Sadly I think this is pretty much as good as it's going to get for "story" based open-ended space romps, for tighter and more scripted games we need the likes of Wing Commander and Squadron 42. For open-ended non-story titles, we have X and Elite. This one is seemingly in the middle, kind of like Freelancer.

Yeah, I know, but I expected at least a few different idea's. There are more things to think off in space, like a race, an escort, a 'quest' that's not only X -> Y -> X, find some parts in an area, discover an area and ask for information, etc..

Evochron Mercenary does it:

But in the end it's the same sandbox kind of a experience only with a couple of more different type of missions.

So did you get a legit streamer/press key, or is there a release of it floating around? I had a cursory look, but nothing turned up.

I can see why they seem to be handing out keys to pretty much anyone with a Youtube account, the buzz around the game does seem to be fairly muted somewhat surprisingly, given the relative dearth of such games and how good this one appears to be shaping up.

The final story mission in the 1st sector was quite nice - minor spoiler:

But, yeah, so far every mission was basically combat mission. Anyway, I wonder how long is the story, since there are 12 fucking star systems in the game so it seems it's quite long and based on what I've seen so far (I just entered the second space sector) it could get quite interesting... We'll see Smile

Pretty cool in that game is that you can also explore the planets. I tried it in this game but everything burned to pieces so I don't think it's possible Mad

It's possible but it's not easy as far as I remember. The atmospheric entry must be done within a certain angle and speed otherwise your spaceship will be destroyed.

So yeah, I though there are only 6 types of ships available. Then I moved to the next system I found we can buy fucking Dreadnaught! So Much Win Fucker costs almost 18mil. credits. Just to compare I receive around 20-30k for an average difficulty mission now Smile

Here he is:
 Spoiler:

What a fucking BEAST. 20 broadside ports, 16 (!!) turrets. My god! I wonder if there are even bigger ships available Very Happy

There are 21 ships in total as far as I know.

Dreadnaught is the biggest class. There should be a couple of minor variants, but I wouldn't expect anything significantly bigger. That will change if modders have their way, although it is uncertain how likely that is at this point. The devs have said they aren't officially supporting modding, but that they aren't going out of their way to impede it. Post-release they may also eventually provide more info on the file formats to help out a bit if needed. But give it time and I'm sure someone will manage to get a Super Star Destroyer in there.
