Basically HL2 was updated with the HL2:Ep2 engine and assets for the PS360 releases.
Years later when they ported the game to Mac, Valve did the same with the PC version, only not as good (bugs, broken lighting, etc).
Then years later when they ported the game to Linux, Valve fixed a bunch of those bugs, but it's still not perfect.
There are plenty of bugs and visual anomalies and this mod 1) fixes all those and 2) updates the first released in 2004 game to properly take full advantage of the 2007+ engine, going further than Valve did for the console remaster. So don't expect 2015 graphics, but expect an HL2 that was made in 2007+ rather than 2004.
In other words a significant enough update.
See for yourselves:
Basically, this should be the version of HL2 everyone plays from now and on. edit: releases tomorrow.

"Update" is great and fixes everything. I finished it this way and it was a flawless experience

it's subtle but kinda fixes the game look to be more like we remember it.
ep2 engine update in 2007 have broken original hl2 in some small ways

It's not meant to be "impressive" but it has the same look the original game did but better.
You can't say that about CM. At best you can say it is looking different (and better) and at worst distracting (and worse). Very inconsistent.

So if I want to use it with VR I do need to own the two episodes? What if I want to play just the main game?

The vr mod uses assets from the two espisodes, hence you have to own them aswell

More like hl1 and fear enemies are much more interactive, they create the illusion of good AI.
They "talk" to each other, and move fast and frequently.
Thats about it.
Yes, hl2 enemies just stand around, and less talk.

I just noticed that Half Life 2 has no protection on it?? I finished building a retro PC quad core 8GB ram and a GT 1030. I copied my legit steam version of HL2 and put it on a usb stick and copied it over to the new build. I was going to crack it and thought I would just double click the game.exe too see. It fired right up with no problem. Thanks Gabe!!
They have script checks or some such. I remember back when it first came out, there was a well known instance where you are on an elevator as part of a story sequence and on the pirated version the AI would just stop at that point, so you couldn't continue. Maybe they have stripped all that out by this point, but don't be surprised if there are issues.
