Star Citizen FPS module is delayed for the foreseeable future. Chris Roberts writes that the current FPS build, officially known as Star Marine, "doesn't live up to the standards we want to achieve with Star Citizen". He doesn't know for sure when the module will be ready for public consumption.

What's just happened is the 'we can't make the game we promised, so sorry, but please, here's another $400 ship you can buy for the other game we may or may not be able to make' excuse.

This whole thing has become a bad joke, and I know it's petty, even a little unfair, but I hope the thousands of people who have paid, quite literally, millions of dollars into this game, lose everything.

That would send a signal worldwide that things are not right in the land of Kickstarter, Preorders, broken promises and half-finished products.

The 400$ ship looks great, but what the fuck are the thinking

What's the deal with all these ships anyway, do you really have to purchase all of them when the game is actually released? I thought you'd get all of them.

This game sounds more and more like a big social experiment that aims to measure the naivety/patience/gullibility of the human race and the effectiveness of some media/marketing manipulating instruments.

Supposedly you 'can' buy them for in game money. (Once the game is released)

but considering how much they charge for them now... I can't imagine what they cost in game.

Honestly, Star Shitizen is just an enormous pathetic joke, meanwhile Roberts is getting rich off the gullible idiots that keep throwing him $200, $300, $400 for a digital ship that doesn't even exist. Yay. Now that Star Marine has been delayed "indefinitely", that's going to end up crippling development schedule for the rest of the game too, since FPS combat/exploration was crux to the whole game.

Squadron 42 sure as hell won't be out this year and I'm willing to bet the whole game will likely slip into 2017 at the earliest. Meanwhile, here's another $400 ship! It's LIMITED so quick, snap it up now!

I don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand, the longer this goes on the more I feel as if I dodged a $40 bullet. However, I also feel my hopes and dreams being crushed (with what sounds like a maniacally greedy laugh in the background). I know it was pretty dumb to get my hopes up on promises, but I'd be lying if a part of me didn't think they'd pull something glorious off in the beginning.

Having said all that, I wasn't impressed at all when I got the opportunity to play for a weekend when they gave out those expo codes. To me it felt like the flight part of the game didn't know what it wanted to be.....

I was expecting freelancer like point and click combat. I got that somewhat, until I dug a bit further and took a gander at the control mappings, which revealed more keys than a fully fledged aircraft simulator like DCS - nigh impossible to play effectively with a keyboard and mouse.

Maybe all my time in Elite has spoiled me, but as high a learning curve as that game has, once you get the basics down it has relatively few mappings to worry about in combat. I'm pretty sure I counted something along the lines of 7 different key mappings having to do with shields in SC....that's just...too much.

So where does this game fall exactly in the spectrum of sim vs. arcade? Because it sure as fuck ain't Freelancer.

I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

... and this was even before they crippled mouse control because the brats with $300 HOTAS setups were whining about unfair advantage. It only got worse since then. Sure, you CAN play with m/k, but it's unnecessarily sluggish and limited now compared to how it used to be.

No, I thought this was the reason of the 'KS', to actually fund a decent game.

The developers "claim" (quotation marks for emphasis because I fully believe they're lying) all ships can be acquired in-game "only" by using in-universe credits and that the cash-for-ships option will vanish when the game is launched. They "claim" that selling ships for real money right now is solely to increase funding for the game since they also "claim" there won't be any monetary aspects when it's launched, except for additional pilot slots (save slots in every other game but this one) or perhaps Elite-style ship paintjobs.

You'll notice a lot of quotation marks here.

So you thought you would get all of the ships when you pledged $35 ? (or whatever the minimum was?
You can get them ingame with ingame currency so there is no actual need to buy another ship.

Those extra slots arent needed as well to play the game but like you said some people would pay $250 to paint their armor or whatever Laughing

Btw its just 2 months on that fps thingy

It's needed for me and I'm sure quite a few others, I don't know of any other online game (except Elite?) that has a single-slot policy, even the worst of the worst f2p titles offer more than a single slot, and yup, reading the Elite Defence Force posts shows that Braben selling ship "paint" is applauded for being a fantastic venture and people are SO grateful for the chance to customise their ship. As for the "two additional months" comment, I don't think he meant that it's delayed 2 months.. just that delaying FPS by 2 months doesn't mean SC is delayed 2 months too.

Reading the full explanation shows just how shocking the development is, with them having to go back and completely rewrite entire systems fundamental to the game on the whole. It's ridiculous, too much goddamn feature creep, too much monetisation, not enough progress Sad

I wonder if the first alpha of the majority of the game has already been completed, but they won't show it because their cash train would grind to a halt.

I fully expect there to be a working universe with a lot of the game mechanics already in place, but they won't show it. Perhaps that's the $100mil strech goal Laughing

Sensible developers would have completed a working space combat/trading universe first, THEN added the FPS later.

Of course, if they did that, then they wouldn't have raised more cash...

By the numbers, only 15% of the team has been working on Star Marine; it’s just been the major focus because it was the next public release.

So 85% is working on other stuff, but according to you it might be 5% universe development and 80% money grabbing Very Happy

To be honest, after having read those articles/explanations it sounds to me like their engineering/programming team has no idea what in the fuck they are doing. It's almost as if they were expecting to get minimal funding, and were sure they could deliver on such an amount. But then, when the whole thing exploded, they realized they were way out of their depth, but had to keep going, as they had already taken all that money.

And outsourcing/delegating the FPS portion to some no name developers with jack shit under their belt? Why don't they ask RockSteady how THEIR latest outsourcing decision went! Very Happy Crying or Very sad

When this....thing...whatever it may be finally boils over, the resulting shitstorm is going to be unlike anything we've seen on the internet before. I just hope I'll be alive to see it (with the current delays I may not be!)

Funny how they're not showing anything though, that's the point. Several years into development, $85m raised, and what do we have? A system-raping tiny-map arena with a handful of ships and a couple of hangars. Very PRETTY hangars, sure, but still just four walls a ceiling and a floor. Yet they keep on requesting donations and trying to sell increasingly more expensive virtual ships.. and now an "indefinite" delay to one of the absolute central cores of the game?

You've got a lot more faith than I do.
