MONSTER POST!
I went to the Helsinki International Film Festival during the fall and saw a shitload of films.
I kind of forgot to write reviews of them and then forgot to post it anywhere.
So... here's my short reviews of films I saw; (bit.ly links are youtube trailers, to prevent embedding)
Quiet Roar - (Norway) - http://hiff.fi/en/elokuvat/the-quiet-roar-2/
A woman at the end of her life reflects on a past event in her life through medically induced flashbacks.
It's a really interesting premise that I think is wasted on a not-really-that-interesting relationship drama.

Metalhead - (Iceland) - http://hiff.fi/en/elokuvat/metalhead-2/
Death of a brother drives a girl to be obsessed with metal music.
It's a film about grief, guilt and being an outcast in a small town - who we are and what we want to be in life.
There's some humor but it's very dry and mostly from absurdity of situations.
And also Metal. \m/
The film features one of the best deconstructions of a complex topic I've seen.
A band starts playing a pretty extreme metal song to a noob audience, who simply do not understand.
They then stop, and restart the song with a clean melody, clean singing voice, and slowly introduce the heavier elements through the song, as if teaching the audience.

A murder and an affair are told in flashbacks in police interrogation.
It's not a bad story but is hurt by the convoluted way it's told.

The film is a weird experiment.
Every person in the film is in a constant state of anxiety.
Periodically helicopters fly overhead, announcing evictions.
Everyone tries to get on with their lives with the overwhelming melancholy and oppressing atmosphere.
It felt like the world was about to end in a week and everyone had agreed not to acknowledge it but they were already dead inside.
The constant unease worked really well for the first half of the film but the later half kind of fell apart as it did not build to anything.
It just got silly and then it ended.

The film focuses on a girl who lived her entire life in a convent and is taking a trip outside to look for her family.
But it's more about finding herself and what the world outside is all about.
It's like a noir-film where the bad guy is life in general.
Every person seems to wander through their lives aimlessly.
It's a really beautifully shot slow meditation on meaning and what we tell ourselves to find one.

Two sisters meeting at their childhood home, reliving the trauma of youth with their boyfriends.
Common but not uninteresting story that is distracted by secondary characters.

A true story about a family and a local gangster that is terrorizing their lives.
The police doesn't do anything and the father finally decides to take matters to his own hands and decides to kill him.
I really liked the acting and muted portrayal of the surroundings.
It all felt very real - people were ugly and places were dirty - nothing is hollywood-airbrushed.

Ambulance drivers start betting on patient survival rate.
A fun drama comedy that plays it a bit too safe to be interesting.

Rural life of common people, freedoms and traditions corroded by oppressive foreign religious regime.
A depressing down to earth portrayal of reality.
Nice to see issues discussed without painting people as demons.
Maybe a bit too down to earth, making it interesting mostly by being so very different from most films I would normally see.

Film about the inner life of a blind person.
Her increasing isolation from society, loneliness, fears, fantasies.
Did a really good job at getting into the mindset and perception of events from a blind perspective.

Rural life probably somewhere in eastern Siberia, near a nuclear weapons test site.
Though I think the "test" of the title refers more to the type of film this is - The film has zero dialogue.
It's a simple narrative that can be told with careful use of visuals and acting.
Really beautiful cinematography and soundscapes, as one would expect from a film that abandons speech.
An interesting experience but fell short of leaving a bigger lasting impression.

My only Finnish film.
I usually avoid Finnish films since they're nearly all generic garbage, but this looked different enough to warrant a view.
It's a disjointed view of a somewhat simple boy trying to make sense of the world.
I actually can't even remember what exactly happened in the film anymore.
It's based on a book and could have perhaps used a proper rewrite or better direction or something to give it a bit more structure.
The strength of the film was the dark noir aesthetic of depressing urban 1980s Helsinki.

A silly film about ambulance drivers sell bodies to black market.
Felt like a slapstick comedy version of Gambler above, and I think inspired by the same real life story.

A teenage girl's body is going through natural changes.
Except this time she happens to be a werewolf.
A nice perspective to finding oneself and mob mentality of society fearing anything different.

A beautiful, slow and very long film.
Unfortunately I had to leave early before the end.
I would need to watch it again completely to have a proper opinion.

How have I been able to completely miss Roy Anderson so far?
The film is a very slow meditation on absurdity of our lives with comedy dry as the desert.

Also Roy Anderson.
This was a bit of a disappointment after Songs of the second floor.
It certainly had it's moments, but it lacked the structure that made the other film a surreal masterpiece.
Or maybe I just missed it.

The return of Alejandro Jodorowsky.
A loosely structured art film that jumps around surreal and absurd allegories, history and life experience.
It's a masterpiece, but an acquired taste.

I liked it. Surprisingly it's a good drama.Although it's kinda sad to see what once gorgeous Emmanuelle Béart has done to her face  She shouldn't have done plastic surgeries and stuff ..There was no need tbh

late phases
oh man... such squandered opportunity. had a more serious bubba hotep kinda feel to it...
and it started off great... i liked the characters, the initial kill was really good... didnt show too much, and set the scene really well...
and then during the movie, it kinda meandered a bit, but it was still good because i liked the main character...
and then it all kinda fell to shit near the end. some half-explored backtstory to the beast, those FUCKING UGLY costumes (seriously, its been a long time since ive seen monster outfits this bad, the were atrocious - at times it looked like people in fur suits or using rejected wookie outfits from star wars... it was almost laughable... and when you could clearly see the faces in the light, they were just as bad. the transformation scene was ok though... i liked how it was handled for the most part.
and then the finale... it just wasnt tense, i expected more sneaking around, stalking... more blood.. i wasnt expecting... well.. what i got. there was even a grapple/punch up scene with one, it was just so fucking stupid.
and can someone, for the love of fuck, explain the grave/gravestone scene. please. also who the fuck was the 4th werewolf. is that a spoiler? 4th werewolf? honestly i dont care... thats how dumb it was... but seriously, explain the 4th werewolf and the grave scene because i dont get it.
so yeah, give me the first... half of this film finished off with the same eye and skill that made it so good, and id have been happy. 7/10 for first half, 3/10 for second... and if i know maths, whch i think i do, that averages out to about 4.2758 fuck this/10

Big Hero 6 5/10
Meh!
It starts of with annoying me with this Asian culture/talk/looks being westernized (ye ye sanfrantokyo or whatever lame explanation). If you are going to have them Asian please go the full route, I'm a westerner but this feels me even more disconnected because they turn out so fricking weird.
The movie wanted to do too much and those references were just too obvious for me and well... too much. Power rangers, Megaman, Replicators, Stargate,... Yes we know... you liked the 90's, we don't have to get reminded every 5 minutes 
Also the exaggeration and stereotyping going on... fine most animated movies do that, but again: too much. If I'd saw this as a kid it would have annoyed me as well (hated overacting back then and still do... yes they are young, no they aren't morons. It's what we make them over time).
And meanwhile people claim Disney found themselves again... they sure haven't.

Street Kings - 7,5/10
I had missed this one back in the day, and I don't even know why exactly, it was definitely enjoyable despite some minor silliness. You rarely see Neo and Captain America teaming up and forming their own justice league in the streets of LA. (There is more than that of course, it's actually a cop drama with the typical Ayer style).
The press bashed it pretty badly, labeling it as misleading and overdone, I thought it was a realistic representation of everyday's police work

@ixigia It's by the same guy that did Sabotage with Arnold, but it's a much better film. He also wrote Training Day and Dark Blue. It's hist forte, corrupt cops.

well its set in america, but in an alternate version of the world where san fancisco was rebuilt with primarily japanese support, hence the 'mash up'... america but with a heavy infusion of japanese people and hence japanese influences.
you just dont like the idea of mixing of the races... tsk  japanese go home? |

Indeed! I've watched them all, only this one was left.  It's a shame that Sabotage turned out to be such a disappointing movie, it had potential..and it actually had some good too, which was wasted by retarded choices and story developments :< |

I still want to do a cut of Sabotage. The bluray has cut scenes that made Arnold the bad guy at the end (not as shown in the normal cut where he stole the money) but the murderer of all. I mean, how great would the film have been! I want to make a Leo cut of this, the original script.

When I bought my PC I was like... eh let's get a blue ray with it anyway... still haven't used it years later 
(previous one had no optical drives, damn BR tricking me back to it!) |
