Yeah, sorry if this was confusing, but my 8gb card is the r9 390. Since we were talking about 8gb card and usage in games, I was mentioning my own experience. Didn't mean to confuse the discussion.
kanint has an AMD card. he reports higher vram usage than nv cards at same settings. that's where we are getting AMD from. where are you getting this system ram used? why would system ram be listed under VRAM usage monitoring it would simply show up as higher RAM usage.
also, i've had more than 3.5gb VRAM used in batman arkham knight, the last game I played on win7.
post some links where we can read more about this stuff. could be another great reason to bash the win7 dinosaurs
MEM in msi afterburner means vram
RAM is system memory, watch dogs in that video consumes more than 7 gb which is indicating a memory leak, in my case it never went above 4.5gb of VRAM
besides i always measure vram in gpuz as well
cant find decent win 7 comparision, but here is win 8.1
isn't nightmare settings require 5gb to even be activated, in that case it's probably doesn't do anything
why defend the cripple, 3.5gb is and will always be 3.5gb, i have no desire or time to install w7 and run all these tests
dunno why we even discussing the past when new is already here and it is better, except the price, then again it never is
anyway waiting patiently for 480 8gb, hope amd will deliver
Well yes I believe it's been known that the 480 is placed around 980 (NV) / 390 (AMD) performance (The leaks seems to certainly showcase this thus far if they are reliable.) but at a significantly lower cost than either of those GPU's were when they launched, they're aiming for a mid-section market dominance or some such due to this strategy and the GPU won't compete with the 980 Ti (NV) / Fury (AMD) although the improvements to the GPU architecture has other benefits such as power consumption and unlike the Fury it's not limited to 4 GB VRAM although being for 1920x1080 res or around there (And VR of similar res.) 4 GB might not be too much of a limitation anyway for the 480 4 GB model which is a bit lower priced than the 8 GB model although rumors point at it also being slightly slower clocked anyways in newer games the hardware will be a bit of a issue if you attempt 2560x1440 or "4K" although it can be done at lower settings of course.
(I don't believe AMD has a "high-end" 490 type GPU at all and perhaps they won't unless they call the Vega 11 for 490X or some such, I believe the Vega 11 was the slower of the two with the other being Vega 10 followed by some other Vega whatever in 2017 and then Nova for late 2017 to early 2018 or what it was?)
(Nvidia likely has plans for something for 2017 as well, I don't remember exactly what the newest available roadmaps for their GPU releases looked like but there's plans for something.)
EDIT: There's also rumors of a lower-end Nvidia 1060 for competition with the AMD Polaris with more recent GPU architecture from Nvidia although depending on availability of the 1070 and 1080 retailers might also lower earlier GPU models like the 980 and possibly even the Ti (maybe.) making those possible choices as well although I don't expect the 980 Ti to drop by much and I don't know if Nvidia has a planned price slash for that GPU model themselves.
(The 480 4 and 8 GB will be like what, between 250 - 300 Euro depending on if it's stock or custom models I guess - but it could be lower. - so yeah the 980 might be a bit close if they drop prices on that but the Ti is probably going to stay fairly expensive even if the 1070 and 1080 become more available as well I don't really know what the issue with that actually is, yields or possibly just very popular? both?)
EDIT: Technically I don't believe the Fury is 4 GB limited as such just that AMD didn't want to stick more stacks of HBM(v1) on the GPU die thus it's only 4x 1 GB stacks instead of say 6x or 8x which might have worked depending on cooling and the other components needed in the GPU itself for HBM memory.
(Not sure if HBM actually gets all that hot but currently there's two stacks on each side of the GPU so there would certainly have been room for three or four stacks instead if heat isn't too much of a concern plus yeah that other thing, costs.)
As for HBM v1 I believe the limit for one stack was 4x 256 MB so 1 GB in total whereas for v2 which is coming whenever - possibly Vega and whatever Nvidia does with Pascal next. - anyway I believe it can be configured so each stack has a max of 4x 1 GB instead thus 4 GB per stack so at 4 modules it would yield 16 GB VRAM and clocks might be a bit higher too although HBM is already fairly fast though even with the limited overclocking of HBM1 on the Fury there were some gains so there's room for improvements still, well faster is always better too I suppose ha ha.
(Although both AMD and Nvidia could also opt for GDDR5X modules for VRAM, not sure how big of a impact that has compared to HBM or even GDDR5 which I believe the 1080 uses GDDRX5 and 1070 uses GDDR5 but both are still very fast so "X" doesn't seem to make a huge difference at least between those two.)
(But what do I know, GDDR5X probably costs more although HBM 1/2 is likely more expensive still but yeah faster = better but costs and profits and all that.)
(I really need to start reading up a bit more about these things, computer tech is advancing very fast both with software and hardware and it's a pretty broad subject too with all sorts of components and yada-yada so yeah I'm a bit out of it to say the least.)
bad new for whom exactly and who the fuck is sapphire ed?

He said it would be more of a sidegrade than an upgrade.
480 is a replacement for 390 with less heat and lower tdp, it is still an upgrade even if you coming from 970 3.5gb to 480 4gb
i never liked saphire anyway, msi is where it's at
The 480 seems perfect for me, I'm still sporting an r7 265 And though I have a good deal more $$ now than a few years ago I'm in the habit of preferring value over performance.
what's the point on spending so much money and still unable to max out a 1 yo game
get gtx 980 for twice less, drop couple of options and get stable 60 fps logic
but of course
disabling and lowering options like vegetation, pubeworx and aa can give you 60 fps easily without significant visual difference, still ridiculous that after a year new cards unable to provide 60fps at 4k
1080ti?

You do realise that 4K is much more demanding then what many are thinking? GTX 1080 is definitely not fast enough to run all the latest AAA games on 4K with everything maxed and it is very likely that no card will do so in some time.
You can joke about "700€ card cant even run 4K" but please remember that some years ago full HD was a dream wasn't it even on that 700€ card. At 4K we are just not there yet in many things.

it's a solid 1080p card, it was just advertised as 4k card and it is certainly overpriced, considering that 16nm is cheaper to develop
i'm just amazed how some people would defend nV for this like they created god like performance and it's a bang for a buck, must be all the hype
and as the description itself says -> 4k needs fourtimes more power than full hd ~2 million pixels vs ~8 million
Exactly....8 million pixels + all the bells and whistles in terms of graphic effects and such. Sure some of them are more useless than the others but max settings are max settings.
