I drove VW DSG - pretty much had to use it at M all the time as it kept rpms at around 1200-1800 all the fucking time and on S would shift at too high rpms
and when you press the kickdown - it took about 1,5sec for it to shift 2-3 gears down and start accelerating
not to mention that same engine with DSG sometimes has up to 1/4 less torque as the trans can't take it Laughing

auto is for grandpas Very Happy

Sorry Paul, I love driving long distances and most of europe has shitty speed limits like 120 or so. I get cramps if I have to hold my foot at the stupid angle for hours Laughing

But that has nothing to do with an automatic gearbox Sad

You know where I've been on my last holidays and what distances those were and I didn't hold my foot at an angle for ages; my 2004 car already had this cruise control magic on a manual gearbox, which is indeed fantastic for long bits at constant speed. Doesn't require an auto though Wink

BMW's Sport Automatic is just the name for their up/down stick, right? Fuck that, flappy paddles are still more fun than that, although nothing beats a proper manual Very Happy

StrEagle wrote:

Difference is that VW's DSG at least still has flappy paddles (albeit tiny ones) in addition to the stick, I don't think BMW does. The up/down stick just feels shit to me. It doesn't allow you to keep your hands on the wheel like paddles do, but at the same time it is nowhere near as involved as a manual either because it is just a tap against the stick :/

It's the worst of both worlds Very Happy

And yes, full automatics are the worst. Anyone who likes those clearly doesn't really like driving. Kickdown lag is the most annoying thing in cars ever.

Sport automatic means it has the flappy pedals Razz And the software side is aimed at higher performance with an S setting and as far as I could see it's a dual clutch so you are always in the next gear and have super short shift times, but I could be wrong about that Razz Oh and it has Launch Control because of 4 with sport automatic Smile

I hate BMW's sports seats, they suck ass. I drove a 2008 M for a while, your back is breaking after an hour of driving. I don't have much reference though, it was the second car I drove with sports seats.

Automatic transmission FTW!

yes dual-clutch is very fast in straight acceleration - drag racing
always has pepared the next gear that it suspects you will need say 4-th
but if you downshift to 2-nd, it has to disengage 4-th, then prepare 2-nd, then engage the clutch and then actually switches gears

waiting for 3 clutch gearbox Laughing

When was BMW supposed to ditch manual transmission? At the end of this or next year?

M5 and M6 was automatic transmission only since a long time now (3-4 years) i think, or maybe not only but the biggest amount of them was build with automatic transmission. think they planned to ditch it for the m series completely. dunno about the other series, but it wont be long till they ditch manual transmission completely.

why? cause the technology is now so much advanced that acceleration with automatic shifting is faster than manual transmission and even fuel saving compared to manual driving.

everybody who says automatic transmission is gay and bad for "driving" hasnt driven an automatic car in the last ~5 years (heck even ~15 year old high quality cars with automatic transmission are more comfortable to drive than some shitty new cars today, though the transmission might not be as fast as the todays one)

ZF from BMW is one of the most awesome automatic ever done, pure pleasure to drive it.

@Eagle, the only dual clutch tranny from BMW is the one equipped on M models.

I just looked it up, the ZF 8-speed actually uses a torque converter?! in 2016? on sports cars? Laughing
I read that planetary gears engage/disengage by pneumatic pressure - even more loss
and coupled with the loss from the RWD driveshaft..

depending on the driving conditions - say bye to 5-25% of your engine torque that doesn't reach your tyres

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_converter#Efficiency_and_torque_multiplication

and looking at this video - if the tran brakes outside warranty, you might as well throw the car away Laughing
although I haven't heard of any ZF failures, but then again I don't follow BMW forums

If I should face any problems with the car, I'll just drive it to the next dealer or call them in to retrieve it and they'll give me an equivalent car.

On the delivery day of our colleagues 320D the stupid driver opened the door next to a short stone and scratched it badly. The driver returned with the car the very first day and he got a 330D as replacement for the time being Laughing I could live with that Razz

@Pumpy, don't worry, you'll have proper services after acquisition.

Eagle, speaking of M2, this just happened 10 mins ago. What a fantastic car in person, didn't expect it to be wide as fuck. Now i want a drive Crying or Very sad

Once you go automatic, you never go back.

nope, my last car was auto and the next will be manual for sure. Something about manually changing gears just makes me happy Laughing it does suck in heavy traffic though, but I can live with that.

Curiously though, I think on a motorcycle a DCT (auto) is the better option, although it's very easy to change gears I think riding without that worry (especially in the city) is more enjoyable. I'm considering a honda nc750x with DCT after a short test-ride...

Automatic is better in everyway currently (and very reliable also, if you change the gearbox oil in decent intervals), and don't think it has anything to do with being manly or whatever, but I simply prefer manual. For a small citycar auto is perfect, anything else I'd rather change gears myself, especially with modern cars that have hill-hold assist and light clutch pedals, it's so easy and enjoyable... nothing like rev-matching when downshifting (punta-tacco Very Happy).

BTW very nice ride Pumpy Very Happy I am happy you won't wait for the punto to fall apart, so you'll just have the good memories from Fiat Laughing
