Tried this some more. It's okay game considering it's made by small indie devteam. But it's too much grind for my taste.

So do Mercs at every bar have a different specialty or do they just pilot ships? Everyone I've come across just mentions that they pilot and you question if they are too old. lol

They all pilot fighter-class ships (gunships or the like). There are at least 6, each slightly better than the last, and it seems like in the end-game systems that they get a second levelled-up version with better stats. At that point the best one costs around 250,000 credits to hire. Once you have hired one, when outside the station use your scanner to get a close look at their ship.

ahh, ok. I have yet to hire one. I just assumed they joined your ship's crew as like a pilot or gunner officer. So I can also assume they can die in battle too?

No, anything to do with crew has been abstracted away (makes you wonder how those dreadnaughts work - they should require 100s or 1000s of people to operate). The mercs fly their own ship, which can be destroyed if they take too much damage. If that happens they will eject, and you'll have to re-hire them to get them back (or hire a different merc). You can change their firing priority just like a turret, so only fighters, only the targeted vessel, none, etc.

Flak turrets don't work on capital ships, so definitely set them to fighters only. Swarm/leech/shieldbuster turrets all fire missiles, so you probably want them to be either target or manual only to preserve ammo. Although I did manage to loot a type that isn't sold in stations, a Murath Badger turret. It only fires 1 missile at a time, but it has an infinite supply (and a massive range).

How do you set firing priorities?

Open the menu (ESC or Start button) and change to the Tactical tab/window.

isn't that the one sold by the mercenaries? fires every 40sec or so and deals massive damage
ooh pro tip:
GET IN THE MERCHANTS GUILD ASAP, costs 10k, and in the MERCENARIES guild costs 30k - just find their outposts in the current system and fly there
you'll do missions that increase the rep, but as I understood it doesn't count if you're not in the guild, where can I check my standing with the guilds? is it increased by rep gaining?

No, the one they sell is an AoE missile. Interesting idea, but I never bought one as half the time it would be too dangerous to use, don't want to risk collateral damage on allied/neutral vessels. It would probably be ok on a bigger ship with a lot of turret slots, but you can't afford to waste a slot on a turret you hardly ever use on the smaller ships.
StrEagle wrote: | GET IN THE MERCHANTS GUILD ASAP, costs 10k, and in the MERCENARIES guild costs 30k |
Besides some ships only available to them, the Merchant's Guild also offer much larger cargo extenders. The biggest one adds 32, which is very useful on some of the more shooty ships that have a tiny default cargo bay.
StrEagle wrote: | where can I check my standing with the guilds? is it increased by rep gaining? |
It should show up opposite the faction standings in the map window. It also shows up when you dock at a Guild station. Yes, you gain ranks by completing missions that grant rep increases. The Merchant Guild is pretty easy, as you can pick up missions that give their rep from any station. The Mercenaries Guild is much slower, as their missions seem to pretty much only come from their stations. They also tend to be more of a pain in the ass to do, like the god awful escort missions.

so I got a Korian Veridian Blaster from a drop, it's like a particle laser but with 100% damage on shields, where do I get more?
and how many lvls of equipment are there, 5-6?

Level 6 is the max. There are a couple of items like that blaster that are random loot. I just finished the final story mission and only ever got 2 unique loot drops. I think one was the same blaster you mentioned, and the other was the missile turret I mentioned earlier. Both were only level 4 though, so the grade 5/6 purchasable weapons were better.

How's your luck with commodity trading? So far I find the prices change too quickly to get any sort of trade route going. The 1 day = 1 min seems like a poor choice. I was hoping for a little more stability in commodities (a la Freelancer).

It was a 350k mission to escort the mercenary guild master. It started out in a junk field - cleared baddies out no problem. He then proceeded to fly into the the sun. He then turned around and flew into the nearest planet. Having had enough, he routed his dumb-ass to the junk field in which he started at. What's more, the supposed station he was supposed to be escorted to didn't even exist in the system.
It felt like a giant Monty Python skit. They should have just made the escort missions to where the NPC follows you (like the mercenary), and put a big blockade on the destination port like they do with the "Deliver Item Here" missions. It's obvious they didn't test them at all, as none of them path correctly (tried 5 or so).
Side note, be careful when taking corners around a planet while in warp speed - I took a corner too sharply and promptly crashed into a tiny moon. 45 minutes of progress (and millions of credits) lost.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.
