Depends on the games. Some have restrictions set like: X amount of time played and such. It's not that common though.

That being said: codex version gave me lots of problems, GoG one didn't so I stuck with that one. But if you want that beta patch and online play you could switch.
Since I couldn't give a single shit about the game before release, I recently started watching pre-release videos about theories and "TOP 5 THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO" clickbaity crap, and holy shit, 75% of every single thing these people were looking forward to turned out to be complete bullshit.
Right now I'm looking at a guy being all giddy and excited about PvP "confirmed" to be in the game.
I'm sad now My fingers itches to buy ED, but reading that 10 year plan is like i'm buying early access game.
The game has great game mechanics, the procedural generation execution of the content kills it. Wait 2 more years, with 3 expansion on board it might be great to play. Tho, there is a risk things won't turn out great considering how stubborn Braben in his team are when it comes to listen to the community's demands. But if the last feature of the first Season Pass (expansion) is the alien race, they might be going on the right path.
