Should be about 2/3 of crotch height (yes it's not precision, it's the general estimate).
For a race bike it be: length of your inner legs (ground to groyne) x0,65/0.66

Some manufacturers have their own tables specific to their different bike models/frames to help you pick, or they would want you to get "fitted" by a specialist (read: some guy at their shop).
Anyhow, google says 61 is the largest frame, so if it's still too small, then he cannot into cycling
On a more serious note, at 196cm he is pretty tall, and that is definitely near the max rider height many racing bikes are designed for. If it turns out to be a bad fit, he might have to pick a different bike.
EDIT: Also just finished a 75KM ride. Been a while since I tried longish distances and my legs are killing me. Time to laze on the couch and get fat again!
Can't even be bothered to wash all that sand off of myself.

Well he's not going on the pro circuit or train as much as some veterans/amateurs so I think he'll be okay with the general calculations (before anyone uses mine: those are for race bikes not regular ones).
Google is wrong on the max frame size though. Although bigger ones are less common/standard.
Forgot Phill was tall, if he is +190cm it would mean he most likely has a frame that is too small (which I kind of thought when I saw the pic, but didn't mention it since he bought it at a store). Probably needs one that starts from 63cm.
Then again one can always chose to not give as much about it, us Belgians can get a bit too far into our cycling xD

Ah me bad.
Yeah I wouldn't recommend it at all. You could get away with it if its only used for short trips, but still better have a proper size from the get go. I usually get told off when I start to talk about proper size and such, a lot of people rather be happy with what they bought than hear it doesn't really suit them.

Bit surprised how many are going for a race bike, I'd rather take a good touring bike to do some bigger distances/cardio. Much more comfortable.

This. I switched to Jones Loop HBar on my mountain bike, and oh man, so comfy. Might try that on my road and cyclocross bikes too. Maybe even put a Jones on my fixed gear.
Also, saddle is important, I recommend the Selle Anatomica X Series if you want leather, otherwise Selle SMP Hell. The comfiest saddles I have owned.
Might get a Jones bike later this year. I'm really digging his philosophy, especially after seeing how much the Loop Bar improved my mountain biking life.

Top tube length is much more important than seat tube. Stand over is negotiable, and not that much of an issue, I mean, even as a kid we used to ride bikes way bigger for us. Sure balls were busted, but still.
Top tube length is what matters I find, that has to be right to get a proper comfy fit.

Hey Ako, what do you use for cleaning and greasing your chain? Mine already caught some dirt on it, want to remove it and clean it properly, then re-grease.
Thanks!

I use WD40 to degrease. It's also good for cleaning up the frame, just make sure it doesn't get on the brakes. Then wipe / brush clean and regrease with whatever you fancy. I just go with lithium grease because relatively cheaper than motorcycle chain lube.

Early morning adventure by bike to test out the Schwalbe Big One tyres on some gravel and fire roads.
Meant for beach racing and road use, really fast tyre, but poor puncture protection. Had to run higher pressures due to fears of puncture, so I'll probably put it in storage and put on some 2.35 Ikons. Good tyre for touring though. Held up well on offroad stuff, but the higher pressure on my rigid bike kinda hurt. Could run lower but I don't trust the roads around here.
Also, got a cheapo fat bike from a Giant sub brand meant for the Chinese market, because why not. Climbs pretty good actually. Tires are heavy, but you only notice that when starting from a stop. Once they get rolling, they do not want to stop even on climbs.
Really fast on the road, as this is being marketed as a town / beach cruiser, but also quite good for XC. Others don't like the cupholder up front, but I like it. Less mud on my water bottle.
Next bike will definitely be a Jones Plus with 29+ rear, and maybe a fattie up front.

Quite daring you are with those Big Ones, on such terrain. What bike is the trail one, gimme side pic - i'm looking for an MTB as well, just to cover some trails, but i don't have any more room to store it
Not sure about the fatty, don't really understand their purpose.

These are just some crappy trails alas. Fun to ride at times, but for the most part, nothing like those you can find in other countries.
