Nope, I'm the same. I appreciate hack-free emulation, but as long as it plays and looks good; I'm happy! The MAME team scoff at the likes of Model2 Emu and zINC because of the hacks and workarounds, but the end result is that I was playing Tekken 3 and Daytona USA years before MAME could even load the games, let alone play them at a decent framerate.

It's the same with SNES too, I've been playing emulated SNES games since 1996 on my old 486 and P1s. Now bSNES requires an i5/i7 to do much the same thing only with more "accuracy"

Besides with hacked emulation you can always blame your death on the improper emulation Cool Face

I'd say there are two goals to emulation. One is to 'just' play the games and the other is to archive/preserve them in case the original is no longer feasible to use, which will happen. For the latter a proper emulation seems more useful Smile

Couldn't agree more Smile Which actually does come into the bSNES situation too; zsnes is so hacky and hodgepodged together that any ROM hacks made for that emulator don't even work on the actual hardware. Same with timings too, which are often off in emulations (zsnes/snes9x at least) compared to the real thing.

I haven't seen anyone post this yet and it's almost a month old, but apparently there have been some mighty impressive leaps forward in GPU emulation on Citra;

(if you want to see comparisons between native hardware and emulated, here's a playthrough; https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=671&v=wuoBdEK2Tf0 )

There's still no audio emulation and that's going to mean a significant speed decrease once that's implemented (if emulation history is anything to by grinhurt) but this is making great strides now. Some missing effects (water isn't rendered at all?) and speed is around half, but it's definitely getting there. Unlike previous videos (such as Super Monkey Ball 3D) this *hasn't* been sped up, this is real time like the Zelda vid though it requires a very high-end processor at the moment. Still, deliciously tangible progress.

.... I'm suddenly regretting my recent 3DS purchase, haha! By the time I can afford to scrape together the money for a Gateway cart, Citra will be running games just fine with 3x intres Very Happy

~edit~

Speaking of "3x intres", I noticed this hasn't been posted either;

Cave Story 3D software renderer vs hardware renderer. Default resolution for 3DS is 400x240 (320x240 for bottom screen) and Citra in HW mode outputs at 1080p. This was a much older video so it's massively broken all over the place Laughing

At least citra takes long enough, that my interest in pokemon whatever has waned, which is good. I sometimes feel like I want to play them, even though I dont think they're any good Laughing

And is there a Cave Story Wii U version? That game loves to be rereleased around. Dont think I'll look at the 3D version though. Cave Story+ ftw.

http://www.stoneagegamer.com/dreamcast-usb.html

This is only for true Dreamcast fanatics and it's less about emulation and more about dedicated hardware, but it definitely belongs here Smile The v4 and v5 models of the Dreamcast USB-GDROM are on sale at StoneAge Gamer for a ball-shrivellingly expensive $170 (for v4) and $215 (for v5)

Fantastic devices if you own a Dreamcast, don't want to deal with emulation glitches, have an insane amount of disposable income.. and prefer games loading super-fast off a single storage medium rather than super slow, and loud, from multiple discs Very Happy

Demul Alpha has finally received its first public build, though most of the changes have been dealing with arcade emulation it's nice to see Demul itself still receiving development Smile They've even started working on a new DX11 renderer but it's less than optimal right now.

Last i tried it was over a year ago. And the performance was pretty bad for me. Tried several differend Dolphin builds to no success.
Hopefully some others know more about how it runs now, as it was pretty fun from the bits i played back then Very Happy

Man,i would love one of those.I have my DC sitting in a box without much use,the damn cd drive is having issues reading anything and that USB thing would revive it.Sadly,the costs are astronomic (here i was thinking "oh it wont be more than 50 bucks,alright" Laughing )

It's still a very intensive game, expect slowdowns and terrible audio scratching, as well as the infamous "FIFO is overflown by GatherPipe. CPU thread is too fast!" insta-crash. TLS is, aside from Rogue Squadron/Leader, the most intensive Wii title I've seen and emulating it is a pain in the arse :\

As for WiiU? Nothing. Not even any chatter right now and the Dolphin team have categorically stated they aren't working on it and won't be working on it for some time, so there's that. The WiiU isn't even hacked yet, so without the ability to run custom code it will be very difficult for potential developers to work on emulation without being able to document the functionality fully.

Thanks for the answers!
Think i'll wait for more polish before trying TLS then, don't wanna go through the same hoops i had to play Rogue Galaxy on PCSX2 Laughing

@Kaan_

I was testing out TLS last night on the latest Ishiiruka build (which is FASTER than the official ones, so if a game runs like ass in Ishiiruka.. that's a bad sign) and the FIFO crash was still a hard one. The crash dialogue popped up right outside the tutorial area with "Yes" and "No" options, clicking "Yes" just caused the dialogue box to open again, clicking "No" crashed the emulator.

@ZezoS

Rogue Galaxy... phew... I remember the issues with that way back when Very Happy It's near perfect nowadays but sadly Hardware Mode still breaks shadows Sad Still, rather shadow-less characters and 3-4x more beautiful ones than not Very Happy

I just keep pressing yes and eventually it continues. Very Happy (it doesn't come up anymore though, since I disabled panic handlers. I'm aware that it just hides them.) I know about Ishiiruka, but it's for some reason slower for me. My pc is pretty old, I have a dx10 gpu maybe that's why.

Nah, that wasn't even the worst.... I remember a planet that, once in a while (and by that i mean freaking frequently Laughing ) the game just threw your character up, and you just kept walking over the map, without any way to descend... so only way to go back was load a save/savestate. I almost broke my F1/F3 keys playing that planet Laughing Laughing Laughing

EDIT - worth it tho, Rogue Galaxy is such a gem it could be easily a X360/PS3 game.

I'll try that one next time Very Happy I gave up on TLS for now, it requires above my spec rig to play it properly and even then, it still stutters and hitches with the sound, then you get to the towns and see the framerate cripple there too Sad

@ZezoS

Remember the issue with the clamp settings? Where your character would be constantly facing one direction and unable to lock on or attack enemies? Good times(!) Laughing And yep, when you're trying to ride the tram on one of the planets, you'd often (and yes, like you said; OFTEN!) fall through the world. AWESOME!

I remember there was a problem with the game's protection too, when it became impossible to change between disk 1 to 2... So my first time i played the game till there, just to find out it was impossible to continue. Then someone made a "mashup" of both isos on a dual layer, then i could play... But my save wasn't good for that version, so i had to freaking start over Laughing
Good times, still worth it Very Happy

When i tried rogue galaxy it worked well enough on hw, but for flashbacks i had to switch over to software mode as they don't work at all in hw mode.

It works great on HW, but shadows don't. At all. They've never fixed them Sad The flashback FMVs can be fixed a lot easier thanks to a "use SW mode for FMVs" hack so that it switches automatically and you don't have to press F9 any more.. but yeah, the sepia flashback vids are broken in HW Sad

Sadly (though understandably I guess) the developers are less concerned with HW mode of late and working instead on improving SW mode even more. More accurate, if less pretty, emulation.
