*)

I was using a Multi-OCH, which included most of the popular hosters. But a few weeks ago Uploaded and Share-Online stopped the accounts of many of those MOCHs. And at least for german things you find uploads mostly on these two hosters.
Well, the MOCH i currently still have a sub also provides Usenet access. So i started using Usenet and also public torrent trackers for new popular stuff like series grinhurt
