This usually happens if the kitten has been taken away from it's mother too early. They need to be with their mother for at least 12 weeks, if taken before that, they will not be able to mature properly (eg. the mother will not educate them that they should stop).
This can have consequences even further down in life, cats who are taken from their parents too early have a tendency to be less self-reliant, and will be a bit more dependent (and restless/worried).
If you want the kitten to be, at least a bit, more self-secure, take a fluffy piece of cloth (eg. fleese) wrap it around a warm bottle (ie. bottle of warm water), and put a ticking clock underneath it (to simulate the mother's heartbeat).

its also a lot of bullshit because we've had it for about 2 months now and its only just started doing it in the last week. My other cat looks after it too so it's not lacking anything like that it's just weird. She purrs like mad and obviously enjoys doing it, its just a bit disgustin

It really isn't. I've been working (as a volountary) a lot with cats in my home town, and have had cats since I was very little (even aspired to be a vet for awhile). What I wrote is true, and anyone who knows something extra about cats will corroborate this data.

Might very well be this way because it feels insecure right now. This behavior very rarely/never occur among cats who haven't been separated from their mothers prematurely.

Did you know that cats purr when they're in extreme pain too? Or when they're extremely frightened? They do this to both try and calm themselves down, as well as to convey that they're comfortable.
It's good you have an adult cat that takes care of it. But it's the mother's responsibility to, at earlier development, teach it to stop "snuggle suck", to a kitten that does this, this behavior is to reminesce of it's comfort with it's mother doing childhood.
Grown up cats can behave similarly, eg. when they start trampling you (and purring) using their claws to "grasp" you (this can hurt a lot if you have no, or little clothes on), this behavior is also a way to reminesce, but it's not correlated with a premature extraction from the mother, nearly all cats behave this way.

Found a link which described it better than I did:
Quote: | Suckling and Kneading
If a young kitten is adopted before completing a full 12-week suckling period, it will often suckle its owner's skin or clothing in its mother's place and this behaviour is often accompanied by "kneading" with its paws (kittens knead at their mother's teats to increase the flow of milk). This can continue into your cat's adult years.
Should your cat decide to suckle you or your clothing simply say "no" but provide your cat with a safe toy or object of his own towards which he can direct this behaviour.
While it can be painful, remember that kneading is a sign of happiness. It you can't tolerate a little bit of kneading you could put a nice thick blanket in your lap and let your cat knead to his heart's content. |

Isn't exactly what I said, but it isn't contradictory either.

i'd call that a pretty contradictory point. And yea I know blah blah can occur with cats but all my life there's been at least 1 cat in the house. At 1 stage we had 5 big cats and 20 something kittens.
And cat's dont purr when in extreme pain. They might make noises but it aint a purr.

Again, you're mistaken Sublime.
Kneading isn't the same as suckling. Like I said, kneading is the process of "stepping & clawing", and that's not contradictory what I wrote:
Quote: | Grown up cats can behave similarly, eg. when they start trampling you (and purring) using their claws to "grasp" you (this can hurt a lot if you have no, or little clothes on), this behavior is also a way to reminesce, but it's not correlated with a premature extraction from the mother, nearly all cats behave this way. |
False again is the notion that cats do not purr when they're in extreme pain. They do.
Quote: | As the cat matures the meaning of the purr changes. Some cats purr to indicate contentment or pleasure, but badly frightened cats and severely ill cats also purr, and so do females while they are delivering their kittens. It is not uncommon for cats to purr when they are close to death. This final purring may indicate a state of anxiety or possibly euphoria, states that have also been described in terminally ill people. |

Well why were you mentioning kneading when I was talking about sucking?
and again... I doubt it's the same kind of purr. I'm sure the purr's are different. Maybe not to our ears but the vibrations, frequency, pitch or whatever it is; it wont be the same (to a cat).
If u ever accidently stand on a cat you'll notice it miaows then it'll do the 'purr-like' thing, but its definitely NOT the same as when you're stroking it.

I've seen cats with internal damages (one of them had been in a traffic accident), and they purr. Stepping on a cats tail/paw creates a surge of pain (and they "scream"), but that's not as extreme as eg. internal bleedings, open wounds, etcetera.
I talked about kneading to specify which behavior was "good", and which was "bad". The stepping, clawing, is normal - whereas the suckling isn't.
So, to be furthermore specific: "Pain-over-time generates purr from cat".

You're obviously retarded, fisk.
When cats purr, its a sign of relaxment.
When they shake their tail, its a sign of pain or uncomfort.

Ah, how perceptive of you, to spot retardation over an argument of cat behaviour. I wonder, if your skills were honed at kindergarden, where that line of reasoning is educated among your equal peers.
You must've attended the same school of reason and argument as PoorLeno.
Yes, cats can purr out of relaxment, I never counterargued that - but they also do the very same when they're in pain.
The next time you wish to reveal your inconsistencies, please do it in a manner that doesn't make you out to be what you accuse others of being.

this is just fisks substitute for the adrenaline missing in his life.
after all, friendly forums where people discuss everything peacefully are boring,
there is always need for a cockfag who tosses around arguments with hatred as a means of enlarging his e-penis to compensate for the shortcomings of his life outside the net.
hell, i thought injurious was annoying but right now he actually seemed like a decent guy in comparison.
