http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-06-25-dice-explains-star-wars-battlefront-on-rails-at-ats

Quote:

Eurogamer: Speaking of vehicles, I have to ask about space battles. Why was the decision made not to include combat in space itself? It was in previous Battlefront games and is something fans have come to expect.

Ingvarsdottir: We're two generations on from the last Battlefront. Our goal was to hit all the core mechanics of the series. So the fantasy for us was to be able to engage in a dogfight, be in the cockpit of an X-Wing or TIE Fighter. And you can absolutely do that.

And we have another mode which we haven't shown yet called Fighter Squadron. That has big, epic dogfights. We'll be talking more about that in the not too distant future.

Eurogamer: Are full-on space battles possible for the future? Would the Frostbite engine support it, or is it too much of a leap?

Ingvarsdottir: Frostbite is incredibly powerful. There are so many things in Star Wars we would like to see in the future. We have to pick and choose.

Eurogamer: And which things are those?

Ingvarsdottir: Many things! [laughs] I can't tell you because as soon as I say them they're something we've promised to a lot of people.

... A separate mode for dogfighting isn't something I'm interested in.

They're chopping the game up into little pieces.

Shouldn't that mean that current gen consoles, as anaemic as they are, are a lot more powerful than the consoles that prior BF games ran on, and therefore far more capable of handling space combat? I'm not sure what he was trying to accomplish by raising that. Other than maybe "it was a real long time ago, you should just forget about it".

they're asshats, that's the only reason you need.

I don't see how space battle would be a matter of being demanding .. other then coding a new physics model for space ...

Pfft it's obvious this will be a future DLC. It's too important to miss out, and they want to maximise the profits from this game as much as possible, especially with the movie due out later - I wouldn't be too surprised to see the space combat DLC expansion released in November.

From the video it looked like some kind of an arcadish point and click thing, with the way it smoothly turned and aimed.

Quote:
Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, the studio's general manager Patrick Bach was asked whether the lack of a single-player mode was a consequence of needing to launch prior to the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens movie.

Bach responds by saying, although the release deadline "did influence [DICE's] decisions early on," it never reached the stage of concepting a single-player campaign.

And there we have it, that's pretty much proof to me that everything is keyed in to the movie - I can almost guarantee that the reason space combat isn't in, is purely time-restraint, and they have already worked on it, it is probably in an early alpha state, and will be released perhaps Dec/Jan while SW fever is at a high point - for $19.99 of course.

Well, after experiencing BF3's and BF4's "glorious" single-player I say good for them.
Too bad that the MP does not really look promising at all.
