Hey guys,

I'm thinking about a small start-up and i'd like some opinions from you humpers world-wide.

This is how it started - I really like bikes, i'd like to own more than one, but our apartment is relatively small and I don't have room to store them all, heck I don't have room for this one either, ended up storing it on the balcony, under a protective cover, but i'm very careful about my belongings and it doesn't do it for me.

So i've been thinking about starting something like a hotel for bicycles, because i know there's more people in my situation.

- Rent or buy a shipping container ( yes those massive metal boxes ) and carefully restore it.
- arrange storage options inside
- place the container somewhere in the city, maybe close to parks, where possible.
- manage renting costs, even service the bike after a prolonged period of storage.
- logistics? customers should be able to order the bike via a dedicate app? needs extra trustful employee to deliver or bring the car to container.
- safety? container has to have somekind of alarm system, maybe use a card based locking system, or qr code, or something?

I'm sure there are bikers around and I want to know some opinions, would you leave your bike to something like this? If so, how would you like it to be stored? Hanged from the ceiling, static on it's tires? Let me know!

Uhm, so instead of parking your bike at a public spot with bike lock (or your home), you park them inside a container instead (where only owners get access to)?

Some cons:
- Personally i wouldn't want to go to some place in the city first to get my bike.
- If you decide to deliver the bikes back to their customers each time, you have to pay employee(s).
- You would need to invest much money first for all the needed stuff.

IMO it doesn't sound like a good business idea and i doubt you will make any profit for the first few years.

I think you would really need to gain peoples trust before you start such a venture, also consider, most people finish and start work around the same time, so I would assume everyone would want their bikes delivered about the same time as each other.

How would you link a bike to a customer? What would you do if the customer lost or said they lost that ticket/code or whatever you used to link them with their bike and stop them walking (or riding) off on someone else's bike?

I'm not saying it's a bad idea but I really think you would need to gain peoples trust first.

I think a public bike rental service might be a better thing, like the Vélo's we have in Antwerp & Brusssels. So the target public isn't limited to people who already own a bike.

Yeah, I don't think you can have a container put somewhere just like that. I generally think you should think of a simpler business plan.

Probably true, how about buying cheap plots of land and used shipping containers, hiring them out to people who want somewhere to put a bike? Smile

@Bob, I get what you mean, but I'm solely thinking about such activity for those who lack the space to store their bike ( be it apartment, home, etc ), mostly over the cold season.

@Reg, trust, yes, that's the biggest enemy. Linking bike to customer isn't such of a pain, each bike has it's own code, branded on the bottom bracket. But I''m also considering even more safety.

@Waldo, can you share some more info?

@Padrino, yes, also considering joining a renting service, maybe use customer bikes for that? Cool Face

Thanks for the brainstorm guys, really appreciate it, please post more if you have ideas
