I remember looking at that campaign, but it was rather lame with just words and zero content or at least artwork or some design documents shown so I naturally didn't participate. They did deliver.. something.. But, perhaps it would have been better if it went tits up Smile

The letter from the lawers is obviously scare tactics in an attempt to end the battle before it begins, but if The Escapist is confident their sources will hold up in court they'll never apologize.

The editor's response last week (after Roberts sent his letter/email) said that they ran the original article past their legal department before the initial publication, so I doubt they will back down now. They probably knew legal threats were quite likely.

The Escapist have refused to back down and will neither apologise for the articles nor withdraw them.

John Keefer wrote:
The Escapist, notwithstanding Cloud Imperium Games' notice and posting, stands by its coverage of Star Citizen and intends to continue to investigate the developing story. Since publishing our original stories, we have been contacted by, and are currently interviewing, additional sources corroborating a variety of the reported allegations. Additionally, if Mr. Roberts' offer for The Escapist to "meet the developers making the game and see how we're building one of the most ambitious PC games first hand" remains open, we take the opportunity to accept such invitation so as to hopefully provide the public with sufficient information and opportunity to vet such sources' allegations and claims for themselves. We have also communicated the foregoing directly to Cloud Imperium Games.

I guess it all gets serious now. I *want* CIG to show the world that everything is great, that the game is on track, that feature creep and gross over-monetisation without accountability will stop, that tangible progress is being made. I want this game to come out.

The Escapist is owned by Defy Media (who also own Game Trailers and GameFront, amongst numerous other sites). They, in turn, have a number of heavy weight investors, including ZelnickMedia, the owner of which, Strauss Zelnick, is also the CEO and chairmain of the board of Take-Two Interactive (which ZelnickMedia also has a stake in, not surprisingly). So it's safe to say that however big a fish Roberts likes to think he is, in reality The Escapist can probably rally a team of lawyers that would squash him like a bug.

Finally, a press company that does what the press should be doing the whole time: exposing scandalous companies and tactics to the public.

Now they will hopefully be forced to fully disclose their progress in the process of defending themselves and we will see how much was bs and how much was true.

Nice info, thx! A big LOL is on order here.

Mr. Robert's ego will be the end of him, I tell you... Because this seems to be all about an "how can a squishy journalist can do so much harm to/dare to pick on 90 MIL CLOUD IMPERIUM GAMES?!" attitude.

This guy's ego oozes through everything he says or does. Even the damn names he picked for his business manifest this: Cloud Imperium & Roberts Space Industries...

This is the biggest reason for concern from CIG's perspective, and you're right to highlight it: "Since publishing our original stories, we have been contacted by, and are currently interviewing, additional sources corroborating a variety of the reported allegations.".

More sources. I hope this goes to court and that the outcome is definite. Win Escapist or Win CIG. Worst scenario is if it stays in court as an ongoing things because both parties have access to a lot of money, and that it just fizzles out into a settlement of some sort. It'll depend on the sources, if their info adds up with what other sources new and old, say about it. I don't know if it is much help interviewing current employees, because depending on their situation, they might be afraid of losing their source of income.

In order to prove that things are in order with the spending and finances, CIG will be required to fully surrender the books for review. It probably won't become public knowledge though, but the result of the case will provide hints at least

Not hiring someone because of race is also highly illegal.

Never judge someone before all the facts are on the table though, got to at least hear both sides out first.

Another victim in this is the video game, I think. Now the main people developing the game will be distracted by an ongoing investigation, and I'm sure backers and most importantly future backers will be more hesitant than ever.

It is a while ago, but I got a refund; hence I had pledged less than 100 bucks though, but their customer support treated me very well. I just sent an email to their support.

BE NICE in your request. Their customer support are just regular employees with no direct connection to the video game development. I read that being angry does not help you at all.

The request registration was quick, but the actual refund of money took them a few weeks simply because they had a lot of work to do, they were understaffed and there was a line. Essentially, first come first serve to be answered by CS.

Roberts has a lot of money. I'm not saying he'll spend only his own money on an eventual case, but yeah.

Both the parents of The Escapist and CIG has money to support a long war if need be.

It won't go to court. Roberts was just trying the usual bully scare tactic of legal threats. Unfortunately for him, he didn't really do his homework on who he was threatening. Expect to see an announcement from CIG that backs away from the legal threats and paints themselves as the misunderstood victim whose words were completely taken out of context. I would guess they will be keen to throw open their doors to the media (perhaps a rival outlet rather than The Escapist) to show how above-board everything is, how everyone that works there is super happy, and what a fantastic and productive work environment it is. Oh, and how they are totally making progress on the game.

Actually, if what the Escapist's sources claimed is true, having Chris Roberts have his hands full with an investigation/court case, and having to delegate work to the leads, would be beneficial for the game.

Haha, well, not sure the initial backers agree as the main catalyst for the project even getting off the ground was Chris Roberts. But yeah, if it is true that he is more disruptive than helping, I can see how removing him could lower some shoulders.

According to their jobs page CIG are looking to add around 60 new employees. They have 260 now. Not an indicator of a company nearly without funds, unless it is all a ruse.

What I wonder is, why was The Escapist contacted by these disgruntled employees? Why that site and that journalist specifically? They used to be popular, but not so much now. There are a lot bigger online publications with even bigger reach.

I would say a company hiring that many people for a game that is supposed to be well into development (isnt it supposed to be finished now by original estimates?) is kind of alarming in and of itself

Now that would be good news, if they also fire the people who didn't deliver I can imagine there are a few disgruntled (ex-)employees.

2014 was the date for the project outlined on Kickstarter. Since then its grown a lot in scope, but mainly in complexity. I don't think they've set a new date for the 'final' game.

Like the entire source of the escapist article is from a site called glassdoor.com, which uses anonymous information. It would be of no surprise if that prime sperglord Derek Smart fabricated all of the information about CIG in there and goaded Escapist into using it just to generate controversy out of thin air, and help strengthen his claims.

Right. So The Escapist lied about everything and then they stood up to legal threats and made even more lies about more sources corroborating what they said, all on the opinion of a washed up has-been?

Damn that koolaid must be delicious.

I think those 60 ARE there mainly to replace other employees. One of the main things a struggling company does, is get rid of the "fat" which means replacing more expensive employees with cheaper ones OR getting rid of the less productive employees and finding better replacements.

Years ago I worked for a famous Dutch architectural company as system administrator.
I can tell you that they attracted dumbshits as flies.
Best example a guy with an internship, he started with AutoCAD.
He didn't know the program drew a line, made print, drew another line, made print.
When lunchtime arrived there was like half of a cm, 1/5 of an inch of prints lying on his desk.
He was sent away next day.

I can imagine that CIG attracted a lot of people without required talents that just wanted to fill their pockets.
They should have cleaned up shop much sooner though.

http://www.dereksmart.org/2015/10/star-citizen-the-endgame/

The next instalment of the Smart rants Laughing All doom and gloom and prophecies, as usual, 99% of it can just ignored as more posturing .. but the last bit;

Quote:
  • They are going to parade all the A-List actors – all of whom cost a ton of money – for SQ42. This despite the fact that that stand-alone game is reported to be almost fifteen months away.
  • They are going to show the opening cut-scene sequence for SQ42 with Gary Oldman giving his speech, someone flying and landing, NPCs waving etc.
  • They are going to show Star Marine. Again. It’s still a mess – and nowhere ready for production release. Reports tell me that if it gets released before year end, it would be a miracle.
  • They are going to show multi-crew. Again. Problem now is that, as of the last report I got, it doesn’t run smoothly at all. And so they are now running the demo on super computers with 16 cores, loads of memory etc. Again, not production release ready.

Is interesting. There's also a few alludes to "more sources" and "people have contacted" me, whether you believe those or not.
