Size is not the same as quality. Uncompressed DVD might be larger but a compressed blu ray is significantly higher quality.
And this thread was started back when HD was pretty new, therefore anything considered HD is considered high quality over here.
Also, most of the time if a movie is released in 720p it tends to get posted here since it gets released sooner, but 1080p isn't mentioned since it follows closely after.
I hope I have discouraged you from posting completely pointless comments in the future.

It's going to get even better too, with the advent of H.265. Great quality and even greater filesize.

For movies 10 bit encodings with h.264 never catched on did it? Because anime releases show it reduces filesize *and* increases quality.

That would be a valid counter argument, if I meant to compare to actual DVD quality. I just don't bother with 720p at all and usually go for a bluray remux version actually. Then im talking 20 to 30 GiB, not 4. Obviously the quality/size factor gets worse and worse and not everyone needs to care, but I still giggled at this topic title.

I do too, mostly for the lossless 24-bit audio.

Then u could just piss off the High Quality (HD) thread if it aint High Quality enough for ya.
720p= High Quality. I got like over 500 movies on my NAS, do you really think I'm gonna put up 30GB per movie on it? That would be retarded. So for purpose of keeping movies on storage 720p is the best in High Quality and size.

10bit mostly helps with banding and banding is far more prevalent in anime rather than live action. So it wouldn't help as much.

720p/1080p in H.264 is the minimal for that IMO.
Just defends on your own definition of high quality tbh. For someone that's been watching 576p for years thinks that 720p is high quality already. Yet those that have been watching 1080p or higher already for years think that's low quality..

That on the other hand, I dont hear, probably. I have somewhat good equipment, but Im just unable to discern much when it comes to encodings. In my very few experiments I couldn't even tell 128 bit mp3 from its original ...
| snakedtx wrote: | | Then u could just piss off the High Quality (HD) thread if it aint High Quality enough for ya. |
I am... I already said in the first post, that I would. You dont need to be so defensive
| sausje wrote: | | Just defends on your own definition of high quality tbh. |
Pretty much entirely as far as I am concerned. It depends on eyesight, equipment, seating distance wether you can even notice the difference between good and bad encodings or resolution. Also, the visual difference between a good 12 GiB transcode and 24 GiB remux is tiny compared to the size difference. So I do see why not everyone will get the highest quality releases.
To me 720p is just blurry. Actually even 1080p is blurry, because I sit way too close to my TV
| consolitis wrote: | | 10bit mostly helps with banding and banding is far more prevalent in anime rather than live action. So it wouldn't help as much. |
Because you wouldn't notice the defects it in real footage, because it's usually to "complicated/complex", compared to often clean gradients in anime?
That makes sense. Thanks
But movie encodings often seem to target toasters. Whereas the best anime releases dont care about that at all and adapt rather quickly to newest techniques, even if they only work in software. So I already watched 10bit h.265 encodings

Yeah I have no issues watching 720p in bed on my laptop (which has only 1600x900), but couldn't watch 720p on my main pc because it's a big screen and gets too blurry.
So for my laptop 720p is already high quality, while on my main pc that wouldn't be high quality as it can do much higher.

Hahah we laugh about it, but when last month Yify was shut down, deep in my heart I shed a tear and pressed F to pay respects. Very often I would download those releases to shove them inside my Samplastic4, and watch them super-comfy_mode in the bed . Hopefully someone virtuous enough will fill their compressed shoes!
