This package allows you to preorder Squadron 42, bundled with Star Citizen, at its all-time lowest price. This time-limited offer will end in 2016 when Squadron 42 becomes an item of its own.
Also includes everything you need to play Arena Commander today.
Preorder. Not pledge, not donation, actual preorder. You now PURCHASE packages and PURCHASE ships, which means they've stopped hiding behind the non-legally actionable "this is a pledge/donation and you get a REWARD, not a PURCHASE" nonsense into something that grants consumer rights and protections. Good. Very good.
They've also started the confirmation of game separation now too. Existing owners get Star Citizen and Squadron 42, but the games split and become their own separate entities next year... this makes me even more convinced that they're going to distance themselves from the initial plan and design of SQ42 being the "intro" to Star Citizen. We may well end up with a male-only protagonist now afterall, self-contained "story" like Wing Commander, rather than a "you do this to earn citizenship" angle.

When they remove Pledge in the URL we'll talk about it.
What's more important is that the Idris Frigate is the player's FIRST station. Meaning we have to leave Mitra's character behind? She is getting the Gary Oldman high res character treatment. That's bs. #refusetobuy
Take the role of a rookie UEE Navy combat pilot in a cinematic single-player epic adventure set in the Star Citizen universe.
So I guess they have scrapped the "citizenship" idea. That's a goddamned shame.. it was one of the more enticing aspects of the whole thing. Creating a character, playing through a huge story to "earn" your citizenship and jumping in online with that same character. Also, individual press videos have been released now;

So what are peoples thoughts on buying this?
I've been very skeptical until the press video today and it seems like the right time to buy it.
Chris roberts....good old Chris Roberts! Nice spaceship he created for 1000$ just beautiful.
Nevertheless no fps module ofc and no alpha with a few planets and trading and so on. Should've started at the end of 2015 now its end of 2016 or 2017....
In the initial campaign they set aside a million dollars for bringing in well-known actors. They've probably expanded that, but man, they brought in 500k from the stream thing. The weekdays prior you can see they average around 50k.

as someone who pledged when the KS started, i will echo everyone's sentiment
I'm surprised people thought any of that looked good.
The gameplay had very obvious cuts where things didn't work and they were trying to pass it off as a seamless experience between flight/fps etc. It was very obviously not being played live, they took a page right out of Ubisoft's book there.
Their news was essentially scrapping the fps module because they are rolling it into "alpha 2.0" but with no evidence that any of it even works yet I don't know why people wouldn't be super skeptical about that.
The Squadron 42 stuff just looked LOL I have no words for that. I understand the kool aid is very persuasive but objectively that all looked like shit, for 9 million or 90 million
@10000-1
Euhm... I think you aren't echo'ing everyone's sentiment Unless you meant the RSI/CIG echo box (forums).
@Bart
I'd say wait it out, you still have time which means you can look how it is going and decide closer to launch date. What we have now is simply not worth getting.
Been a backer since KS, was quite confident back then... now nope. I'm fairly certain we are getting a watered down version of the idea they had in the first months due to the increased scope and mismanagement. This time there is no publisher to blame for that.
Morph i still believe the majority of backers dont have any "issues"

Sure there are lots of people too that just don't give a shit, that the money they invested means nothing to them. Though I really can't take such people serious as money is a valid factor in such a discussion, and those that just don't care about that don't know the weigh money gives to an argument

I'd imagine when I see how much they are invested in it. The backers with a lower amount of money into it 'surprisingly' are a lot more cynical.
And let's be a bit more rational: what is new or improved at this very moment that he should get it now? Most of the stuff that he has seen is not here yet (and no way of knowing when it will, judging by their track record). Reason why it would be better for him to wait, regardless of how we feel about the project.

Yes, but the ideas are good, and that this was happening on a ship that players will be able to operate cooperatively in the PU shows the shared assets is a reality.
What disappointed me the most is that they didn't at least polish these opening 10 minutes more knowing that they were showing it to the world as the first taste of the single player game, alpha or no alpha, first impressions do matter.
The non-syncing of dialogue, the -very- apparent clipping through walls (The guy carrying he crate in the hallway) was just lazy, when this was the part they chose to show live, couldn't at the very least these things have been fixed for the sake of the presentation? They excused themselves saying that the character tech wasn't done and implemented, that's fine, but it doesn't explain why they couldn't sync the audio/dialogue.
The ship interior was cool, the landing deck etc, sound fx and so forth though. They've got ships and that stuff down in my opinion. Making NPCs look alive and act natural is tough, and here they have a long way to go.
Player character movement was stiff and awkward, as others have pointed out here.
The 'tour' is supposed to be on rails, but they still let the player walk around freely. I think that is a mistake. If the only thing worth doing on the tour is follow the engineer, then just have the game follow him automatically as he shows you around and introduces you to some of the crew, as it will feel less awkward. Let the player turn his head around freely to look at stuff, but the walking from the deck to the briefing could be on rails, really.
One intro that did this was Skyrim, but you were tied up on a wagon with only the ability to look around, you still had time to take scenery in and listen to dialogue for those few minutes.
You think they didn't put in some extra effort to polish the intro, I think they hastily threw it together and they have no idea what they are doing in the long term.
They were 60 people entering 2014, so they haven't been what you can say a 'big' company for a long time. By February 2014 they according to this had 90 people involved. I keep reading on forums they've been in "full development" whatever that means since 2012 which is complete bs, really. Is full development whenever you have everyone involved working? Or is full development when you have 300 people working on it? Can you expect 60 people to produce as much assets and tech as 300 people per year?

I agree with you -and- I wish they'd focused more on making the tour play better for the presentation, because first impressions matter. What's apparent is that it hasn't been Ubisofted in any way. Its too rough-looking. Characters look like tech from 10 years back.
As someone who has pledged about a year and 6 months ago... no, it's not the right time to buy it until the moment it actually gets fucking released.
You have a fair point, I just thought since they are separating the game, perhaps now is the time to get the best value?
I'm expecting by next year we will have something playable to the point where I will buy it regardless of value.
"Value" wise, yes.. if the game exists and if it's ever coming out at all, getting a package *today* will give the best value because you'll get SQ42 and SC together. However, one can't help but scratch his chin at the amazing timing of this separation announcement... coming hot on the heels of all the brouhaha, all the sources confirming there are issues at the studio, the worries about running out of money and an impossibly impossible release schedule. What better way to convince people to buy in than announcing "if you don't buy it NOW, you won't get EVERYTHING as we're splitting them up!"?
The cynic in me sees that as a calculated announcement. The once-hopeful happy little child in me sees it as confirmation that both games are going to be so enormous, so expansive, as to warrant standalone products.
If you liked what you saw yesterday, buy in. It's $45 (welllll, actually it's $35, since all you need is a ship package and that grants you the beta access, SQ42 + Star Citizen) and, as long as the game exists and can/will be made, this represents the very best value out of all the existing packages.

Hmm, guess I was under the wrong assumption of the package still being available for a few months.
So far all they're saying is "This time-limited offer will end in 2016 when Squadron 42 becomes an item of its own." -- that could be January 1st 2016.. or it could be Q4-2016 when the first alpha quality non-interactive demo of Squadron 42 is released to backers/preorders. It's too vague to really know how long people have to preorder before the packages get split, thus furthering my cynical point about calculated announcements.

Thanks for the clarification
I heard it as available until they had a client (alpha,beta or whatever) of SQ42, but I can see I'm wrong now.
Can't count on them if they are that vague, so indeed value wise its worth it to do it now instead of waiting if he was satisfied what he saw and was going to buy it eventually.
