Punctuation has less got to do with the native toungue, and more to do with general grammatical principles. So, his criticism isn't really aimed at your english ability, but your skill att forming proper sentences and punctuating them properly.
Not that I agree with him, but I don't think his flame was aimed at your english. At least, it shouldn't have been.
