My son was working at a grocery store.
Minimum wage, bust your ass job. He was one of the few someone could call out sick, he would come in for them..even for other areas he didnt work in to cover for them. He'd stay late, come in early. Did everything they asked and was pretty much a model employee for what you can expect for 5.25 and hour.

His only 'fault' was when working the deli, at closing they throw away all the unsold food in the dumpster. Its still fine, they just cant sell it the next day. Every now and then he would take some chicken fingers and a side of fries and put them to the side to eat on the way home..Now remember this is shit he was literally on the way to the dumpster to toss, he couldn't even PAY for it if he wanted to, as at closing its deemed 'unsellable'.

His boss comes up to him yesterday and tells him "You have 2 choices, quit...or we investigate and press criminal charges for theft of product. I have seen you at least 1/2 a dozen times over the last 4 months take food thats to be tossed and set aside a bit to eat".
He fucking threatened to call the cops on my son for eating 3 chicken fingers that was on the way to the dumpster.

This guy has stood BESIDE the dumpster before to make sure employees toss the food, and that no homeless people get it. He will scare them with the "you are trespassing on our property get away from the dumpster". Not like they linger about, every now and then one will ask the people throwing it away "can I have that bag of fries"..thats it.

He also points out my son got fussed at twice for having bottled water with him behind the counter..employees arent allowed to drink anything while working. they have to goto the breakroom and take a break, or walk ALL the way to the back to the water fountain, which they usually cant do, because they get fussed at if its busy and they leave.

Just wanted to vent, son doesnt want the job back..and I dont want him going to work for an asshole like that...
Just how does someone in a crappy middle 'management' position at a grocery store become that much of a dick.

i can understand your rage. but the throwing away stuff is forced by the law. its stupid as fuck. we got a few cases in the last years in the media here: woman worked in a store, and every now and then took a piece of food with her to eat it instead of throwing it away with the other stuff -> termination of her working relationship got called legal from a few different courts (its even not legal to give it away for free to homeless people). stupid as fuck. one woman got even fired because she checked in a bottle receipt someone lost and she found at the end of the day in a store (think it was about 50cents)

about the drinking stuff? yeah sucks, asshole boss. ofc you shouldnt drink or whatever in front of the costumers, but if nobody is waiting why the fuck not drinking? a friend of mine works regulary on the christmas market here, ofc she isnt allowed to drink for free (its mulled wine and feuerzangen punch) there. but their boss doesnt even give them free hot chocolate/tea or even water (can be fucking hot or cold in those booths. they have water there, but they have to pay for it and are not allowed to bring their own bottles... thats the right way to thread people who sell your shit...

I can understand him not wanting strangers or homeless people coming to ask for food thats being thrown away, but why not let your own employees take a few things?
Are they worried that if a person gets sick (due to food being past sell by date , like a day or two past it is gonna hurt anyone Rolling Eyes ) and suing them for damages? Scratch Head

@DXWarlock: In the end it boils down to this, you take something that isn't yours, even if it gets tossed out.
How about asking your boss 1st if he/she is okay with it?

That rule is usually enforced when you have weak people ruling over you. If you have more accomplished persons somehow it is never a problem. At least that has been my experience at the different work places.

It is sad that people prefer to toss things rather than giving it away, there are organizations enough that would help you with these things so it wouldn't cost you time or money.

Anywho, I'm happy your son is away from a shitty place like that. Hope he finds something better. Smile

No talk/warning whatsoever, just "get fired or we will call the cops" out of the blue? The law is the law but fuck that guy then
Maybe have your kid show up there when he gets a bigger and better job just to laugh in the face of that asshole, or buy a ton of chicken fingers and offer them to the guy Laughing

No i agree with what you guys are saying. HE should have asked first if they minded.

More pissed he didnt get a write up, or a warning, or anything, and the guy acting like he just caught a shoplifter with a coat full of prime steaks.
I wasnt there, but my son said he put it in a way of "You can quit and leave now (as in RIGHT now, dont even clock out), OR we call the cops and they review it..and we press charges".

I admit he probably was breaking some store policy with it. But it was maybe once a month.
A warning, or write-up or something seems more appropriate. Not making a 18yo feel like hes about to go to jail if he doesn't leave the store ASAP for eating some expired chicken fingers sitting by the back door Razz

There was a big case in Poland a couple of years back - a guy owning a bakery was giving leftover bread to homeless and some kind of a charity diner. Our IRS said it should've been kept in records and taxed - he had to pay 250k zł (fine + tax) which made the bakery go bankrupt. So he should have thrown it away or pay the tax.

In case of your son it could be similar - that the owner would have to pay for that just because of stupid laws.

Worked in a supermarket a few years ago, and I did noticed the exact same idiotic rule. I always asked them why not give it away to charity or something like that and I never got a proper answer. After hearing the tax related thing, it makes some sense from the retailer's point of view but then it just goes to show you how moronic some government branches are.

The drinking part however was never an issue at my place, I even had a coffee mug under the counter along with a 0.5l bottle of water and it was never an issue. Not sure how it is today though. There were other issues, just as shitty, with the management was treating people so I ditched that place and I'm glad I did as I found a much better job at an IT firm afterwards.

And that manager sounds like a real dick head, so good fucking riddance I say! Sadly, those type of cretins are not exclusive to those type of work places.

Best of luck to you son, I'm sure your he'll will do better!

@DXWarlock: Would like to add that boss is a dirtbag. He should receive some official warning about power abuse or even get fired.
Your son should have gotten a reprimand the 1st time it got noticed he broke a company rule/policy.

Thats how I see it, not let it build up for months while they both know he knows about it (why my son thought it was ok..he didnt say anything for months). Then spring it on him mid shift a week after the last time it happened and tell him "GTFO now or I call the cops".
Son just told me that he said "If I see you in the parking lot, I'll call in a loitering charge, or trespassing and I dont want you on my (yes he said my..not the) property.

Hes just a douche, Granted my sons should have got in trouble if it wasn't allowed. But to make him feel like shit, like he just walked out of a jewelry store with a diamond ring was going overboard.

Think it was more of a empty, cheat beating threat than him actually doing it if he came back.

Retail bosses are the worst. Most are on a power trip and they have a lot more work to actually do but don't get much extra £££ for it.

He's probably sour because he's going nowhere in life.
