One super annoying thing. I didn't do any data management -> backup saves on my 3ds before I started fucking around with it...
I removed my old memory card, and then 'hacked it' via a new memory card. however I don't think I am going to be able to retrieve my saves from the old memory card after all?
are they saved in the sysNand (which I overwrote)? Booo. Ah well.
Another question - any good Zelda type AAA+ 9/10+ games on the 3ds? I am not into pokemon / turn based stuff, but Zelda Link Between Worlds was super awesome and I want MMORRRAAAAEEERRRR

There are none
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

Saves are stored in the memory card for eShop games and on the cards for retail games.
If you formatted your SYSNAND in between, even with the memory card removed, then there is no way for you to retrieve your save games.
If you didn't, you can just copy them back, they are in the Nintendo 3DS folder.
Just to update here, just downgraded and fully setup auto boot CFW (even getting/using OTP!) on an o3DS on 10.5, everything went super smooth, even both downgrades.
10.5 supports all latest methods to get homebrew running and downgrade, but 10.6 has browserhax fixed so you need Cubic Ninja or OoT3D to get your entry point there.
I finally managed to get a Gateway flashcart for my 3DS and it's incredible I've got a 32GB mSD for Gateway ROMs and a 32GB SD for CIA installs. Damned fine piece of kit with some truly incredible games too ... though I'd love to install one of the numerous CFWs and get rid of Gateway completely, I can't since my 3DS has never been "online" under OFW -- that means my browser version is 0 4.5.0-0E FW version and nothing I tried, not even the risky CIA-install-to-OFW of a web browser works.
No browserhax for Sabin
Ah well, I've got 4.5.0 for OFW and 10.3 for emuNAND so it's all good
I think you could have purchased a game to get yourself to a better version still below 10.6..
No cart contains a web browser update, and any carts after 9.2 actually - deliberately - corrupt the installed browser, forcing you to connect to eShop in order to download a fresh one -- and by staying on 4.5.0 I retain Gateway DS profile/blue card compatibility
Like I said.. no browser installed on my 3DS since it was never connected to the internet on OFW. It was bought for me still at 1.0.0-0E, never connected online, I then upgraded to 4.5.0-0E via a cart. Still no net, still no browser, still no entry method for *hax exploits The -xx part after the firmware denotes web browser version and region, if it's anything below version 20 then you can't use the exploit.. and seeing "0" means no browser installed.

What's the browser thing you mention? Never heard of that before.
You're running CFW via Browserhax, by your very own admission That's because your 3DS had a browser already installed.
Unless you've got Cubic Ninja (got a spare €150 lying around? ) or Ocarina of Time, the only way to install CFW is via a browser hack exploit. Hell, even Gateway use browser hacks in order to install/launch their own exploit if you don't have a system with a compatible mset profile for launching NDS version of the exploit. I bought a copy of Lego Chima to update my 3DS from 1.0.0 () to 4.5.0 and by staying on 4.5.0 I can continue to use the NDS mset entry, which I then launch to boot into 10.xx from emuNAND Still, it's not really all that bad. I've got 4.5 sysNAND with the NDS profile installed, so I'll never lose access to that, and I've got 10.xxx on emuNAND for whatever new games come out, a 32GB mSD for Gateway/3DS ROMs and a 32GB SD for CIAs. It works quite nicely.

Ah, what I meant was, I'd never heard of a 3DS with no browser, never knew that was a thing.
I'm pretty sure I saw it confirmed many many times that the OoT3D "Nintendo Select" version works just fine for that entry point, it's like $20. Surely cheaper than Gateway?
That would send you all the way 10.7, and then down to 9.2 easy.
Sounds like you're up and running now though, probably don't want to rock the boat.
Yeah, buying something else and then upgrading to downgrade is just a PITA I'm all set up now, so yeah, no point rocking the boat.. I was just lamenting over the "ease" of CFW compared to having to use Gateway.

Not only ease, but afaik gateway has a processor which makes your battery time lower, all in all. If CFW is just as good, then it's definitely the way to go if you ask me.
You can have gateway not drain any battery and still have your 3DS sleep in the home menu by unmounting the current game (just press SELECT to show game list / and press B).
I wasn't aware of flashcart 4.5.0 update that didn't have a browser.
I thought they only removed web browsers from cart since 9.2.0.
That being said you need 9.2.0 for menuhax which is the best (unless you downgrade back to 2.1.0 to get your OTP and pwn the boot-chain).
I ordered New 3DS White from a local retailer, should be here on monday. Already reading through all sorts of guides, tutorials, threads, reddit posts etc and at first it seemed overwhelming, but pretty straight forward (I used to toy a lot with such things on the PSP back when the scene was active). But reading so much now actually has the opposite effect, as I'm starting to confuse myself, lol.
New things keep popping up all the time and its kinda hard to follow them all, like the new PlaiSysUpdater that was released just today and already has 3 versions... As I do not want to risk downgrading N3DS to 2.1 right after I get it, I would try to setup SysNAND 9.2.0 and EmuNAND 10.7. Except for the faster boot and success rate, what else would I be missing?
Also any general tips you guys can give me from your experiences?
I had a pretty easy going time getting my N3DS to sysNAND 9.2 with 10.7 emuNAND (I happen to be using CakesFW).
Some helpful advice though...
My "downgrade" failed at least 100 times before it went through. Then, when it finally started, it crashed midway, and I had a "partial" downgrade (which is bad).
Took me another 30 or so tries to get the downgrade going again, but then it finished up nice, and everything went well after that.
I followed this guide here for all 4 the 3DS I did (3 old 3DS, 1 new 3DS). He seems to keep it updated with the latest and greatest:
How did you recover from the partial downgrade? Used the recovery menu to update it to the latest firmware? Or you were able to boot and use the same entry point and try downgrading again?
Also, which sysUpdater did you use? There so many different opinions which one to use for the N3DS.
I think of trying to set up AuReiNAND CTF, following this guy: (seems reliable, right?)
he also have a good guide on downgrading:
but he uses the old sysUpdater(as the guide itself is kinda old), so I will go with a newer version. Question is, which one?
Reading through your experience in the last few pages, it sounds like a nightmare... Do you have any idea/guess why it failed so much for you?
I'm really hoping that with a brand new, unused console (ie vanilia/stock sysnand) it will go smooth as intended, but hearing all the horror stories makes me think it really is running on pure luck.
I used whatever was in the guide I linked, he seems to indicate that there are separate versions depending on what you're running, for example my N3DS came on 9.6.
Well when I was freaking out about the downgrade process I popped over to the 3ds dev irc chat and some folks there let me know that everything was ok and to just keep going.
Seems like it was a combination of the N3DS and some of the exploits just not being entirely stable, so literally sat there like.
Hold down on dpad, power on, try to run SysUpdater, black screen, hold power until shut off, hold down on dpad, power on... etc, etc.
To recover from the partial (which isnt that uncommon it turns out), was to just re-install menuhax through browserhax on the "partial" 9.2, and just keep trying to launch sysUpdater again the normal way. Even this crashed a lot saying "Couldn't find cia file info!" or something, which apparently is also common.
I couldn't speak to the 2.1 process as I didn't dare on a N3DS.
And, to be clear, the frustrating stuff in the previous pages was from other and poorly written guides, haha. I find the one by Plailect is very easy to follow, and even warns you when things might take many tries.
Yah, sometimes it is literally luck, but I think if you're just going for a downgrade and sysNAND + emuNAND you should be ok, even if it might take a billion tries.
I tried to go further and use the official System Transfer to move from one emuNAND to another emuNAND and THAT was a disaster, lol. I was able to mostly recover, but lost all my damn Mii Plaza hats. But with homerelay and the play_coin thing I should be able to get back through in no time.
YOU CAN DO IT! GOOD LUCK As I tried to do before, I'll keep an eye on this thread and help when/where I can!
Somehow your post made me a lot more comfortable.
If shipping info is correct, keep an eye on the thread this coming monday, I will try to get to it as soon as the console arrives.
Looking at your liveblog post again, I noticed, that you tried to run sysUpdater and downgrade directly from browserhax, which from my understanding isn't recommended at all. So the guide you have followed back then should have been a pretty crap one. Should have you installed homemenuhax first, it could have saved you lots of time trying to run browserhax.
(making note to myself - install menuhax first)
What are your cold boot rates on the N3DS? As I have never owned a Nintendo console, can the N3DS stay in sleep/suspend mode for long periods of time? There were times that I have left my Vita for days and it was no problem both for the system and the battery to sleep for that long. Asking this in regards to the boot rate, if it's possible to boot to EmuNAND and just leave the console in sleep mode?
