Stories: The Path of Destinies is an action-RPG set in a vibrant fairytale universe filled with floating islands, majestic airships, and colorful magic. Reynardo, ex-pirate and unintentional hero, suddenly becomes the last line of the defense against the mad Emperor and his countless ravens. Can he come up with a plan that won’t blow up in his face, for a change?
In Stories, each choice you make takes Reynardo into a unique narrative. From tongue-in-cheek takes on heroic adventures to dark, Lovecraftian scenes, Stories’ repertoire is as diverse as it is action-packed. But Reynardo’s fateful decisions won’t always come easy: Sometimes retrieving a weapon lost at the beginning of time means sacrificing the life of an old friend. But with so many choices to make, so many potential dire destinies, wouldn't it be great to be able to come back in time, learn from your mistakes and find the one true path?
Key Features:
Unique choice-based narrative in which players explore many different storylines to find the path to victory
Fluid and fast-paced combat blending acrobatic swordplay, grab attacks, special abilities, and more
Charming hand-drawn illustrations and a colorful storybook aesthetic
A deep skill tree where players can unlock powerful new abilities such as the Hookshot or even Time Mastery
An arsenal of magic-infused swords that can be crafted and upgraded
An original soundtrack that changes dynamically with every choice
It's really fun so far, but Unity is one of the very worst engines I've ever seen. Just... just utterly bad from code to compile. Performance is dogshit in the game as during combat the framerate plummets whenever an enemy attacks
~edit~
Holy shit, it's not even Unity. It's UE4 and *that* explains why the performance drops like a stone in combat, the particles! UE4 likes throwing eleventy gabillion particle effects around and playing with this on "High" goes from 60 to 40s whenever an enemy attacks, spraying particles everywhere. Dropping to "Medium" cripples visuals (and let's face it, they're not even close to being high quality in the first place) to an aliased indistinct mess but it does seem to stop the FPS drops.
Aye, but it's the GOG one so there's no tricky protection stuff in the background. It's the particles on "High" causing it for me, but oh well.
~edit~
Sadly it seems like the game is primarily built for multiple runs, half the areas are locked off to you until you've finished the game and started afresh with a New Game Plus, keeping your existing gear. Slowly but surely, over multiple plays, you'll have gained the right gear to open new areas. That and the constant herding in one direction and being unable to go back and explore different paths you might have seen is rubbing me the wrong way Not to mention the story and narration is so haphazard, it really is all over the place and makes almost no sense a lot of the time
~edit~
Oh~ho, I get why the story is so disjointed and haphazard right now. Clever.
