I wonder when we are gonna start seeing SSD's as part of reccomended specs in games. I think I still had a cd burner in my PC last time I used an HDD in games.

All of the game's files are encrypted with EFS. Certain spots on the game world trigger scripts that load assets for the next area. Since the files are encrypted on the file system level, pages cannot be cached in the Windows page cache. This causes insane HDD activity.
Looking at the task manager, I can clearly see that the stuttering happens during 100% HDD activity spikes. In the city, HDD activity can stay at 100% for several seconds, causing the framerate to dip to 40.
The only real solutions I can see is to disable encryption on regular assets. This would allow Windows to cache the corresponding pages and the game would perform as expected. It would require you to redownload most of the game though.
Apparently the game engine itself is not to blame, it's the way it was packaged as an UWP app. This wouldn't have happened on Steam. |
But does ssd helps with this problem at all? Currently have the game preloaded on HDD, i have no idea how to migrate a windows 10 store game to SSD.. is it worth it for this game? Or the problem still persists?

GTX 970 here, I've not been getting any stutters whatsoever on either of my two rigs. (Other rig has a HD7950 in it)
Both systems have it installed on my HDD, however my AMD rig loads the game much slower.
I've noticed that the tropical areas with lots of trees cause frame dips (moar shadows = moar gpu usage i guess) However otherwise I'm running it at 60fps on ultra with MSAA disabled as it's usually a huge performance hog.

Did you try the city yet? That section rapes my harddrive and drops to 40 fps.

60 fps on ultra with a 970 ? What resolution you at ? 640x480?
Game consumes 5-6 GB vram on Ultra so I'm gonna doubt that.

Benchmarks are useless right now. The game is gimped by an UWP problem, streaming data causes insane performance drops.

He quite probably has a monster cpu because what he says is impossible without it. This game is mostly cpu bound after a certain level of gpu power (which 970 has).

Does this thing decrypt files on the fly? If so, maybe that's part of the reason why it smashes the CPU and HDD

Definitely hard to understand. It's not only those two cards, only the 470 has proper performance. The rest are super low, lower than they should be. I think the 470 should be around the 290x in term of performance. The 290x, 380x and 470 are meant to hover around each others with the 470 possibly being a bit lower.
The 470 itself seems to be doing GREAT. It's slower than the 970 in DX11, but beating it here (DX12 I imagine, as most recent MS games).
AMD did release new drivers 5 days ago (I think). Since they didn't test the 480, I imagine maybe they're running into issues around benchmarking AMD cards. I'm not sure.

Nah they don't have a 480, was brought up before with other benchmarks done by them.

I've got the i7 5820k overclocked to 4.3GHZ on liquid with 20gb DDR4 (don't ask why 20..)
I've also got an OC of 150mhz on the 970.

took a leap and bought it on psngames, for 28 euros.
They indeed sent me a new account, containing the game.
I logged with the new account while I was connected to mine, started download the game, and while it downloaded (no rush, its 54GB lol) I logged out and removed the "extra" login.
Now I have the game in the main account roster, but of course is still not playable, until midnite, when I'll know if it works.
Unfortunately the PC side is not working: the same account on Windows 10 Anniversary is not showing the game as downloadable in the win store...

If I'm buying xbox account with the game, can I play the game on PC? Not sure how exactly this "xbox play anywhere" thing works as I don't have an xbox.
