Both Valve and Oculus have "infinite" internal R&D budgets.. if VR doesn't take off now, then it will never do (until real holograms are invented or something, of course).

I'm not even going to post mine - but apparently it told my 4GB 770 GTX to go fuck itself. It's just not leet enough for modern day "optimization" standards it seems. Very Happy Crying or Very sad

Dunno tbh - if they can sell gfx cards for hundreds of euro daily - I cant see any reason why they cant sell these.

Without the R&D happening right now there will be no technology to succeed in 5-10 years. So hopefully commercially it will do just enough for R&D to last 5-10 years.

Valve can spend an inifinite amount of money on it (they have been playing with machines costing an enormous amount of money for years now*) but hardware manufacturers, like HTC, will want to sell a minimum amount of units.

* Examples:
2010 interview:
Quote:
Gabe Newell: Oh internally yeah, we do gaze tracking. We've got this $50,000 system – it's a lab system for doing gaze tracking.

Doug Lombardi: That was way more valuable than we expected it to be, influencing work pretty much immediately.

2011 interview:
Quote:
Stating that the future of this tech is very "science-fictiony", Gabe Newell also revealed that Valve is currently talking to a company that implants EEG (electroencephalography) equipment into people's skulls, providing a comprehensive flow of raw information about the body.

"It's about a $60,000 operation right now but it gives you fantastic data that you could use. Eventually you're going to reach the point where it's a reasonable consumer option, as strange as that sounds, and very much reminds me of science fiction stories out of the nineteen-fifties about embedded phones and things like that. But at some point there are going to be sort of increasingly accurate, increasingly sophisticated sources of data about what's going on in your body and in your brain."

2011 presentation:
Quote:
Valve showed off facial recognition software and 10,000 dollar eye-tracking tech. They used the latter to play a short section of Portal 2, where the player uses their eyes to aim the cursor, and their hands to move around the environment. According to Ambinder, "The eye tracker is used to extract eye's X Y position. This data is updated at 60hz, before being fed back into the game engine."

The thing about expensive GFX cards is that you can play most games without them.

You're not likely to be able to play a VR game without VR technology.

That means developers will either have to:

A. Develop the game as both VR and non-VR = fewer resources dedicated to each branch - and a somewhat conflicted design.

B. Ignore those with or without VR technology = smaller audience = less profit.

In the end, it depends on the games.

If they manage to release that one killer game that's so much better with VR - maybe they'll break the barrier of entry for people.

I just don't see it happening.

Actually, you can play pretty much any game while you got your VR on. Virtual Desktop makes sure of that Smile big bloody screen infront of you Wink

VR might start small because of the price, but thats how it always start. 3d Cards accellerators came in small numbers too at first since most games did not require them.

All new technology starts expensive but the price drops rather fast.
Dvd came when most people still had VHS and people used pretty much the same words as you do back then regarding dvd Wink

Edit: Btw, have you tried VR?

When I said VR game - I meant game designed around VR.

VR in a non-VR game is most likely not a particularly great experience. Certainly not worth the asking price.

Well, if you ask me.

DVD was getting from the start the latest blockbuster pictures of Hollywood, VR won't be getting the equivalent in games.

I dont know if SLI still suffers from microstuttering so much but if it does it will be really bad for VR anyway, since it would render people sick.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Okay
After the Rift i am prepared for another buttfuck regarding the price.
Yet this time i would actually consider buying it at a price around 800€.
Have to sell some crap first for the money, but i think it would be worth it. Very Happy
