Gaming is a waste of time, MMOs are the natural evolution of that.
Hell, while we're at it, movies, the internet etc are also a waste of time, they'll keep you entertained, but how much value do you get from them?

Essentially. All I play is WoW now.. it's a relapse. I've been MM'ing since Asheron's Call/Everquest.

Imo, yeah MMO's are a waste of time.
Sure they can be enjoyable, but the ever present problem with persistent characters, is that, they're not persistent. Sooner or later, the game gets old, outdated or the servers shut down ect ect.
And having to recreate a character (using completely different rules & skills each time), having to do that soul-crushing grinding over and over again, for weeks on end, just is so far from worth it.
Ontop of that, theres the lag & lack of local servers (for me) issue, ontop of hackers & explioters ect ect. Also the combat systems in most mmo's put me to sleep most of the time.
So I'm sticking to Oblivion, where content can be added without undermining my efforts, where extra features can be added without causing me to change my character or buy some extra package and while it's not exactly a twitch fps, the combat is far more viscreal than an auto attack. And best of all, you don't pay 15$ a month for one of the best looking games to date.

You need to define 'waste'. Vacations can be added to the list, if you aren't careful in your definition. In fact, anything you do that doesn't directly relate to survival is a waste.
Or... Anything you do that doesn't relate to the evolution and eventual supremecy of man.
Or... Anything you do that doesn't relate to maxxing out every single pleasure center in your brain.
Or... Nah, the last one is good enough. I'll stick with that.

No, but you see, thats the beauty of these polls, you can define what people's definition of waste really is. It is as much about mmo's as it is about waste.
Or are you just an introvert who could never see the value of this?

The main point of life, in my opinion, is to enjoy it.
Seems some people define waste as doing anything that doesn't earn you money, well what use is money if you don't enjoy it?
Of course, there are different kinds of enjoyment, and personally I think that certain transitory pleasures are a waste if indulged in all the time, but every pleasure has it's value. Just that some are more meaningful then others. I find intellectual pleasure is far more valuable then carnal pleasure, just because it lasts longer.
For example, some of the greatest pleasures in life you have to work hard to achieve, but they are worth it. For example, getting married to the woman you love, getting the job you always dreamed of, not worrying about financial matters, having children and being able to support them fully, being secure and comfortable, being proud of your work/children, having fantastic friends, being satisfied with your life etc.
There are loads. But the point is you can't achieve any of this by sitting in your room jacking off and eating cake (transitory pleasures). Of course, these have their place, and computers are part of that, but it can be considered a waste if they stop you from achieving any of the higher pleasures.

Well, I personally find the majority of current MMO games to be a waste of time and money and the reason for this is because; sure some people might find enjoyment but the setup of the game doesn't for the most part (and certainly not in any grand scale) reward the more time and money you invest.
The only game that has in my personal experience is World War II Online and this is primarly because it is a different kind of approach to most others on the market and succeeds in drawing you in on many levels. It's also cheap.
Of course I would say MMO games are still in their infancy like the whole industry in fact.

I was going to make a lengthy post of my own but this guy summed it up as I would have. I respect and agree with his statement. I used to play MMOs which desired frequent timeplay. Anarchy Online, then Lineage 2. But hopped out of them when I began doing a bit worse in college. It was a choice, pleasure myself mentally now? Or later? I chose to focus on my work, accomplish what I need to survive within everyday life and then acquire that mental pleasure! lol. For games I now focus upon online games that are not as demanding to ones time. Guild Wars, and Battlefield 2 are currents. The best thing about those are I am able to pick them up at any time and play on my own time while still acquiring a state of mental pleasure and feeling that I accomplished something each playtime length. I was going to try out RF Online, but it is going to be too time demanding like Lineage 2 for instance..the korean grind styled game.

There are more than one stupid cases where people kill themself or get problems with the police thanks to MMOs. Addicted freaks, yes.
I've played many MMOs myself, but now that I'm clean (lol), I'm happy. Such games take shit loads of time. It's just a WASTE of time and money. Not worth it.

Also MMOs are normally or frequently filled with no lifer jerks who are some of the most rude people ever. This is due to them having rarely any restrictions since it's all online. The bad normally outweighs the good it's sad.

if you believe news reports 50% of the people you meet work in those chinese MMORPG farms...
As for people's behaviour, it can be due to a number of things. I meet plenty of people in real life who are assholes, online doesn't have the lionshares of that (Lets go with some extremely rude, and not always drunk people at hockey games, or the little pieces of crap who decided to get it on with their GFs during Syriana in the row behind me..yeah..thats a hot movie)
If you actually think there are more rude people online because they're uninhibited you need to get out a bit more. People are assholes no matter where they are. You can just easily get exposed to many people very quickly there in a more personal manner than you could on the street.

Disregarding the fact that the original three of the major mmo triad are still running?

The best thing after gameplay in games is the story and since MMO's don't have one Single player games will always be better and a 'less' waste of time.

Thats not true at all, of course there are more people who act like assholes online, i'm one of em! I love pissing off the noobs in warcraft 3.
In real life people are wary of being a blatent asshole because they can never be sure of the ramifications (getting fired, getting battered, getting shouted at etc.). When someone is online they can do/say what they like and know the worst consequence is that they'll get banned from a server.
Don't be so naive.

exactly, i scammed so many ragnarok online players for their gold, treated the noobs like a bastard and made em run into high level dungeons, only to loot em after they ve been killed by the very first monster.
but thats only my mmo self, in reality i treat people with more respect because thats the way i want to be treated as well, you reap what you sow.

How is basing an opinion on what you've experienced naive? I've met many people in real life who are assholes. They are not wary of the ramifications of being dicks.
They are selfish pricks who only think of themselves. If you want to talk per capita, in online games (not just MMORPGs) I've met more people who are assholes than real life, however there is hardly a day that goes buy that I don't come across a prick or an asshole in real life. Its usually several.
I define an asshole as someone who doesn't take into consideration those people around them. Like the group of 7 or 8 people who used to gather near the study cubes at college during lunch everyday and create a very loud ruckus. Or the two or three people who stretch themselves across a high traffic hallway at class change and refuse to move when hordes of people try to get through. The drunks on the transit train last night, sitting there drinking, causing problems for people and generally making the whole ride a rather unpleasant experience.
We could go with the group of wannabe gangsters who hang around the convenience store across the street everyday and block the one path through the fence causing you to walk around the parking lot to get in (or walk through the acrid smoke and alcohol smell).
I could spend hours going on about the selfish pricks I run into everyday.
Yes you're going to get more in online games, inhibition is lowered, but inhibition doesn't stop everyone. There is nothing naive about that.
