I've never had one before. The first joystick I ever had was given to me and it was crap. I bought one about 10 years later and it was also pretty crap. An expensive one was on the cards a few years ago but I never got around to getting it. I have no real experience with good ones or what I need.
I intend to use it for Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, ARMA3, IL2 and some actual flight sims
The division between these seems insane though. One is $30, one is $70, and then this one is over $500. Do these guys own this market?
The a10 model hotas for that large price is the best solid construction and good tracking joystick you will ever own period.
Sure they are pricey and maybe some of that price is about the company name etc but they do deliver quality products, I have the lowly T160000M joystick they make and for ED etc it is enough as I use keyboard for the thruster controlls.
I had saitek products they were not long lasting before the newer stuff came out but I would bet they are still quite less durable even today. The a10 hotas is made of nice cast heavy parts that as you know feel better in use.
This is order I would think about.
T160000M great joystick a winner for sure in its price area
X-55 rhino - great looking kit works well but personally I don't like how they still use the spring tension stuff, every saiek I have had the cup etc the spring sits on slipped around after much use and made the spring slip around, this may have been fixed with the latest version hotas though.
Warthog thrustmaster hotas - Nothing bad about it, it seems to be the go to stick for the real enthusiast.
All the above have good hall sensors for great accuracy.
Forgot about the T160000M, for 50€ thats the best thing you can get, know some very good pilots on Arma 3 that use it and talk fantastic things about it.

Yup its great I bought it to replace my saitek hotas x- whatever it was the blue one way back, it has nothing on this T160000M regarding build feel and response. Very good joystick and uses same sensors as the rest of the more expensive sticks from thrustmaster. It just of course misses the throttle quadrant.
Great choice, quite a quality joystick.
I got the poor man version: a T.Flight Hotas X and I'm quite happy with the build quality and performance for that price.
Takes getting used to, my time playing with joysticks was in the 90's with Wing commander and it took a while to get familiar with it xD But worth it!
playing wolfenstein in the age of cd drives? poor aussies
ehm try to get a thrustmaster hotas x cheap. great thing, rest is sooo expensive. have a logitech extreme whatever in the shelf, sadly the digital version with gameport -> useless now cause gameport -> usb adapters dont work
I've just watched a fair few tutorials on take offs/landings in DCS games. How hard is it to look around and flick switches/dials without TrackIR? Nobody really covers the controls and how it works otherwise. In ARMA you hold ALT to look around, is it like that? What about zooming in while you look around? Sounds complicated no matter how I try to imagine it.
I might start with the P-51
hmm, personally I could not "flight sim" without my trackir. It is that good. And most good when in russian jet with missiles that lock when you turn and look at a flying by enemy. You could use one of the many hat switches though on the throttle quadrant or stick to look about but its so much more natural with trackir or probably that other head stuff of today.
You can assign a button for that and it does work decent... but seeing that you have the funds to invest in your hobby. Get track ir, it's sooooooooooo nice to just be able to twitch your head
No not for those games.
Personally I use the Warthog with DCS World, Rise of Flight and Flight Sim. And a cheap Saitek X52 for ED and SC.
Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen are too 'arcadey' for the warthog stick.
Especially the triggers aren't meant to be pressed as often as you have to in those games.
By that I mean they've very resistant springs in them and you will wear your fingers out after a session of ED or SC with that stick.
The kinds of sims it's made for, you push the trigger a couple of times per sessions and no more. Because they're serious sims depicting actual combat scenarios.
So if you're planning on ED and SC then get some kind of Saitek Hotas. They're made for that style of gameplay and will be able to carry over on more serious sims.
I've only ever purchased one HOTAS - the Saitek X-52 - and it was the biggest hunk of shit I've ever had the misfortune of owning. Felt incredibly low-quality in construction, lacked accuracy even after DAYS of mucking about with the dead-zones, and my forearm would get incredibly tired of using it after a half hour or so (this is from someone that routinely games for 16 hr. increments, so my stamina is not the issue here ).
My advice, for however little it's worth, pay the extra and get a QUALITY stick.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Warthog does not have a stick twist, so you'll probably need to get rudders also.
I got x-55 HOTAS and so far I have been happy. I would not let kids play with it as few things in it do feel shoddy in deed. (there's a pinky 'lever' which feels like it could snap in half very easily)
For elite the x-55 is perfect as I can operate the whole game via the joystick.

Would there be anything particularly wrong with the ones I listed?
They won't be as sensitive, meaning you have better control of your aircraft with the crosswinds. They're a one size fits all, vs the crosswinds which are completely customizeable to your feet and how you like to sit.
The good thing about the saitek rudders is that they're a lot cheaper than the crosswind, as the crosswinds are hand made in limited quantities.
