For now, yes. But I very much doubt we've seen the last of this. Valve will likely continue pushing it for their new games (if those ever come out, heh) and Bethesda might try it with Fallout 4 right from its release, too.

Well after the huge backlash, at the very least they might reconsider how they do it and make it a little more fair for the modder and consumer.
For now, I'm glad they didn't completely ruin Skyrim for me, by putting certain vital mods behind a pay wall. Heck, even if I was so daft to want to pay for the mods, the fact that Steamworks is horrible would put me off anyway.

people keeps going that bathsheba deserve 45%.
they dont deserve a shit.
at the best they should ask for a fixed amount to issue a mod licence for premium payed mods 50-100$), free/donate mods should not require a license. steam should keep their cut, but they need to work to get that $, not to rely on a half arsed workshop.
why developers dont deserve a permanent cut ?
because mods and mod comunity greatly enhance the life of a product.
without mods, skrym would have died (sales) after top 1 year.
mods keeps the sales going, so bathsheba already got $ even from free mods.

It does not matter if they take it back, the thought/idea is already spread over any Modding Community that exists, threads with questions like 'should we really get paid for our time doing mods' already in place. Like vurt said, the true failure of this system is the amount of possible Mods, people with a modded Skyrim with beyond 100+ Mods aren't going to pay just because it's way too much cash to spend on things that you sometimes change quickly.
To be honest, I have several modded instances of games on my external HDD, which I then rarely or never used, now there can be the same issue with people that bought Mods, it's just way out of hand.
Whoever did it knew what they would unleash, it's very clever. And if those money hungry people leave the community, FINE, more space (and donations) for those that need the exposure anyway.
'I once modded Skyrim, but then I took a dollar to the knee'

There are resources, features, systems shared with the rest of the mod community.

Everything you create with the construction kit is owned by Bethesda anyway. You'd know that if you read the EULA you have to agree to before you can download the kit. |
If you think i created my mod with the construction set you are clueless.

If the guy wants money, he shouldn't make mods.
Mods are there to show off your skills, to support the game you like, to potentially get attention from publishers or developers and to get recognition from others. That's how it always has been. Counter Strike was a massive endeavor that was completely free and took years of work.
Add money to this, and mods are fucked. Any big project has several people involved - can you guess what happens once it comes to dividing the money? Can you?

You are twisting the meaning of mods. They have always been free because they are regarded as a hobby, cooperative or not. Modders are not expected to deliver professional work or support. Many mods have bugs and many players are actually bugtesting. No modder has ever been forced to share their work but they do regardless because why the fuck not.
Its not entilement, its an ecosystem that has been working nicely for decades.
But why am I even responding to a troll.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

He's earned $500? Wow.. Haven't really counted, but i think i might have gotten around $60 or so, if i combine all my mods. I'm not complaining, just saying that $500 is a lot, I havent heard from any other modder who has gotten that much, i can only congratulate him
Imo, modding is a hobby and that's why it has certain qualities over paid work. Hobbies very rarely generates any money, usually it costs money. If people spend time to download, play and comment on your work in positive ways that's awesome and the modder should be thankful. If someone decides to donate to his hobby he should be even more thankful. It's no different than people sharing free music, art or whatever, most of these people don't get paid.. I listen a lot to artists on Soundcloud, some are very talented and they ask for nothing in return, they only want people to appreciate their work and what they've put into it..

Entitled? Entitled?! Let's turn it around.
Modders aren't entitled to money. They should go make a fucking game if they want money.
