That's the greatest aspect about the combat in a game like this. I mean it may have its fair share of faults, but you can actually use different ways/tactics to slay them beasts/hoomans and experiment with various techniques on the fly.
There's the Geralt who likes it easy and uses rolling and Quen all the time, and there's the one, almost masochistic, who seeks for more challenge and likes to parry/dodge instead, limiting rolling and avoiding Quen like the plague.
A proper stamina bar would have been the cherry on top of the pie, but alas it's a privilege that only horses can obtain.
From what I've gathered if you hold down the dodge button you roll but if you tap it you do more like a pirouette dodge which is shorter distance and more cannon than fucking rolling around on the ground like a fucking spaz like in Witcher 2.
I really hope they improved the combat so it isn't like 2, I even liked Witcher 1 combat better and it wasn't great.
I'm not going to watch it myself, but somebody else said he mentions town guards knock you out instead of killing you. Then they rob you and dump you in the wilderness.
The only open world action rpg that I can think off that has good combat is Kingdoms of Amalur. I say good but it was also very repetitive. It's also not as much of an open world game as Skyrim or Witcher 3 but I think it still qualifies.
I'm sure there're more but that's the only other one I can remember that is open world and has good combat. That said, no idea if it's better than Witcher 3 combat since none of us have played it yet.
*edit* Dark Souls 1 and 2? It's sort of open world and action RPG, maybe? Well, it's perhaps not open world like Skyrim/TW3 but still.
I don't really disagree with you. Amalur's combat is pretty good because it has tight controls, but let's not forget all the weapons had like 2 special moves only, no tactics required, and it was all just reflex in blocking and rolling.
Souls games have good combat, but a lot of that comes from the tension. I'd say Bloodbourne is the one that really nailed it as it has more effective combos and charging attacks.
But really the point I was trying to make was that open world action rpgs really don't have good combat in general, and TW3 is looking good because it seems to have all that you really need. Tactical, reflex, tension, variations with the crossbow, daggers, bombs, traps and sign. Also it is the a newest game with up to current day standards animations, that really helps in action games.
TW2 combat wasn't all that different from Dark Souls, but it had a lot less depth, and DS had a more robust char system too. They can easily take a few hints from DS and incorporate them into their open-world games: make all attacks use stamina, and then tie stamina and regen to stats - voila, that's already much less brainless than Skyrim et al.
The weird thing is when they did the initial unveil at E3 (or wherever it was), they said based on feeback from TW2 that they were going to heavily crib from Dark Souls to improve combat for TW3. It doesn't seem radically different from TW2 combat though from the videos I have seen.
The last 2 are the same tavern from different angles but the first picture has a different one. Plus the lighting in the first one is from
candles and the last 2 is from fire torches.
Looks so different it could be two different games imo, the lightning is extremely flat in that new screen.
Witcher 1 looks almost as good, apart from less poly's for the character models.. i even think i prefer witcher 1, the characters are full bright in the new screen, if the lightning is from candles its laughable
One guy says that the lighting displayed in the original shots is from fire and smoke
It's no wonder people can't agree on anything
The original shots, all of them, including the reveal video, REEK of atmosphere. As I said, the new one looks sterile, as in very clean cut and gamey looking, very much unlike everything we were originally shown.
Third person sounds wise. You should listen to him.
But no, I see what you're saying. It doesn't look atmospheric at all. You have any pictures of the original tavern?
@Vurt: Yeah, that's true. Actually reminds of TW1 in that SS.

No wonder we get 15 Cods with the same engine for a decade, why bother with gfx or next gen when lot of people clearly cannot see the difference above.
So the fucking debate confuckingtinues. Now it looks sterile and shitty well maybe but atleast no 30fps monkeyshit as promised...thank god and my dick!

pretty sure people can see the difference, it's more about being able to be neutral or being a fan in shining armor, coming to the devs rescue
I've always found that if the graphics are good you dont even notice them.
Bad graphics can pull you out of the game but games like witcher 2 even, the screenshots look soo good but then when i play i forget all about it.
I think thats where the entitlement comes from too, you think if you dont notice they're not good enough which is sad.
Funny thing about those old tavern screens, that was back when CD Projekt said "and it's still running on the old renderer. Just you wait until you see how much better the new renderer looks!"
I just don't like (and its been happening for years now) that they dupe you with the crazy over the top graphics when the product really is nothing like it. At the beginning they were heavily selling this product on graphics and technical achievements.
If it was any other product wouldn't this shit be illegal? They show you a Ferrari so you pre-order, then a corolla is delivered to your door. I guess it is legal.. i.e McDonalds burger picture vs. actual product received.
