The video made such a bad impression that the company wrote a response about it.
Quote: | So to answer a few questions...
First of all THANK YOU. It is gratifying to hear that our core backers like the progress. General internet rumbling can be a bit discouraging.
We wanted to (a) keep the demo short and (b) really try to nail the concerns you guys had on look and feel. For that reason there is a lot of depth that you won't see until the playable around the end of the month.
We were playing with the Shadowbeast look and animations right up o just before ship so yes, this is an iteration, not a necessarily a final look. I think the way he fades between shadow-look and in-light look is pretty cool. Again you couldn't see much of that in the video but you will when you get to play around with him.
My primary job in all this was as the "Shadowbeast wrangler" aka AI designer/implementer so let me clarify a couple of points.
None of this was "scripted" in the sense that all of the Shadowbeast's actions were based on real AI. Again, you didn't really get to see him do his stuff fully, but his attacking the theif's torch was because he recognized a light source in the environment and responded to it. You also didn't get to see much of it but he hammers on the closed door and that, too, is dynamic recognition of something in the environment to react to.
Finally, if we could have spent more time in the big room you would have seen that he responds to light levels and will stop chasing you long enough to put out torches you light.
This is all the beginnings of that context aware AI we promised you and its working pretty well so far. We still have a lot of work to do though to make it easy for our level designers to use and to fill out responses.
Last comment, the voice over is not necessarily what will be in game at all. We wanted the video to be clear as to what was happening to people who knew nothing about UU and thought the VO was the quickest and most dramatic way to do it. |

The video looked like a student project put together in a week, one can only hope they do the miracle . Not sure we need the random Laracroftian blabbering of the protagonist either, but oh well it's nextgen.

It looks like a tech demo from 15 years ago.

Well I've been reading they are focussing on interactivity in the game engjnr more than anything else so that's what I'm hoping for. Realistic fire and burning mechanics, traps with moving parts that can be jmed etc. Proper physics that can be used to progress. I'm tired of console graphics and press x for scripted action over gameplay so any change additions are welcome.
Game seems pretty ambitious and like we will be waiting for a long time though looking at the vid.

Not sure i dig the art style. I get it that the original was "cartooney" and colorful, but that's the way games looked at the time because it really was the only graphics that made sense with the tech which was possible.
I would prefer more realistic graphics i have to say, e.g like Arx Fatalis, but more modern.
Overall i think it looks rather sloppy even compared to many mods (with user created graphics).

I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this one. Unity + stylized art is not how I imagined a next-gen Ultima Underworld.
I'll tell you this right now, they better not use this kind of art and this UA engine for SS3.

That looks so bad and cheap.
They should just throw out a mobile game of this. Looks they target that audience.

The reason I'm worried is that they seem proud of those shots.
It's like they've been living in a cave since they were part of Looking Glass.
What is it about all these old guys coming back to the industry...

Haha it is baffling indeed
I get that they want to be transparent (no fear of a downgrade here ), but how can someone release those pics without realizing their off-putting-ness is beyond me.
I'm far from being a graphics whore, however when it comes to the involvement factor in 3D environments, something is needed...a texture at least, or a minimum amount of polish to give a decent impression. We shall see I guess, if the gameplay goes hand in hand with the presentation.

..this is one of the reasons i no longer take kickstarter games seriously and why i havent funded any more KS games. This looks so half-assed its not even funny, they're just taking advantage of old fans as a quick cash-grab..
a small team of skyrim modders would be able to come up with something which would be a far more worthy successor than this.

skyrim looks much better than this. this looks like a bad world of warcraft, the design is far more cartoonish than skyrim..That big statue in the lava looked like a huge platstic figure.
I even doubt this will have the level of interactivity as the old UUW games or even be as complex as an RPG.

Each time they shown something its improved quite a lot, i dont think it's a complete failure yet. Skelly model and animations were balls, can be easily be fixed though. These guys gave us some of the best games ever made, i still have faith.

Looks terrible, but if the gameplay is there, I can deal with morrowind era animations and graphics.

Unity engine I guess, wonder why we never hear much of anything about Unigine come to think of it, they had some pretty impressive demos of their newest engine a while back.
(UE4 could have worked fairly well for a dungeon crawler too, less engine level bugs too I guess going by the still pretty long list of known issues with the current Unity 5.3.x version.)
(UE4 for System Shock 3? We've seen fan-made creations of bits of System Shock 2 in that already, or if it was CryEngine.)
