Are you people referring to the CGI and production values of later episodes - that I haven't seen? Because ep1 was the usual TV garbage.

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

I thought the CGI was reasonable, but not great. It's still miles ahead of other SyFy CGI.

The money they spent on various sets, costumes, extras is visible from episode one however, it's pretty high production values. Especially when you compare it to something like Dark Matter where they try so hard to use 21st century buildings for sets, and even the few that were designed for sci-fi look pretty bad. Costumes aren't much better either, here you can see how much effort they spent in designing the space suits alone, they look like they're from a proper sci-fi movie.

I don't think people realize how much more difficult it is to make a sci-fi show compared to traditional shows taking place in modern, or even medieval times due to the need to manufacture sets, equipment and costumes, especially if you want variety in each episode. I appreciate it when it's done reasonably well, I don't remember a sci-fi show that did it properly in the last few years - most either try and fail like Dark Matter, or they mix sci-fi with real-world to avoid the costs (e.g. Continuum).

Dark Matter had more interesting characters, although it might be early to tell here. Other than that I'm enjoying it more than Dark Matter.

I've finally watched all 4 episodes available and surprisingly it was pretty entertaining compared to most other syfy shows. The story seems to be interesting enough so far.Visuals are actually nice(for a syfy tv series) , well, mostly. Very Happy

If you like it so much, chiv, just read the books - they are nothin special (very mediocre), but loads better than the series so far. Much more nuance to it.

I guess even Syfy can produce something good once in a blue moon.

But then again, most of Syfy shows start strong and go full derp after couple of episodes...so we will see.

We'll see if it is indeed excellent news or nor. Don't forget, it's syfy. They still might go full derp in the upcoming episodes Laughing

Ok I watched a couple more episodes and now I understand the comments regarding the CGI, costumes and production values.

For me these aspects really didn't come together in the first episode. But from the second it's very apparent the show has a nice budget, at times it's movie-like even.

Also the plot started going somewhere so yeah I'm now interested in the series. I'll watch ep4 & 5 tomorrow.

I like how they tell the story and the effects are very good for a Syfy show IMO. They sem to invest in the characters, instead of going for pure action. Between this and Dark Matter, I like both, I'd choose this one any day.

I agree, plus there were some cringeworthy acting moments. Still enjoying the show though, just felt like a step down from previous episodes.

I think they made all characters too edgy. There was so much more substance to them in the books - even though the books are shallow as fuck for a serious sci-fi.

What I really find surprising, is the good quality of the cinematography (the space action in the fourth episode for example was damn nice), which is practically the opposite of what one would expect from Syfy. Very Happy (About time really, being stuck in the mid 90s was making them look like a laughing stock!)

Unfortunately I agree about the characters. Personally I'm finding them rather unlikable (especially Steven Strait Crying or Very sad Laughing ), with the exception of hipster Jane who's more interesting than the others since he has some charisma. So far I'm finding it 'watchable' (not bad, not particularly good either), hope at least it doesn't get worse^^
