If you like something special instead of something mainstream like WoW, give EVE-online a try.

meh, its not too fancy if youre a hardcore MMO player
once you have 2-3 60s in epics theres not much left to do
i had to stop playing due to lack of time and i don't miss it one bit now (never been the case with any MMO i played a lot ) |
Depends on your perspective of the games, tbh. If you have a ton of time on your hands (5+ hours a day + weekends), go ahead and go hardcore.
I play 2-3 hours a day on average, and I can't say I've yet gotten tired of WoW.
As for "mainstream", the guy's obviously trying to break into the MMORPG world. As in, put him in a hardcore game and he'll get bored and leave because he isn't having fun or progressing a bit.
I say, try WoW dude. It's very fun, you advance very quickly, and there is tons of content compared to your standard single-player game.
And if you do choose WoW, Start a character on the Lightning's Blade server and /w Eldariil, I'll invite you into my guild.

Wow I agree I tried every mmorpg since UO and none was as fun... well none was fun at all since they are all exactly identical. I wasn't aware of that one darkfall but I just read the website and this thing look great! It have all the best features of UO and none of these crappy mmorpg these day. I'm anger to see this

People say WoW is the kiddies MMORPG whereas Everquest2 is for the more mature hardcore MMORPG player. I havent played it much to be able to agree or disagree with that but I can see how that could be. Ive almost done the trial island and hope to move into the actual game tonite so I cant say much about EQ2 but what I have played is impressive. Im not too keen on the GUI in EQ2 but thats an almost obsolete criticism compared to the positive aspects of the game. |
WoW really is the kiddies MMORPG, but in terms of "MMORPG life", its definitely a good game to start diving into the world of MMOs with. It's hardly ever frustrating and pretty easy & entertaining if you don't play too much.

i do agree with you. It's definitely, as i said above, a good if not the best MMORPG to start MMOing with.

The local ebgames store here sells gamecards for Everquest 2, no need for a cc, or am i wrong? Have you played UO headshot, does it compare to that, i'm looking for classic rpg style mmorpg, not games like GW or WoW. Reviews of Everquest 2 seem promising. |
As far as I know payment options are credit card or the gamecards you mention but I believe they are only available in America
Im guessing UO is Ultima Online and nope not played that one so I cant comment with a comparison.

Can you give us a run down of what you have seen so far? I find MMO's pretty hard to get into at the begining, and if it doesnt grab me right away I get bored.. WOW let me jump right into a quest, it was easy, pretty fun and I saw some growth right from the start.. that is what makes WOW a good MMO.. same goes for COH (Eve, although great didnt give me that will to get better, which I feel is key to an MMO).. Does EQ2 allow a user to jump right into the game, and seek good rewards? Now, I wouldnt mind trying out a hardercore MMO, something where I know in 20 levels time I will be pretty original from other characters of my class, but I don't want something where I have to wait 20 levels just to get a new ability, they should come fast and be pain free..
*downloads trial island.... trial*
This is from the EQ2 website, an interesting read and really points out what kind of gamer I am and that they have put lots of thought into how they built the game, I have a feeling I may be quitting WOW for this one ..
Quote: | Types Of Players
Before there was EverQuest II, there were MUDs, or multiplayer text-based adventure games on the Internet. The designers of these games soon realized that players usually fit into certain psychological profiles. Players were boiled down to four types that most players could comfortably occupy: SOCIALIZER, EXPLORER, HUNTER, and ACHIEVER.
Many of today's game designers still use these player types (or archetypes) as key criteria in designing graphically rich MMORPGs like EverQuest II. Of course, there are elements of all four psychological types in each player. It's all a question of degree.
ACHIEVERS regard attaining higher play-levels and acquiring more wealth and skills the most important part of game-play. The other three types play a part in this character's modus operandi. For example, exploration skills are needed when seeking treasure, socialization skills are needed when seeking information on game advancement, and killing skills are needed to remove all obstacles standing in the way of your success.
EXPLORERS value the accumulation of knowledge more than anything. Achiever skills enable them to reach higher game levels where there's even more knowledge to be acquired. Socialization allows them to acquire more knowledge from other players. Killing skills may be fun in the short term, but can create obstacles in the acquisition of knowledge.
HUNTERS enjoy the thrill of the hunt more than anything else. Social skills allow you to acquire a band of allies to help you. Exploring new territory allows you to set traps. Leveling is valuable because it gives you more power to do more damage to your foes
SOCIALIZERS value getting to know other players and forming an interactive community. Leveling allows you to meet more players. Exploration gains you more knowledge, enabling you to engage in deeper discussions with others. Killing is something you almost never do, unless exacting revenge for a friend.
These psychological types are represented in EverQuest II's four adventuring archetypes. FIGHTERS are HUNTERS; SCOUTS are ACHIEVERS; PRIESTS are SOCIALIZERS; and MAGES are EXPLORERS. |

that's what im saying, i guess the other MMOs are just too "slow" and frustrating when you start off and don't really help you at all getting into the game
i remember the first days of UO where the newbies would run into the woods to chop wood and sell it for gold to get some gear but get killed, and resskilled 10x, by playerkillers on their first or second day *ahhh the fun*
Some of the ones i played the most were UO, EQ, DAoC, Shadowbane (too bad it failed badly), Lineage 2, Guild Wars, and currently have active subscriptions for WoW and Planetside (MMOFPS in this case though).
p.s., for example, to get a decent character the first time, when you don't know the tricks of the trade yet, it will almost always take you WAY longer so experienced players will probably have an advantage here... Also, for some people the fun seems to be leveling up their char, for me (and others) it's hell, and i just get it over with in about 10-14 days

Here's one that will possibly be quite good when it comes out, and that's coming from a guy who can't stand MMORPGs normally:
http://www.burningsea.com/
It's in beta right now, but they're accepting applications.
