I've just finished Golem City. So far I like the game, but I still can't help but feel somewhat dissapointed by it. I love the level and gameplay design - it's a big step up from the previous game and it's pretty much a stellar example of how a sequel should be done in this regard. I like the new augments, I like the improved combat - I think it might the first time in a Deus Ex game when I think the combat might just be fun enough to warrant a second, lethal playthrough. I also like area design in the visual sense, like that rock on chains or giant pills coming into a door that looks like someone's face - a lot of stuff like this and it's really great. The writing is also mostly solid (with the exception of some dialogues) and there's a lot of details and cool stuff to find.
But, sadly, that's where my praises of the game have to be cut short. I think my biggest problem with it is that I don't really consider racism a core cyberpunk theme, so putting so much epmhasis on it, for me, feels like the game is going away from its roots. What's even worse, the game feels suprisingly one-sided with all this, and quite shallow. Since the story also isn't a personal one this time around it all feels somewhat disjointed and uniteresting. All in all, I suppose it just doesn't feel as cyberpunkish. To be honest what it most reminded me of when I first entered Prague was Half Life 2, of all things. And since cyberpunk is one of the main draws for Deus Ex for me... well, you get the picture. Personally I found the atmosphere of the previous game much, much richier and closer to the roots. It also dealt with more unique issues, whereas here whole topic of augmentation is summed up into one group of humans being discriminated and repressed by the general society - and it really is much, much more complicated than that, which HR already hinted at.
Wow. I know we almost completely agree in taste in other games, but I just wrote my impressions of this game, Aquma, and it could have been word for word your post
Just finished it, understand peoples gripes about the story but still enjoyed every second of it. GOTY for sure.
the last video ties it all together somewhat nicely(the one after the credits) as in explaining the relevance. Think we will be in for a more grander story in three for sure.
edit: those credits omg, made my gpu go crazu 100% usage @ 84c... ive never seen it above 73 at 100% : /
How far into the story am I if I'm about to meet Rucker?
Depends. If you have explored everything before, then around 4 not too long side quests (but one very fun, and one personal) left and about 5 hours of story. Less, if you go fast.
According to Steam, I've been playing for 49 hours (with probably around 6 hours of idling and messing around). I'm on my way to meet Rucker. What can I say? The maps are so well made, I like to explore every nook and cranny.
Arrived at Prague for the third time now. I guess ending is coming near.
Going mostly guns blazing now, instead of stealth mode like i did till now.
It's fun too.
So the AI is fucking retarded and often gets stuck at some door- or gateways for some reason.
In System Rift you will re-unite with Frank Pritchard, Adam's friend and former colleague at Sarif Industries, and assist him in hunting down information on the mysterious Santeau Group," the publisher explains in a press release.
"Desperate to get more information, Pritchard targets one of the most secure data banks ever created--the Palisade Blade. In agreeing to help, Adam may also be able to uncover hints as to who the illuminati really are."
System Rift will be available on September 23 through Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and on PC. It will cost £9.59 on Xbox One and £9.49 on PS4 and PC. The DLC is included as part of the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Season Pass, so those that own it will not need to pay extra.
The second story DLC included in the pass is called "A Criminal Past" and will be available in early 2017. You can see the full list of all the content you get as part of the pass here.
System Rift will be shown during PAX this weekend.
Finished it at around 40 hours, rushing towards the end. Overall, it's quite solid but I agree the main missions are too few in number and something like Golem city was simply pointlessly big and exhaustingly repetitive as an explorer. Prague is fantastic, but it's the wrong kind of atmosphere for a Deus Ex game, considering more than half the game takes place in it. I did enjoy the story and I felt the anti-aug issues are both relevant and compelling. The ending did come too soon, but I was prepared for it, so it wasn't a big problem.
I like the experimental augs, but overall the game became too easy with things like cloak and tesla. Tesla doesn't break Ghost, by the way.
It's a worthy Deus Ex, but should have been structured differently with less Prague and at least two more big and unique missions.
