Completed it after 80 hours and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Personally I would have preferred a more talkative big boss (way it is makes sense in the context though), more cutscenes, and the last part was definitely rushed out and feels incomplete (though the 'phantom episode' video gives some resolution at least), but even with these things not being the way I would preferred them, it was an amazing game and tons of fun with the best gameplay metal gear ever had imo.
I thought the story overall is fine if you listen to the tapes which offer plenty of exposition and are essentially new optional versions of codec conversations.
Farewell Metal Gear.... I'll definitely miss this stuff big time.

Yeah it probably was a bit rushed near the end, that cut mission was #51 but the game ends on mission #46 though it could have been more of those filler missions where you repeat earlier ops with a additional requirement set such as having to procure equipment on sight, game over if you are detected or you won't be able to use the chicken hat and reflex move.

That's it. In a 50-100h game, V meets Skull Face 3-4 times, and only in the last time does he speak barely one sentence.

Was it always the plan to use Sutherland? If so, I wonder if money factored into it. I have no experience with the rest of the series, but even considered in isolation the muteness is odd. Especially when there are instances where the dialogue of other NPCs seems to indicate an interjection by Snake was intended. Regardless, Sutherland seems like an odd choice to me. If Kojima wanted to go Hollywood for the last hurrah, he would have been better off plumbing for the ultimate wink to the audience and hiring Kurt Russell.

I like a talkative snake as it used to be in earlier titles, but it's inentional here to have him barely talk and Kojima said as much long before the release.
Quote: | "As much as possible, Snake will act based on the player rather than doing things like making spontaneous comments or flirting with women.
In fact. this time, Snake won't really speak much at all. MGS5 is an open world game focused on giving freedom to the player who will drive Snake's action.
Snake himself will be more of a silent protagonist similar to Mad Max in Mad Max 2. It's the characters around him who will expand the story." |
The only critiscism I can bring to that is that it 'used to be different' but that's not really valid imo.
It doesn't have to be the way it used to be, it's just different in this title, and not a dealbreaker for me.

I miss the Codec interactions between Snake and other characters. That's what made MGS special. Tapes are just there for you to listen, but it's not the same. I think it's a terrible, even a lazy way to develop a story - it makes it feel kind of distant and soulless. That's why I didn't care much for Bioshock: Infinite either...

I miss em too but to me they don't feel much different from tapes.
You sit there for 5-15 minutes listening to exposition either way, the only real difference is that you can choose when or if you want to spend that time and you don't see the codec faces.
Oh and of course you can listen to em while you're en route to somewhere which is nice.
Venom Snake also talks more in tapes than anywhere else so there's that bonus too.
If I had the choice would I take an MGS3 or MGS4 style PS4 metal gear over Phantom Pain style?
Yes most likely, because I'm one of those guys who always enjoyed long codec conversations and endless cutscenes almost eclipsing the gameplay time
What we got is still an amazing game though.
It's like going from Mass Effect 1 to 2.
I wanted a game like 1, and 2 wasn't that and I was kinda pissed at the time but damn it was still great on it's own.
Would I have preferred it to be more like ME1? Yeah sure, but that doesn't mean ME2 wasn't great.

Doesn't work like that when you are supposed to be playing a charismatic leader.
But that's hardly the only problem with the game's script and characterization. It's not just V; Ocelot, "Eli", "Rebenok", the "Man on Fire" are all appearances of past characters that either barely resemble their old personalities or are entirely pointless.
Who wasn't excited seeing a kid Psycho Mantis in the trailers? But turns out no matter how many times he appears in the game he doesn't do much else than what you saw him do for a few seconds in the trailers. His pseudoappearance in MGS4 for a few seconds was far more meaningful than this.
And the "personally" cut/directed trailers by Kojima promising "the missing link", "men become demons", "revenge" are just flat out lying. It's just another heroic mission, nothing to do with Big Boss becoming the MG1/2 villain.

@kazemaky You most certainly will get more out of it by understanding at least MGS3 and Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes. There are certain points and twists in the game that only have effect if you know those. There's a movie by KefkaProduction on YT for each.

Got you covered with what matters for this game.

consolitis wrote: | The chronology of the games is this:

MGS:PW
MGSV:GZ

MG2
MGS1
MGS2
MGS4
MGR (new plot, irrelevant to the overarching plot of the series)
Here is what you need to know:
In MGS3 a soldier called Naked Snake working for FOX was given the mission to take down his mentor, The Boss, the mother of Special Forces (this is supposed to mean one of the greatest soldiers/leaders I guess). She apparently defected to the Soviet Union and was involved in a nuclear incident. Your commander is called Major Zero. A "friendly rivalry" with what would turn out to be a quadruple(?) spy called Ocelot starts in this game. As Naked Snake you succeed in your mission and kill her and you are given the title of Big Boss, because "you are even above the Boss" now. In the end, in a twist, you learn that the defection of The Boss was orchestrated by America because they needed a scapegoat to kill her themselves. The Boss was just following orders knowing fully well and having accepted her mission was to defect, be labeled as a traitor by her country, a monster by the world for her supposed involvement in the nuclear incident and finally be killed by her very own apprentice. Her philosophy was that for a soldier the only thing that matters is "the mission", nothing more, nothing less. There are no bad or good countries, all this changes as the times change. As a soldier you just have to believe in "the end", "the mission", whatever you want to call it.
Now, the following is pieced from here and there but mostly from the retcons in MGS4 I believe: Big Boss leaves the FOX unit. Along with his commander in the above mission: Zero, Ocelot and other people they create the organization The Patriots. They are inspired by The Boss' will. Zero interprets her will as the need to secretly run the world to unify it. Big Boss interprets her will as the need for soldiers to be free from goverments. They clash. Zero turns Big Boss into an icon for the world. Big Boss does not like that. Zero worries what would happen if he lost Big Boss so he clones him. Three clones/children of Big Boss are made. These are Liquid Snake (MGS1 villain), Solid Snake (MG1/2 & MGS1/4 protagonist), Solidus Snake (MGS2 villain). Big Boss does not like that and leaves the organization.
In Peace Walker: Still being inspired by his mentor Big Boss continues to want to create an army without a nation. Along with Kazuhira Miller they do just that. Their "Mother Base" is called Militaires Sans Frontières.
In Ground Zeroes Big Boss is in a rescue mission of some characters from Peace Walker (Paz, Chico), when an organization called XOF and lead by Skull Face attacks and destroys their Mother Base.
Big Boss falls in a 9 year comma. Commence The Phantom Pain's plot where Big Boss wakes from his coma and is given the task to rescue the recently captured Kazuhira Miller and create again their Mother Base, this time called Diamond Dogs. Ocelot assists him. <Events of the game take place here which I won't spoil.>
After this game in the timeline, in Metal Gear 1, a young rookie soldier called Solid Snake is tasked by his commander, Big Boss, to execute "Operation Intrude N313": infiltrate a place called "Outer Heaven" where a nuclear weapon (Metal Gear) is said to being developed. Solid Snake goes there only to find out Big Boss himself is the terrorist's leader. Outer Heaven is yet another iteration of Big Boss' attempt to create "a nation without an army". The place is bombed but Big Boss, apparently, survives.
In Metal Gear 2, Solid Snake is sent to Zanzibar Land on a mission. Turns out the bad guy's leader is, yes, again Big Boss. Solid Snake learns Big Boss was his "father" (doesn't know he is his clone). Big Boss' world view appears to be a further distorted view of The Boss's view: "Start a war, fan its flames, and create victims... then save them, train them... and feed them back onto the battlefield." he tells Snake. Solid Snake burns him alive. In MGS4 Big Boss's death is retconned and we learn how over the years: he survived but was in a coma, and Zero created AIs to run the world (because that's what HE thought The Boss would want) and how these AIs went out of control and made the world a shitty place.
.
.
.
In MGS4, Ocelot who has been one of the bad guys in MGS1, 2 & 4, dies and we learn in truth he wasn't such a bad guy but he had a master plan to act like he was. In truth he was always in Big Boss' side and opposing Zero. Big Boss turns out to not be such a bad dude himself. Finally Big Boss kills Zero, a senile old man by now, whose AIs went out of control long ago and turned the world into a shitty place and were at least partially responsible for the events in MGS1, 2 and 4.
Big Boss finally understands The Boss's will before he dies:
Quote: | Boss... You were right. It's not about changing the world. It's about doing our best to leave the world... The way it is. It's about respecting the will of others... And believing in your own. Isn't that... What you fought for? At last... I understand the meaning behind what you did. At last... I understand the truth behind your courage. |
At which point the player is like was that really THAT hard to understand?
Solid Snake's body is deteriorating very fast and will die soon (something like a few months?). He decides to live his last days as Big Boss told him: "not as a snake, but as a man". The end.
Alternative explanation of the ending of MGS4:
And do note some of the above events are retconned by this game but I didn't include these retcons because they are revealed as twists, so you gotta play it first. |
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."

"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."

What the fuck is going on in this thread?
To be ontopic:
I AM FUCKING RAGING, that it doesn't work for me.
Yesterday i spent like 5 hours downloading several releases, including fitgirls repack and patch, and following every tutorial i found.
Nothing fucking works regarding the savegame.
No matter which savegames i put into that ../remote/ folder, it never reads that savegame at all.
Funny thing is, when i play a bit in the hospital, i can cleary see that the file gets changed after a checkpoint. When i press ESC and go to the title menu, the first button is "Continue game". Yet when i exit and restart the game, it always is "Start game" and i start at the very first cutscene in the hospital. I even tried after quitting to title menu, to replace the savegame files. Nope, continues from last checkpoint, wtf.
I don't understand what the fuck is going on here.
