The formation lap alone made me cringe, never seen it done so slow. Think they should drop it, at that rate you're not warming the tires or brakes anyway.
Circuit is pretty boring: too wide, no challenging corners (Too short corners for some great out braking action), way too long straights and with that low speeds doesn't really make it exciting.
I love drivers that are in it, quite a lot of familiars from F1. The fan vote for driver boost however is silly.
Pit stops are broken, you can easily exploit the system so I'd imagine that will be changed. It is funny to see them swap cars tho.
Think I'll only be watching this when I'm bored or in highlights, they need to make changes for me to actually enjoy it. GP2 is a lot more interesting than this.
T'was interesting because there was a battle for the championship between Piquet Jr. and Buemi and to some lesser extent di Grassi. So a 3 man battle for the last race is always nice.
My take on the formula: Not too shabby for a first year. Seen worse things when other formula's got started. I did end up with mostly watching when I was bored or just the highlights. GP2 was more fun to follow, lots of overtaking there.
There are quite some things they need to improve tho.
I loved having them use cities as venues, but... the problem with those are that you have less over taking. The tracks are not wide enough and the curves are too short. Typical street race problems.
Coverage: Pre-show, interviews,... all leave a taste of amateurism. That being said, they are being judged by someone who is used of F1 coverage so maybe I'm a bit unfair.
Race calendar: Too much time in between the races. 70% of the time I noticed there was a race after it happened. If there is more than 2/3 weeks in between I will just forget about it (and I've seen a lot of other people doing that ).
Qualifying: Well this is a rather daft setup. Too random and not that exciting. Most formula's do it better. They really need to work on it.
On the cars: they are implementing a lot of changes for next year so no reason for me to bring those issues up. Everyone developing their own engines and some more freedom will probably be enough to make them faster and have some difference in performance.
I see potential for this formula only if they change the tracks drastically and work on that calendar and qualifying session. Those are the biggest problems. The drivers list is for me its strongest asset.
That being said... they don't really have the best champion atm... an ex-F1 driver that was a key figure in one of the bigger scandals of the sports
MEH!
I was excited for today since they would race in Mexico at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez... to find out it's a neutered version of the track. PFFF! Give some proper race tracks already.
All of them just have long running curves or narrow slow ass chicanes that do nothing for overtaking.
Guess I'll have to wait another year or two until they feel confident to run on real tracks.
isnt the problem that the track has to be fixed @ a certant distance and they need huge pit cause they need to change the car mid-race? with that situation (the car changing stuff) they cant use a "real" racing track
For the pit: not really. Usually they have street circuits which are less roomy. Tracks that host F1 have no problems with their pitboxes. They usually are big (they hold more personnel) and have boxes spare due to other race series having more cars/teams.
Most likely the GP versions of the track are too long for the current technology. The track design itself is rather bad, not made for overtaking. Something you expect at street circuits, puzzling that they made it like that on a real track.
Ah well, next week F1 starts again. So then I can see if I'll be whining about Mercedes not having any competition again.
