Well, it's working pretty well, basically. I upped voltage to 1.250 and multiplier to 44, any more gives me bsod. My shitty evo 212 can't handle any more voltage (getting 80 celsius at max during prime 95 26.6 run of about 15 minutes. Problem i have is speedstep. Everyone says it's awesome and you won't notice the cpu being clocked up and down as it's so fast. Yes, i fucking notice. Playing WoW and suddenly i get these freezes and when i can check again the cpu is about 1000mhz or below and it gets stable again when it gets higher, and this keeps reoccuring.

So, speedstep on or off? and/or is there something that can be done to make speedstep more reliable?

Not to create a new topic I'll post here.

Tried to overclock my CPU again today and it seems that I cannot get my i5-4670K to be stable over 4.0 GHz which is a bummer I guess.

However wanted to ask another thing. After few overclocking attempts the tmpin3 in HWMonitor and CPU temp in the asus monitoring thingy stopped showing temperature correctly, it always shows 36C regardless of the temp on the cores.

 Spoiler:

Any idea why? Did something melt? Smile

You need to adjust the vcore a bit higher than that to overclock higher. Everything is safe up to 1.25V it seems after reasearch. . My 4690k runs at 4.4k at 1.25V a friend only managed his on 4670k at 4.4 on 1.30V

Edit: i must have written thiis while being drunk Laughing

As for the temp not showing seems to be a weird bug as it happens after BIOS changes, a full pc power off fixes it.

@Stormwolf As for the OC - I need to gen a better fan for my CPU cooler. @ 1.2V I get a max temp of 90 C after 2h in Prime95 Sad

Any recommendation for a good 120mm fan? And should I get 2 for better performance (one in and one out)?

I had one in one out on the evo hyper 212 and it made no difference clocked or not to the temps.

try not to get over anal about temps, look at what is acceptable for your cpu at idle and under game loads and work with that. Room temps make a difference of 5deg c for the most part btw. If you are getting 30c idle or 35c idle to 60c under load you are doing fine. I get 50/51c on load for most games with high game settings.

CPU paste also plays a big part depending on what type you are using, don't get anal about that either, the majority of pastes work fine, all that changes are idle and max load temp variations with them. As in some pastes do better idle temps and others when under load. Swings and roundabouts really, choose ones poison as they say.

Yeah, two fans on the evo 212 is nearly pointless since the air pushed into the heatsink can't move faster than the exit fan can move it out. You will get some static pressure between the fans but that's basically it. I prefer to put the fan to push air through the sink and then out through case fans. I believe pushing air is more effective than sucking air (with the same fan, same sink, same setup).

Running at 4.1 Ghz here without voltage adjustments (Five years or so now so stable. Very Happy ) but anyways in Windows I simply set the default CPU state for lowest to 100% instead of 10% and it won't fluctuate.

It's about the same as a GPU otherwise where it will run at lower speeds and voltage at low load and as usage increases so will clock speeds but I'm not too fussed about power draw and well temps will never be a issue with a Noctua DH14 on it (Weighs a bit tho. Razz ) but you can disable it via bios as well though I found it enough to just set this in Windows via the power settings in the control panel. Smile
(I use the high setting by default and then I tweak it to remove sleep mode, hybrid whatever it was called and other things I don't need for a system that is built to be on almost 24/7)

Is there a way to set minimum CPU state to 100% automatically when running a game, and set to default 5% when in desktop? Sounds like a pretty easy thing to implement in application like RivaTuner which already detects most games very reliably.

Don't use Prime 95 to indicate how your temps will look.
Doubt you use anything in real world software that will thrash your cpu that much to generate those kind of tempratures.

Is there even a reason to fuck with the voltage if shit is stable and temps are fine? I OC's my Sandy and it doesn't even break a sweat with the H115i and it's stable/not acting up under full load over hours.

It's not just about temps with prime though. Also stability. But I guess that is what you were getting at. Ignore this if that's the case.

Prime95 is not even best way to test out stability (Haswell and upwards), Aida64 is much better and doesnt melt your CPU.

Haven't used Prime95 in ages. I never ever came anywhere close with anything I do or did or will do on any PC I own or owned or will own.

I just let run the self-test thingy from ASUS and it works just fine.

Of course, I don't do hardcore overclocking anymore , so ...

However @OP, I had a 4670k and it went to 4500 stable no problem , using the ASUS ai suite.

(with a h80i).

4.2GHz @1.25V crashed after a couple of minutes. @ 1.30V the temperature skyrockets to almost 100C even after changing the thermal paste Sad at least now 4.0 @ 1.20 does not go over 80C in P95

I can post my 4.6ghz settings for the same cpu if you want. i don't even know why you are overheating your haswell with outdated apps, they won't guarantee gaming stability. Just play games, you will expose bad oc's faster than with stress apps.

Ok, I hope it goes well.

Starting you off conservative, so go lower if its stable in several games over a few days. if you get 0124 bsod's up vcore.

46 max boost on all 4 cores
uncore ratio at 41
vcore 1.24v
vrin 1.8v
vring 1.150v

been on 1.22-1.23v for a few years myself now, max temps 66c, but averages below 60 even in most demanding games for hours in the summer, on air cooling. and yet in prime or intel burn, it will overheat within seconds.

mafia 3 with near 100% cpu usage all the time doesn't come anywhere near 70 c, let alone 90+ as do bench apps.

fucking piece of shit Smile tried so many setups now but still getting crashes while gaming.

4.3 @ 1.27 not even going over 60C in Mafia 3... and bam! blue screen

fucking silicon lottery...

Gonna try to get something around 4.2 and voltage closer to 1.3V
