Fast boot in the advanced power saving settings I assume, keep the PC in a eh "near-death" state but don't shut it down entirely for quick bootup and resume, bit of a update over hibernation and sleep modes though those are also used if you haven't disabled them.

EDIT: Go to the power settings and fiddle a bit with the options until you get that shield icon (UAC) on how you want to change currently unavailable settings and it should take you to the screen where this can be toggled. Smile
(I believe it's a UEFI feature as well so for those using a MFT HDD from a older "legacy" OS install or disk format don't worry if you can't see this setting or if it's greyed out.)

the shutdown button is not a shutdown you are used to from older windows versions

you can deactivate it with powercfg /hibernate off

but make sure you also deactivate hibernate in the energy options (unter Erweiterte Energieeinstellungen ändern <-- sorry guys, dont know the english term) to prevent the notebook from using that hibernation mode automaticly while not plugged into the charger. if you deactivate it with the command above only it will crash when it trys to hibernate due to the energy saving settings

Did you check your power settings to see what the behaviour was when Hibernate or Sleep occurs when X happens? There are options there to change what it does based on what you do.

Mind you, when you go to START/POWER/SHUTDOWN does it actually just Sleep/Hibernate rather than truly shutdown OR when you hit the Power Button?

Yeah the Blue Light should be OFF to truly be off.

no tw1st is right, it changed. but i dont know if it changed with th2. i think it changes after u used wushowhide once (then you only can disable driver updates through that little tool)

Hmm..... this might be the case. I did use that tool once to try and prevent an nvidia driver from installing, but it was impossible for me to be quick enough.

Either way, the DDU tool JB suggested in another thread did the trick for me. It was just a frustrating experience.

Windows 10 wont upgrade from Win8.1.
It gets stuck at "choose to keep programs and file, or keep personal files, or delete all".
You choose options 1 or 2 and Windows 10 does somethings and after a while its back at this menu again.

Any ideas ?
Do you have to have all Win8.1 updates before installation ?
Do you need to run the Installer for Win10 as Admin ?

Thanks.

dunno about the updates, dont think so. base 8.1 should be enough. but ofc you need to run that as admin. would recommend you to just do a clean install, old keys are accepted from the setup with the th2 update (so no need to upgrade first to do a clean install)

How many people are using a localized Windows as opposed to English (obviously this excludes native brits, aussies and yanks)???

I've never used a localized OS in my life and when I'm asked to help someone with a localized OS it's a bitch to find certain settings since the translations can be totally bonkers at times (not to mention silly and annoying).

using localized windows since 3.1

but for us germans its normal to get localized stuff (though i prefer english in most of the games, movies, series whatever). in other countries its not so common. have used an english windows for a few months, way too much hassle to get used to that after 20+ years

Yeah, Germany is really suffering from foreign language anxiety. Watching Die Hard in Germany was a shockingly horrible experience (and lasted 10 minutes). Bruce Willis speaking german with a strange pervert voice.....

nah, his german voice (infact he has two or three voice actors dubbing him, but sounding very similar) is great. in case of die hard the problem is the translation

yes, the worst thing when i'm fixing someones PC and windows are in croatian. the words used are just so bad and pretty much make no sense, neither anyone from my generation ever uses them.

There's a third insider ring available now which keeps you on the current stable build of the OS but with early access to drivers and updates.

So do I need to run all my anti-tracking shit (shutup10, disablewintracking) again after this update?

All I did with the OS, is change all the privacy settings, run shutup10, and disablewintrackign to delete onedrive.

Should be good still, no?

Major OS updates (Going from one build to another.) generally tends to reset certain settings so it wouldn't hurt.
(Synchronization if you have it on can help partially but some things just won't sync.)

Minor OS updates (These cumulative monthly releases for example.) usually leaves settings in place however I have noticed Win10 likes to re-enable a few settings on it's own so I check weekly just in case.

Windows 10 also has a to me annoying tendency to auto-start apps after it has updated them and some like the settings app in particular tends to start up on it's own and run in the background although they don't really consume that much resources either but I try to keep things clean and how I want them and with apps doing things on their own that's a bit of a annoyance.
