i loved the first witchers ending, i thought both how it ended and where the story went were totally worthwhile for me.
and yeah ill say it.. life is strange... the emotional punch paid off everything that came before.
Also max payne 1 and 2.. mp3 can go suck ass, that game was shit, but max payne 1 had a great ending, max payne 2 was even better.
mass effect 1, remember me, soma, driver san francisco (holy shit, a driving game? but i guess its a reflection of how interesting and solid i thought the story in this actually WAS.. and the ending, how it all came together.. i loved it, it was fantastic), shadow warrior (another surprise for how SOLID the story actually turned out to be) and child of light.
and i know this ones going to be controversial, but ill say firewatch, purely because of Spoiler: | how it cleverly fucks with both the character and the players perceptions, yet still manages to make sense and make a point weaving isolation and assumption into the narrative. | - pretty much everyone disagrees with me, but dont care, i thought it was satisfying and well worth it.

@couleur: Yeah, glad I'm not the only one. I don't think I've ever been as fascinated by a game story in my life, ever – it's not just that the story itself was good, but I also liked the way the story was told. |
Absolutely. The little details that changed over the course of the game, the connection between the characters etc. It may have been a mediocre shooter, but it was a great game.

In addition to all those that have been mentioned already (they all get a +1 from me ) I'll say BG2: Throne of Bhaal, Max Payne 1/2, MGS3, Portal 2, KotOR. |
I have not played MGS3 but all of the others are very worth mentioning. Especially BG2:ToB. The ascension at the end of Portal 2 was very well done.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Don't forget the Bioshock Infinite DLC. I loved it how it tied into the story of Bioshock 1.

I though Kaltern wanted to know recent games with good ending, but it seems there are none if most of the comments here include older games.
Haven't played any recent game but from the older ones Spec Ops: The Line wasn't mentioned yet. Decent cover shooter with amazing story. You can say the ending was good, if you didn't already figured it out what was going on.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance had a great ending (plus nearly all games in the series had great story, the way everything was connected and explained - damn that was good). I remember having goosebumps during the "I am not your enemy" scene with Raziel and Kain.

I really like the game for the story, too bad the gameplay was mediocre though.

Yes, all the Bioshock games are vastly inferior to the System Shocks in terms of gameplay.
Bioshock 1 has the best premise of any game I've ever played, really. But the story broke down and stopped making much sense around half-way through, and the ending was terrible.
Bioshock Infinite, however, was absolutely fantastic in terms of story from start to finish.
I really liked the plot and story of the first Shock - but I feel the second Shock was a bit silly in some ways - even if the presentation was fantastic for its time.

Having played system shock 2 before bioshock makes any sort of twist in bioshock 1 predictable as a soap opera clifhanger. It's basically the same thing in a different setting.
with watered down gameplay
Spoiler: | Yeah, I get triggered by bioshock, the biggest disappointment after Hl2 for me. Textbook example of failing to realize what made the previous game good |

Do you understand what I mean by premise?
I'm not talking about the twist. The twist is where the game starts to break down in terms of story, for me.
To me, the premise was the whole concept of building an underwater utopia - and having the Ayn Rand philosophy as the driving passion behind it.
I thought it was such a compelling idea - and I was utterly immersed during the initial stages of the game.

Yeah, I get that I just used you as a quote as you triggered me with the word bioshock.
I'd burn that series to the ground if I could

Portal 2 came immediately to mind. That bossfight... I recently replayed it, still vividly remembered the bossfight, but even the second time around it blew me away.

What word?
Bioshock?
BIOSHOCK?
B I O S H O C K?
Even if you hate the game that much, it was still more or less responsible for introducing the Shock series to the masses.
That alone makes it worthwhile.
Then again, I don't go around feeling entitled to having my concept of Shock fulfilled by the hard work of others. |
Oh they can keep making as many call of duty shock's as they want if it brings the dough.
From a subjective perspective of artistic idealism though, it's a travesty to both the series roots and gaming in general. It's like drawing houses on the pavement with chalk after painting the mona lisa.
In the grand scheme of things it's just a first world problem, of course. I don't lose sleep over it, but I do get that smug and elitist wind in my hair when I exaggerate my criticism of it though.
They set the bar high and spoiled me, they deserve it

Well, let me say right now that if you gave me a team and 100 million dollars - I could make a Shock way beyond any of them, including the first two
But as long as I'm not really doing any work - and all I have to do is choose between buying or not buying the hard work of others, I don't feel too sad about it.
That said, to be honest, I was quite pissed about the first Bioshock - especially in terms of the dumbed down shooter gameplay and the silly simplistic moralism.
Then I realised that it's just a game - and they also had to justify the investment from the publisher.
You don't do that by going too sophisticated, as you risk ending up with a smaller audience.

Dunno if this actually fits here since it's more of a personal opinion but i'm a huge longest journey fan and i really like the ending to the first longest journey it was a fantastic and magical game for me back then and the ending fits it perfectly, i even kinda liked the ending to Dreamfall despite the huge cliffhanger.
Still waiting for the last Chapters episode so i can play it whole.
