hard job @ ms Razz

but yes since rt is dead they couldnt name it windows phone cause it will be used for small tablet (<7") too. and they couldnt name it just windows mobile cause everyone would laugh (besides the fact that windows mobile wasnt thaaaaaaaaaaaat bad)

Given that the search index has been proven to have a minimal impact on performance (at least on Win7, I don't know about other versions of Windows) I never disable it given that I find myself using it much more frequently than I would have thought. Rather use it than have my desktop cluttered with direct access icons or folders (only have 7 icons on my 1080p desktop ATM). But it's stil useful to customize what gets indexed and what doesn't, depending on what you look for more often Razz

Who said anything about performance impact? Windows "indexer" is anything but impressive, it has been absolutely abysmal since Windows Vista. It's slow, unresponsive and after a few months takes up a database nearing 10 fucking GB. But hey, apparently it's "useful"

I'll stick with Everything thanks, a database of a hundred KB and *immediate* searching and indexing, with no hassles.

It has been the same since Windows Vista and now it does it on Windows 8.1 too, as my link shows. Just because *you* don't have problems doesn't mean nobody else does Wink I was never a fan of the way WinV+ uses the indexer for *searching*, though the PREFETCHER is fantastic, the INDEXER is just plain poor -- to ME - and I always seek to replace it with something superior, quicker, more efficient, more capable.

Actually in win 7 you could put everything in the start menu and let the start menu also only search within the start menu. That was quick for obvious reasons.

It's a system hog, period!, and the reason for most 100% CPU spikes, behind ones back Wink

Removed from the system altogether would be perfect, but we don't live in a perfect world, so disabling it does the job Smile

Well, I've always had it enabled and I've not experienced any 100% CPU spikes. In the past I've monitored those values for hours several times and then read the extensive log with no sign of that Wink

Ah, you must be AMD. Yes, they never spike, in fact, they never even move, for anything. Even an Android wakelock couldn't get that one up.

Have they already specified what 'free' version we are getting... as in: what will my Win7 Ultimate give me or I'll just get lumped with everyone else and get a home version?

It seems like there's only two applicable versions of Win10 for "us", that's Home and Pro, and I reckon the "free upgrade!" will be a blanket one going to Home.

We'd certainly hope so.. but then... this is a free upgrade, so I don't think they're going to take into account what you paid for the previous version, especially when it's Win7 that is nearly 6 years old. I think their rationale might just be "this is free, if you want the best version; buy it" sort of thing. You know how Microsoft are grinhurt
