ok, i bought a toshiba dvd burner in august and it worked great. about 3 weeks ago a freind was over and i was burning some music and movies for him, and thats when it went to hell. i did 2 burns before that earlier in the day and it worked great, but when i started burning stuff for my freind the drive was acting as if it was in pio mode (slow burns, high cpu usuage, set it at 8x but was only going at 3.4-6). so, after finishing the burn i uninstalled the secondary ide and rebooted, and same problems - note that it reads and wrights cd-r's just fine, also it would leave very weird lines on the dvd's after burning almost as if it would do a hard burn then soft, back and forth.

i decided that the drive was fucked up. so, i bought i new sony dvd burner 2 days ago, and installed it. the first read went great 16x all the way, same for the first burn 8x. today i went to burn some .iso's that were lying on the hd and the damn thing is acting just like the toshiba did, slow ass burns/lots of cpu usuage/1 or 2 weird lines on the written dvd.. now whats worse is that its acting the same way towards cd-s.. i checked to see if it was in dma mode or pio and it is in ultra dma. so i thought "what the hell, maybe its in pio mode" deleted the secondary ide chan and did a reboot.. nothing.

i am ripping hair out right now, cant find anything about this - its either the drive's are fucked up (not likely, 2 different sources) or my computer is fucking with them. this is the kindof shit that really agrivates me.

so i ask, can anybody give me help with this? if you need my system specs i can post if needed.

hm, try the regcleaner from Nero, maybe that helps. I have posted the link here:

Have you installed a new cable with the Sony writer? Check your hd's for errors as well.

will try the regcleaner, ive been using the same cable (and that might be the problem) hd's seem to be working fine.. i think ive got it narrowed down to either 1. lack of ram (currently at 256) 2. the ide cable itself.
thanx for the reply.

edit: umkay, ran the regcleaner and it said i had errors and that it had fixed them, rebooted, burned a dvd with nero and it worked great. tried buring an image with dvddecrypter and it does the slow burn again..

Had a similar problem (not quite the same though) recently but this was more stupidity on my part. I was trying to get an SF game to work and was playing around with the secondary IDE to avoid having to pull power cables. So I decided to uninstall (instead of disable) the channel. Not only did it not work but when XP rebooted it found new hardware and tried to install drivers and failed. I got a big fat yellow exclamation under my secondary IDE in device manager. Sad
I didn't even try burning a disc because I knew I had messed up big time. So I did a system restore from a point before I had the stupidity attack. All good now. Might work for you if you have win98 or xp (don't know about the rest).
PS: If you have by any chance have an SF game installed then this problem might be related to that. Hey you could even have a shot at winning the prize.

Do a reformat of the windows disc and your problems should be solved. As you are describing it a regfix temporariliy fixes it but then it goes all bad again.
Reformat and reinstall and it might work.

What other hardware do you have in the machine? CPU, mbm, hdd's and so on...
256mb RAM might be a little low but should atleast be able to handle a 8x burn without problems.

I think im going to do the reformat, seeing as 2 drives couldnt fuck up like that (not likely). But, im gonna get ahold of a freind and test out the drives in his computer first before i do anything, if they work, then its the computer and a format will be done.

here is what ive got in other hardware:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (T-Bred)
MB: Biostar M7VIG Pro
HD: Western Digital 120gb (master)
Maxtor 160gb (slave)
ROM: Toshiba SD-R5372
Sony DRU-810A
Ive also got a USB 2.0 card and a Firewire card.

I think that people jump on the format option too quickly instead of trying to solve the problem at hand. Personally I have formatted a disc only once and that was a fresh install. It takes so long to get the computer exactly the way I want it and then to go and format because of one problem?
If you had recently formatted then it is not such a big deal but I still think that there are other options to try (for eg: restore to a few days/weeks back, reinstalling the burning software, reinstalling ATAPI drivers for your controller) before you can give up.
BTW, I assume you are not mixing your hard drives and optical drives on the same channel.
Good luck with the format. Smile

well, i uninstalled both versions of nero that i had running - cleared out all reg keys too. also learned that nero temp files fragment the harddrive like crazy and that it could be the problem for slow burns (did alot of searching, found some people having the same exact problems) so i did a defrag and it did a good read full 16x, im still unsure tho, dont have anymore blanks. so, im gonna get some blanks, also try the drives in a freinds computer just to make sure.
