Edge of Space
Quote: |
Edge of Space is a 2D survival, exploration, terraforming, crafting, and building game. It places you in a dynamic open-world sandbox where you must build, create, mold, and work to survive in the deepest, darkest, weirdest, and possibly most interesting part of the "un-known" universe. The world itself is alive, and working against you. You can't let your guard down, or everything you've worked for will be lost!
|
Multiplayer: yes

Trailer: Official Site
Steam Page: Link
So far it's pretty cool, especially if you liked Terraria and are following Starbound. Re-Logic is actually giving Handyman some resources to bring Terraria content to Edge of Space
It's on sale on steam right now for 8 bucks. Totally worth it!

I played this in it's development, it has a rather poor server hosting and online play usage, it's not as easy as loading up terria and hosting. Though it may have changed in the last three months

last time i played, they disabled MP alltogether.before they got greenlit, you had to use their weird ass launcher to start the game.hope they drop that kind of "not drm at all"-drm,maybe they already did.
one thing is sure, they need more manpower, progress is made too slow

Spot on
I believe it's either one or two people developing it, and that launcher is dire! |
They show 2 main developers on their site but they have avatars for more people so I think they may be part time?

Launcher seems fine to me. I dunno what it was before but it's pretty basic as hell now and easy to use.
MP has been disabled. Seems they want to get a bunch of other stuff working before they worry about server stuff. They are working hard and paying close attention to the forums

Starbound has just gotten a bigger update sabin, before that it got another just last year or January this year which was adding tons of stuff.
Expected more from the title here, probably better to stay with Terraria and Starbound.

Quote: | Hey ArkCoNauts! Can’t believe we’re really saying it, but here it is! 1.0!! Before you settle in for a 5 page read on the notes for this patch, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you from the team. This journey has been challenging, and at many times exhausting, and we wouldn’t be here today if not for the community and all the years of bug reports, play testing, and support from all of you. Today represents a huge milestone for the game, and for us as a studio, as we step out of Early Access and into the realm of post-release development. We can’t make it clear enough, we plan to stand by Edge of Space, and continue to actively develop new content and features for the game, as well as continue our track record of nuking bugs and issues from orbit. As long as the game sees support from our players, we’ll be here working as hard as ever to keep delivering. We hope to see players who haven’t picked up the game in a long while, return to give it another go, and that those who have been playing actively will still be surprised by what we’ve done since the last public patch at the end of June. We’d also like to give a special thank you to the testers who opted in to the pre-launch testing, and who have been incredibly helpful in getting the game ready for today! Given the sheer size of this patch, we fully expect that things will break, so please be sure to file in game tickets, or join us on Discord live chat for real time tech support help (or just to hang out!). You can find our Discord server here:

Without further ado, we bring to you Edge of Space, 1.0!
These are the abridged notes, please see the Discussion area for the full notes!

Hmm...
User reviews: Mixed (1,450 reviews)
Wonder what on earth is wrong with this one. Really hard to find some co-op games that are truly fun nowadays. Played too much Don't Starve, Terraria, BF3/4/BC already... Need something NEW.
Or... I am just getting old and grumpy.

It got a lot of negative reviews due to the long development time I believe so many of the earlier reviews are probably not as valid anymore since the game is now out and there's been several added features, even the release 1.0 version added some new things.
Hopefully the game is ready for release and the author didn't push it out of early access before it slipped into full negative ratings.
(The "~" neutral rating isn't much of a issue - to me at least - but seeing a game with a red thumbs down you would likely think it's bad in some way although Steam reviews are usually not very reliable though the rating can be important for sales.)
(Not the best comparison but for example with Metal Gear V: Phantom Pain the numerous reviews all saying "10/10 A Hideo Kojima game" pushing the game forever into the overwhelmingly positive rating, I don't think deleted reviews remove the negative vote either so some indie games probably got a lot of issues with the first couple of reviewers trolling and thus destroying the rating of the game moments after release or even before release if it was in early-access though of course there are numerous games on Steam that are pretty bad too but it's probably best to wait until there's more than a handful of reviews of the full version before completely trusting the rating the game has or how to say.)
EDIT: Maybe the ratings icon shouldn't appear until there is a set number of reviews although I'm unsure if early-access reviews should count towards it or not.
(Hard to decide I suppose, for some of the more abandonware type of games now out it is helpful to in advance know if the developer is just trying to do a quick money grab or how to say though the new refund policy is likely helping out a lot too.)
EDIT: And Valve probably couldn't (Or wouldn't be interested in.) constantly monitoring and checking the quality and validity of all reviews either, would probably take a large team of people to try and monitor that.
(Enforcing a character limit on reviews won't work either as people would just spam text until it's accepted.)
Then again just checking the reviews before deciding about purchasing a game and filtering them by most helpful and similar and only using that to judge would of course be one possibility.
(Checking the various posts on the community forum page and maybe user made gameplay videos can work too but would also take some time.)

In theory - ideally - a review for an early access build should not be THAT representative for the final version of the game. It's a complex discussion though, because we're talking about way to many factors that can decide the ratings: gameplay, technical aspects, performance, innovation, perspectives/potential etc.
In practice, we haven't seen miracles happening. A game with "Mixed" reviews in early access won't probably climb that much to reach the "Very Positive" status. And even if this happens, we're talking about pretty much isolated/rare cases.
