Loved Cloverfield, very interested in this so far.. but I hope they don't throw in some "oh no people are crazy and desperate" bullshit Zombie-type story. The banging on the door and the knife through the (wall?) gave me that crazy zombie people vibe. Plz no.

The consensus is it has nothing to do with Cloverfield but it's great.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."

Did he just ditch the storyline in Cloverfield, or is he working on something?

Well, yes.
Abrams said the next Cloverfield movie could connect Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane as he has come up with a nifty idea (he doesn't elaborate). For now they are set in two entirely different universes.
So for now it's ditched. In the future it might come back.

Have to say, the movie is pretty surprisingly good. Maybe because I went in with low expectations (hate found footage style movies so the original Cloverfield left a bad taste in me mouth) but the story had a pretty clever approach and overall, the second half of the movie really shines, imo.

There is but it's all "background noise". As in, if you go in not knowing about Cloverfield it doesn't change anything. Actually, I think it might even enhance your experience.
If the movie was called 10 WillSmith Lane then you would never guess there is a connection to Cloverfield. It really mostly comes down from the title. But a 3rd movie could indeed do a pretty clever proper link up of the two as the potential is definitely there.

I just spoiled myself. Fuck the people behind the marketing of this movie.... unbelievable. Cloverfield my ass.
Still gonna watch it though because it still seems to be a pretty good flick.

Just got back from the cinema. Not quite what I was expecting but great movie.
Spoiler: | An intense thought provoking experience with the majority of the budget probably spent on the last 15 minutes. Im assuming there is a sequel to Cloverfield on the way and judging by the ending this bridges the gap to Cloverfield 2 perhaps?
Interesting stuff for anyone who saw the movie

How much action is there in the movie? I only go to the big screen for action movies.

I haven't seen it, but read that...
Spoiler: |
Aliens show up at the end? And it takes place in the same universe as Cloverfield, meaning both sea monsters and space aliens exist in this universe?
Living in that universe must suck, if it's not a monster emerging from the depths, it's fucking aliens.

The two films do not take place in the same universe.

I love all this stuff with theories and speculation.
Here is the original script ending for those who have seen the movie before it got tied into Cloverfield franchise.
http://collider.com/10-cloverfield-lane-ending-original/
Spoiler: | In the original script, Michelle escapes the shelter and is chased through the farmhouse by Howard, who still wants to “protect” her. She blinds him with bathroom cleaner, he tells her about his tragic life (dead wife, missing daughter, treacherous Nate, etc.), and then she shoots him in the kneecap and runs away. He ends the movie alive, entreating Michelle to “be careful.” Later, after traveling down empty roads and finding no one around to help her, she crests a hill and sees the Chicago skyline, smoldering and destroyed. No explanation is given. We don’t even know what she will do next, only that she now knows that Howard, for all his oddity, was correct. The final line in the script is, “She slowly pulls down the mask on the hazmat suit before taking a breath.” |

Just saw it. Surprisingly enough, I didn't find myself feeling disappointed after the movie ended even though it does take place mostly in the bunker and has nothing to do with Cloverfield. I didn't even catch any references, I guess they decided to leave those for the ARG?
Anyway, the bunker part ends up being the main treat here, it's really good. Very tense, great acting, and it still has some surprises even if you've seen all the trailers. Then comes the ending, which does feel a bit tacked on, but not to the degree I was expecting. It's fine, nothing earth-shattering, but a fun way to end the movie. Just don't go see it with the mindset of "let's get through this boring bunker stuff to get to the crazy shit at the end".
I still wish they weren't so vague/deceptive in regards to the connection with Cloverfield, but oh well, marketing is marketing.

The only connections happened in the reshoots that added 2 things: 1) a "10 Cloverfield Lane" sign since they came up with the name in post 2) a shot of a letter that ties the movie to the ARG which ties it to the original ARG because both of the ARGs feature the Tagruato corporation. That's the only link really, the existence of "Tagruato" in both universes.
But otherwise they are different universes. Here is what the director has said:
Quote: | Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane do not exist in the same continuity correct?
Yes, they are not in the same timeline. |
Quote: | How aware are the characters of 10 Cloverfield Lane of the events that happened in Cloverfield?
They are on a separate timeline. They are not.. that timeline did not happen for these characters.
So it's like a parallel universe?
Um, sure, yeah. |
Abrams has said that for now the 2 movies should be considered as existing in an anthology of "Cloverfield" movies that do not share a plot connection, only thematic ones, but if they are lucky to make what he has come up with some connections will be made. (Mysterious portal opens from one universe to another for some AvP type of action?)
Quote: | “We began to internally realize that we could actually make this explicit,” Abrams told Vulture at the film’s premiere on Tuesday. “Instead of just feeling like, oh, it feels like another Cloverfield movie. What if there was a connection? And we started to realize that there was a bigger idea that, if we were lucky enough to pull it off, would connect the movies. On the one hand, it’s like a Twilight Zone. It’s an anthology of different stories. On the other hand, there’s a connective piece that we can hopefully pull off one day, but it wouldn’t be immediately.” |
