Is it worth upgrading a GTX 770 4GB to a GTX 970 4GB?

And 4GB VRAMz for a 128 bit bus... hmmmmz, not sure if it's worth it.
|
I'm assuming he can get it for around the same price. So what would have more impact these days: the extra ram (even on a 128bit bus not fully optimized) or the stock base clock.
I would argue the ram with the games that have been released this year.
That being said: I also wanted to argue to try and bump up to a 970, by selling the games... maybe not go for a new case and such. But again I'm assuming he looked into that.

You could have just posted that in the first place instead of saying... well, nothing

I did look, tried to "move" things around but i believe that with my cpu (Phenom II x4 965 @3.8 ) anything around gtx 970, imho, would be an overkill.
I need to buy new monitor (decided to go with Dell U2414H) since my old one, Dell U2311H, has some kind of a smudge that wont go away. Also, SSD and extra HDD are a must. I can drop case tho (Fractal Design Define R5) and then i would have money for 970 gtx, but i believe there's gonna be a huge bottleneck with my cpu.
So, im back to 960 gtx.
But like i said, to be completely honest, im kinda scared to overclock anything (my cpu was oveclocked by a buddy of mine), so just to be on the safe side, i'd like to go with stock 960 gtx (actually factory overclocked card), since those gpu manufacturers know what they're doing. They know what they are doing, right?
And like Morphineus nicely put it, what brings more to the table, extra 2gb on Gigabyte or higher stock clock on Gainward?

Wellllll... extra 2GB for sure but with that CPU not even the 970 would help.
You absolutely need to invest on a new CPU (and mobo and RAM, guessing you still have DDR2?). IMO... I would forget the case and the monitor, but I don't know how bad that smudge is

My computer is kinda really old now and i cant afford to invest much into it atm. Motherboard is Asrock 870 Extreme 3 (Am3 socket only; kudos to me, great buy.NOT ) . Ram is ddr3.
And regarding that smudge, i dont know what it is. Of course, it appeared just after my monitor warranty was over. Which, with my luck in general, i should have expected it, the moment i bought it few years ago. It's clearly visible when monitor powers on and goes semi transparent when monitor warms up. However, it is still visible on grey, green surfaces. Not by much, but it's still there and it pisses me off.
I'll definately buy new cpu/mbo combo somewhere around Christmas, it's just that im kinda short on cash atm.

I use a nVidia at the moment, so don't mistake me for an AMD troll... but why are you so set on NOT buying AMD?
nVidia's Maxwell architecture is great and the 970 is a great card. The 960, however, is not. It is indeed crippled by the 128bit bus. For gaming at 1080p, I'd advise you to get an AMD 280X (rebranded 7970 GHz edition).
It is hotter than the 960 but has 3 GB VRAM with an 384bit bus. It is the best card for 1080p gaming available now.
If you want more power, the 970 is a no-brainer. The 960 is a card that doesn't make sense... maybe it's for people who want to play at 720p with Ultra settings

Yup, I have to agree with me7 on this... if you can find one, a 7970GE/280X is by far the better choice over the 960 and it's still very much a viable gaming card.

As a recent owner of a 280x I'm amazed by how good this one performs. It's cheap also (bought it for 148 pounds). I'm gaming at 1080p with a 8yr old cpu also.

So, I might upgrade my GPU soon and I'll likely be jumping AMD again because I see no point in paying more for an nDerpia card only to be limited to 2GB VRAM.
I'm looking at this one, since it's the cheapest I can find (the closest alternative is a sapphire card that costs 30€ more) at ~175€. I wasn't planning to update it now but... TW3.
Right now I'm at 900p and 2GB/3GB VRAM wouldn't really feel that different, but by xmas I'm considering to (finally) upgrade to a 1080p monitor so the AMDerp card makes more sense to me on all fronts.
Any ideas/advice/alternatives (besides getting a 970, unless you're willing to fork over the remaining 300€, in that case we have a deal)?

AMD is supposed to be announcing some things at E3, so I think it's worth waiting until then at least, to see what's coming. On the mid/low end they supposedly have rebrands again, but if the release is soon enough, it might cause some shifts in prices for both AMD and Nvidia and give you some more options.
Nvidia's allegedly imminent 980 Ti might have a similar effect.

Normally I'd say go for the 280 since I have an OCed 7950 myself that still performs good enough for me. But at this time I would not invest in that old gen anymore and just wait for AMDs new announcements.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

i see your way of thinking and that you already have 980 SLI.
but, if i was to make this choice it would easily be Titan X over 980SLI. titan x is a bit cheaper than 980 SLI here. yes titan x is slower in some games but faster in others. also it has advantage of ridiculous amount of vram, less power, less heat, less noise, less PCIE slots used, less clutter inside case. i just couldn't spend so much on SLI setup and already be hitting vram ceiling in many recent games.

Why don't you purchase the MSI R9 280x Gaming Edition? It's already OC'ed at 972 and it's cheaper than the VTX3D implementation.

Guess I'll wait a bit for the 980ti and AMDerp's 390, see what those two will do to the market... maybe the standard 290 will fall to 200-220€? That would be good.

in case you missed the news/rumors Fiji aims at $849 retail price, and might not even be called 390, it might have fancy title similar to nvidia's titan. actual 390 might just be rebrand from last years gpus (and a year before that).

As long as you keep gaming on 1080p the 280x is more than enough, especially if you have a decent cpu.

Well, the 280x is based on the GCN 1.0 architecture (it's basically a tweaked 7970 GHz Edition) while the 290-series is using an updated design (GCN 1.1 or GCN 2 depending on who you ask) which has updated performance features that will show better efficiency with DX12 etc.

inb4 all are like "AMD LOLOL, WATERCOOLING NEEDED"... tbh, Titan X reference cooler for example is not enough for the card.

Yeah the Titan X cooler is more than enough. There is however a problem with the drivers or the card's BIOS and the fan does not increase the speed if the card gets hotter, resulting in many people complaining on forums about overheating.
If you use a custom fan profile that shit takes care of it. The card never goes beyond 70 degrees when playing GTA5 and Witcher 3 with everything turned up. (and the fan stays somewhere around 60% speed).
