One thing i actually do like is the graphics, it's very gritty and it holds up well in the original resolution (with the graphical mod that can scale it to your monitors resolution), something i actually didn't really expect. I like how consistent it looks, like the art was done by one guy.
1) Adventuring as a dot on a map is neither very exciting or immersive. This is a huge difference in the Bethesda games where much of the adventuring is in the wastes and not just in cities (like in previous FO games).
2) Gear, loot.. not very exciting and feels quite limited, especially armor, much better in Bethesda's games.
3) element of surprise - non-existant in the older games since they didn't even include a "fog of war", you always know what's around the corner. pretty boring. sure you have the random encounters where they try to make up for this but imo, the element of surprise needs to be better than this in a RPG..
4) heights, non existant as a gameplay element since it's isometric, can't swim, can't climb, can't fall down (unless scripted).. boring. i like heights, views.. well let's just say i prefer seeing (and, especially, moving around) the world in 3D.
5) Diversity. Obviously it sucks in FO1-2, it's the same sprites over and over. due to isometric style it's also never very personal (can't see people's faces, except for a few key characters).
6) Fighting. this is where it holds up really great, it's often challenging. Bethesda need to get _much_ better at this, all their games sucks when it comes to this.
As for story and dialogues, it's grittier and has something Bethesda is missing for sure (in dialogues). Story is decent too, quests are ranging from great to poor or just stupid.. There's quite a few stupid things actually, just like in FO3. I think NV is the winner when it comes to quests.
The quests can also sometimes feel really broken or down right strange because how it checks your stats and decides if this or that is going to be in the dialogue tree or not, but without really affecting the rest of the quest or what you have discovered etc. E.g i have a rather low perception and I was going to rescue some boy. I found him, found his father, found the guy to release him, but i could never complete it because something in the dialogue options was removed (probably only available with higher perception). Rather sloppy work imo..
I hope Bethesda learned a few things from Obsidian (and why not From Software ) and take it a step further (Skyrim was an improvement over Oblvion in lots of ways). I don't want the stupid skill tree from Skyrim though, absolutely horrible.. |
For me in Fallout 1 vs Fallout 2, Fallout 1 wins.
First game felt more like an adventure game with RPG elements. Game world was more coherent. Second game was an open-world RPG with the main problem it brings - world feels more static and locations are like the attractions in an amusement park.
Also the combat balance was way off in Fallout 2. It forced the player to run from random encounters and avoid almost all combat quests till they leveled to 12 - 15 level. And as quests regularly led to combat and frequently without any hint about it, player was forced to save before doing any talking. During almost all such combat quests player was outnumbered at least 5 to 1. Random encounters were even more ridiculous with 10 - 15 vs 1

Should you always have a chance to win when entering combat? Balance is overrated in single player games, for me your issue is a plus.

100% agreed. I love games where random shit happens and you sort of just have to "Deal With It". Dark Souls had that and people loved it, struggled with it, but you still love reading success stories and how "proud" some people are for beating those games or specific bosses even.

Just a rumor:
Quote: | A German gaming site is reporting a rumor that Bethesda will officially reveal Fallout 4 at the end of its E3 press conference next month. Citing a trusted, but anonymous source, German site PC Games said that the company will show off a detailed, closed-doors video of gameplay.
The site reports the demo will be between 20 and 30 minutes in length. Back in February, Bethesda announced its first ever E3 conference, setting the internet ablaze with wild speculation over the conference's purpose. |

You know, I want to be super stoked about this but I know it's going to be some fuckoff console port. Bethsoft can eat a dick if that's the route they go this time...

this is one of my most looked-forward to games. i cant wait for more wasteland... i just hope they're finally overhauling the engine so it wont look like something from the mid 90s
that said, in a way i think the fo3/nv look FEELS so fallout to me, i probably wouldnt bitch too hard if it still looked the same... the archaic look seems to work for the decaying dead world its set in

As long as it's on CREATION, or whatever they rename Gamebryo to this time around, and not Tech5.. I'll be happy. If it's Tech5, tables are getting flipped.

Hah yea, large environments sure and for a shooter game it probably rivals CryEngine 3.6.x and UE 4.7.x in terms of scope for how large a level can be but a seamless open world I don't think it has the means to handle streaming on that scale.
Short of putting something like walled guarded checkpoints or other types of loading zones such as seen with RAGE as to divide it into easier to manage chunks, or borderlands to borrow a UE3.x game.
(But as seen with Dragon Age Inquisition it can make the various areas feel somewhat disconnected, of course DA:I also has no real passing of time which further strengthens this feeling and there's a static day/night cycle too.)

If it's a closed-doors demo only, then we won't see anything out of it, just like with DooM 4. BTW, I hope Beth finally show that bloody D4 demo in public at this year's E3.

Can't be, they wouldn't be holding a conference unless they were showing off a BGS game to everyone. Doom alone isn't enough (and nobody cares about the rest of the shit they're publishing).

I hope Bethesda learns from Rockstar how to create an open world realistic/believable environment. GTA V has set for me a new standard in how an open world game should look, feel, play.
Skyrim is a complete joke of a world. Everything looks artificial to me (rocks, hills, grass, slopes etc.). Even Gothic 3 has a more interesting world in terms of geography/geology.

The next TES (and FO4.5) will presumably still be on the current gen consoles. You'll probably have to wait for TES7 and FO5 for the next-next-next gen consoles and subsequent engine upgrade.

Gothic 3 (and even Gothic 2) had indeed a more realistic world. Skyrim was usually pretty flat without many cliffs, overhangs, rock formations, etc. Oddly enough, Fallout 3 was a lot better.

Was a bit surprised by that statement as well. I get the statement about Gothics world... but I didn't think Skyrim was lacking cliffs, rock formations or overhangs... Thought it was well balanced. At least I didn't stick to paths and was climbing to places with nothing to see xD
