I've got the game thanks, the graphics didn't really impress me apart from that bit near the beginning where you're in Athens and you see Ares decimating the army. I never completed it because I just got bored after that bit where you kill the giant minotaur.
The graphics are smooth, whereas RE4's are a bit jaggy, but apart from that I consider RE's to be superior in every sense. I didn't play it in progressive scan mind, but I doubt it improves things that much. Thats not to say it's graphics are bad, they're good considering it's on the PS2.
Actually, compare reviews of God of War and RE4, you'll notice that some of them score RE4 higher in the graphics department. So your statement about there being "no competition" is pure bull.

If you looked at any of god of wars enemies in the same detail as that pic I think you'll find they look just as shit. Of course, it'll be extremely difficult to find a pic of that nature because no-one has a reason to make comparisons like the ones between the two different versions of RE4.
Technically superior in what sense? Because it has some pretty lights when you use the blades of chaos? Please, that proves nothing, RE4 is technically superior in some regards to GOW too.
This is like people arguing about the graphics between Farcry and FEAR. It'll never be resolved because both games have superiority in different areas. Lets just accept that both games have excellent graphics, and your statment about GOW 'crushing' everything on the PS2 is blatently false.

Technically superior in the sense that it has ALOT more going on on the screen then RE4.
There are things happening almost all the time in god of war. Explosions happening, rain falling down, sand dust flying around, water falls splashing down, a great view distance, awesome special effects when you battle all the enemies etc etc, and all this in a beautiful world . It's basicly full of life.
Things like this is just not in RE4 (I'm talking about the majority of the game, not the few exceptions). RE4 has a nice shell, I agree on that, but it lacks everything else.
Ign have their best awards up now. And their graphic award went to gow.
RE4 is not even a runner up, and I must say that I totally agree with them.

It's not about winning so I dont know?
I find it interesting to hear other peoples opinions and why they think like they do.
People need to loosen up and understand that there is a thing called 'having a discussion'.
But it seems to be "forbidden" to have discussions on forums these days. :/

IGN are retarded as hell anyway, they gave GOW 98%, and it's not that good. They always overrate games.
I guess we could quote reviews all day which corroborate our points but that'll get us absolutely nowhere. This is more a matter of opinion then technicality, yet you really overstated GOW's graphics, I mean "full of life"? My arse has more life in it. Try playing Gothic again, thats full of life.
If it wasn't a PS2 game no-body would give a shit about GOW's graphics. It'd be just 'good' on the Xbox. I'm not saying RE4's graphics are better technically, but I prefer them easily over GOW's. There is no way in hell that GOW shits on RE4, which is what you've been implying. I know you won't settle for saying they're even.
This discussion is over, so make another post if you feel the need to have the last word, but i'm not going to bother replying, you're a fanboi through and through so this is pointless.

re4 has definitely better graphics than gow, i could never really understand what was so great about gow graphics.
imo the ps2 titles with best graphics would be mgs3, re4, shadow of the colossus and soul calibur 3.
gow had nice lighting effects here and there, but the character models were crap, even kratos looked like a cheap low-poly model.
resident evil 4 has alot better textures, god of war looks too colourful and void of detail in comparison, imo dmc3 had better graphics.

I think it's safe to say that we judge graphical archivements differently.
I look at the overall look and the small details, and not just things like textures and how many polys a model has. Pulling off everything gow does at 60-perfectly-smooth-frames is a damn impressive archivement in my opinion.
Shadow of the colossus looks really sweet, but seriously, it can not even hold a steady 30fps. I'm sure that gow could look TONS better if framerates wasn't part of the overall visual experience. And it could also problary look ALOT better if they used loading points (they have just a few).
And all this has to be taken into count when you judge the graphical archivement. And gow is superior if you do that. And in my opinion, the only game that can stand up to it and even exceed it in some aspects is Jak 3.
And I never said that gow is visually more pleasing (what's visually pleasing is up to each person to decide), I just commented on the guy that said that RE4 pisses on everthing on the console and that RE4 is a good benchmark. And I answered that technically it's not and that gow is better for that.

I must say Resident Evil 4 was one of the few recent games that actually gave me the "wow" factor. I'm not an RE fanboy but have played all the other games and in my honest opinion I think RE4 is a cut-above its predecessors.
Sometimes change its whats needed to freshen-up a series - to give it a new spark of life if you will and I think RE4 has done this perfectly.
I think far more people are looking forward to the next installment of the series now, after playing RE4 then they were after playing RE3.

nah, running around an area full of dead bodies would either lag extremely, or the models would need to be reduced to a pile of shit.

WOW, that one had me shitting my pants every time, even after you knew it was coming, it still freaked you out.

indeed, totally agree, the 1st game in any long running sequal is always the best. RE4 is nowhere near and totally off track to the orginal game and no longer any fun

I think Resident Evil 4 fun is more fun to play then any Prior Resident Evil
If you played completely through the game you would agree.
No one has a right to judge Resident Evil 4 until the actually BEAT THE ENTIRE GAME.

pallebrun wrote: | I agree that this is a truly awesome game, but not as a RE game but as a game on it's own. This game have erased basicly everything that RE was all about, and that sucks big time from a RE perspective.
The scariness is completley erased. The scary mood is non existent. The action have gone from limited to action, action and some more action. At times this game feels like a shooter!
I like the improvements they have made BUT they could have made these improvements AND kept the core gameplay of the older RE games.
In my opinion, all the other RE games are better than this, with RE2 being the best of them all.
I mean, the reason why I play RE games is because I like walking around in silent big areas with a sweet ass mood, searching for items and keys and shooting 1 or 2 enemies, and never know what will happen, that's why I played all the other RE games.
Why do every game have to be turned into a "shooter"?
Soon those that want some classic gameplay in games will have to stop playing because there's nothing left. :/
This is not the first game to be turned into something different.
Jak comes to mind. The first game was the best platformer ever created in my opinion, and also one of the best games ever created, and what do they do with the sequals? They turn them into some action/driving/shooter games with limited platforming! They took what was limited in Jak1 and made them key elements in the sequals, and almost completley erased all that made the first game so good.
Ratchet & clank is another game that went from platformer with a few guns to complete shooters. These games are still great games (except the last ratchet game which sucks big time), but they could have been godlike if they had kept the core of the gameplay. It's like everything has to be about SHOOTING THINGS these days. :/
I blame the new generation of gamers for this, they only want action, action and some more action.
Remember, I'm not "flaming" RE4 as a game, it's awesome as a game, but it's really pathethic as a RE game. They shuld just have named it something else.
Hopefully RE5 goes back to it's roots WITH the new improvements and the things that were good in the older games. |
I agree with what you said.....I played for like 2 hours...Just could'nt get into it...Give me Resident Evil 1 + 0 for the Gamecube...

i m so glad they changed it to what it is today,
not only was that version laggy as hell, it was also a pretty obvious silent hill/fatal frame
ripoff.
the re4 as we know it today is a very unique game in comparison, great job.
