The character creation still feels very lackluster.

None of the faces, clothes or anything they let us choose looks good. They try to be funny, I get it, but it really isn't funny. It is very poor. I was hoping for improvement based on feedback. Characters mean a lot obviously to a party based RPG. Its easier to care about characters you created if they don't look like stinky doodoo.

Not only lacklustre, but bugged too. It's missing several customisation items as well as locking certain others to female only, not to mention you can no longer export your character either.

One broken shit show after another. Even the 360 controller support is fucked - the selected character simply skips animations while walking, but it's fine with kb/m. Some say it's working, though - no idea what the hell is going on. Just wanted to test it out, to see how and if it all works. Can't even imagine playing this type of game with a controller, that's for sure... When did gaming become so stressful?

This is a sad time for gaming.
Now one even has to fear, that upgraded versions of the main game are worse than the main game.
State of Decay YOSE was the first with that symptom i can think of. And the latest is now this. Fucking shit everywhere. Embarassed

Here's one example of the graphics not being worse, but detail being completely gone (I mentioned this a few hours ago but took a screen this time).

Old version - chalk drawings on the ramp where kids were playing. Gives the place more of a lived in feeling:
http://i.imgur.com/FYnPadz.jpg

New version - chalk drawings completely absent. Why? What's the point of removing them?

The lighting in the second pic looks way better though IMO, and doesn't have all those SSAO artifacts.

Sear, the dev, replied to my comparison post stating that the angles are identical .. it's just the "terrain angles" that have changed. When I pointed out that the models are indicative of the altered camera angle, he deleted his post.

Lol, yeah that is "sea" from the RPG Codex, aka Eric Schwarz, former writer at GameBanshee who got a shitkicker job at inXile during the beta phase. I had a few run-ins with him years ago on the Bioware forums, back in the prime DA Origins modding days. The guy is kind of a cunt.

All the textures had to be redone for PBR, and it's likely the base timber planks texture is used elsewhere. They probably just forgot to add in the chalk drawing for that particular instance (either directly or as a decal).

Also these two images here and here showcase the difference in visuals. Seems like DC has actually been toned down a lot... a substantial amount of clutter has been removed and the terrain altered. It looks clean but also slightly more stale for it.

What the hell? That's a DOWNgrade.

I'm so glad I played the original PC release.

It's not a downgrade, it's a retexture - all the clutter is still there (they even added some extra like the burning barrels). If you step back a few feet from your screen, I can see why they changed it - the original was too splodgy - I actually prefer the new one better - it has a more atmospheric look to it and Wasteland 2 was missing that.

I think it's more because the original had a chalk-like substance around it in the circle. When they replaced it with steel plating, it made less sense for the chalk marks to remain. I mean, surely the kids might draw on the steel as well so immaculate steel next to wooden planks that got drawn on might look odd.

Personally, I think the improved looks feel more professional. The original game felt flaky in many areas - the above-linked screenshot of the highway included.

Looks like the dome was originally intended to be concrete to me. I prefer the look of the steel dome, but I'm not sure the chalk drawings are related either way.

Looking at it again, I can recognize it as concrete .... if you make the texture 5x too big Laughing . See, the old game was full of bad texturing and texture scaling - I don't mind them fixing some of it.

Yeah it was just some stock texture they slapped on there. There was a lot of that sort of thing in the original, extremely variable quality even within a single level/area. Not surprising really given that they outsourced a lot of asset production to amateurs/modders.

The original is very playable now, it just has some late game balance issues.

I'm really enjoying some of the harder combat in DC, the new perk/quirk system adds some extra substance to character development as well.

Aimed shots/perks etc should have been in the base game from the start.

I recall being happy when I played the original Wasteland II (with a better (though still annoying) camera) for 96hrs.

Personally, I can live with the worse camera for the improved combat and character development.

I hated the camera in the original and kind of got used to it being terrible, I guess it has given me enough tolerance for DC.

This is my feeling too.

The camera hotfix has improved it a bit, and I'm enjoying the new aspects of the DC.

I just opened Steam to be greeted with a 420MB update, so I gather they are patching a couple of issues besides the camera. There is a bug with custom portraits not showing up properly and a few other things, so they might be addressing those, although I don't see any official patch notes as yet beyond the notice of yesterday's camera hotfix.

Edit: Ah, as per lolozaur's suggestion, seems like it might be some of the backer reward stuff, novellas and so forth.

I played a bit and the camera is bad even on the TV and 3m away from screen.
The new UI though is nice and the controller (yeah I know...) based UI is very good. I like the new features and improvements so far.

Picked up a different sniper rifle than the one I started the game with. It looked different in the inventory, but when I equipped it, it looked identical to the starter rifle. What's the point of 3d visualisation of a game when stuff doesn't get properly represented in the game. Just a minor change would have been pleasing to see between two different looking items. Very boring. A big part of the game is picking up items. /quit game

Most weapons do have different models. Are you sure it wasn't a bug?

I can't be sure it wasn't a bug, but that's what happened to me regardless.

Full disclosure, I played 70 hours of this when it first came out (on hard, did not complete the game), but I can't remember how this rifle looked back then. I do remember the inventory illustration, but not whether the newbie rifle looked identical like it did in my game now. It was a considerably better rifle in terms of damage output, so I automatically assumed it'd show up differently when carried by a character. Ah well.
